Newburyport, MA is a stunning town year-round, but why not plan a visit for this fall? Skip the summer tourist crowds and experience the best the town has to offer! From seafood to history to stunning ocean views, you’ll find yourself already making plans to return year after year.

Seafood on the Waterfront

There is nothing quite like eating seafood where you can see the ocean it came from. Sea Level Oyster Bar is a waterfront restaurant that boasts amazing views, the freshest seafood, and gourmet pizza.

Quality seafood doesn’t have to be stuffy or hoity-toity. Sea Level is both innovative and sustainable, serving delicious seafood dishes in a casual dining atmosphere. Check out the daily specials or order classic lobster rolls, cheeseburgers, baked scallops, and more. There’s also the raw bar, where you can get oysters, shrimp, littleneck clams, lobster, or a combination of the four.

Learn Local History

Newburyport, like most Massachusetts towns, was settled back in the 1600s, so it has some great history that any visitor should explore. You’ll find traces of the past in the many old buildings you’ll pass downtown, or you can learn from the experts by visiting one of the town’s great museums.

Museum of Old Newbury

There’s no better place to go for local history than the Museum of Old Newbury. Set in the historic Cushing House that was built in 1808 this museum preserves the history of “Old Newbury,” which includes Newbury, Newburyport, and West Newbury, from its early settlement to today. The museum includes period rooms and gallery spaces that display the ups and downs of the area’s past.

Private tours for up to 8 people are available with advance notice from October through May, so be sure to call ahead to book your time. You’ll walk through two floors of an 1808 brick Federal-style home and hear stories of Old Newbury.

Custom House Maritime Museum

From High Street to the shores of the Merrimack, Newburyport is steeped in maritime history that stretches from the seventeenth century to today. Step inside Custom House Maritime Museum to see galleries and collections of maritime objects, art, models, and historical documents. Check out permanent exhibits and specialty annual exhibits that go in-depth about the important people, places, and artifacts in Newburyport’s maritime history.

Walk Along the Waterfront

Fall days in Newburyport are simply stunning, so when the sun is shining, be sure to take a stroll down to Newburyport’s Waterfront Park. Walk along the boardwalk that runs along the Merrimack River and watch boats sail and seabirds soar. Enjoy the beautiful fall leaves on the trees contrasting against the bright blue sky. You can enjoy the crisp sea air and take beautiful photos of the waterfront that will make you the envy of your Instagram-loving friends.
