Don Gorvett’s Black Bear Fine Art Gallery is featuring the artist’s paintings from his summers of 1968 to the early1990s. Although Mr. Gorvett is well known for his large multi-colored woodcuts prints and drawings the public is generally unaware that prior to his intensive and productive printmaking years the artist spent numerous years experimenting with painting outdoors on location. These paintings in the exhibition have seldom been seen and are largely views of Gloucester, MA and Ogunquit, ME. They are in the medium of oil on canvas a very in style. The opening will be held upstairs at BBFA Gallery overlooking Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, Friday 5-7:30 pm on October 9th. The show is on view now until October 15th.
“Interestingly enough, these paintings reveal familiar ideas of design, line and color on canvas that is recognized in the artist’s woodcuts. These pre-woodcut oil paintings are experimental and dynamic providing a strong foreshadowing of things to come.” said Vivienne Gale, BBFA Gallery Director.
Don’s artistic efforts, of the last three decades, are primarily expressed through the woodcut and drawings of the Maritime architectural landscape and harbor activities that shape our coastal towns. His work can be found in the collections of the Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, Andover, MA., Cape Ann Museum, Gloucester, MA., Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockport, ME., MFA, Boston, Ma., Ogunquit Museum of American Art, Ogunquit, ME., Peabody Essex Museum, Salem MA., Portland Art Museum, Portland ME., and others.
