Charles A. Lowe, “Charlie,” was the first staff photographer at the Gloucester Daily Times, a position he held for nearly 25 years. Former Times reporter and city editor John Christie, who covered many assignments with Lowe, will discuss how Lowe professionalized the Times photography, moving away from static shots to coverage of breaking news and candid shots documenting the life of his beloved city. Through his Nikon, Lowe captured the faces of Gloucester: faces lined from years of hard work, frustrated at City Hall, joyful at a football game, relaxed at a mug up.
Lowe’s influence can be seen in the GDT staff photographers covered in the current special exhibition, Above the Fold: The Photographers of the “Gloucester Daily Times,” 1973-2005, which Christie supported as a volunteer researcher.
