A hero of the Hammond B-3 organ, Dr. Lonnie Smith has been treading the fine line between pulsing soul jazz and greasy funk for nearly half a century. This year, after a 45 year hiatus, he returned to the iconic Blue Note label with an acclaimed recording entitled Evolution featuring sax great Joe Lovano. It’s clear the highly charismatic organist has lost none of his funky mystical swagger.
