Glenn Crytzer and the Savoy Seven bring their “vintage American jazz” to Rockport for their Shalin Liu Performance Center debut! Their superlative musicianship and unbridled swing is fueled by each musician’s genuine love for playing pre-war jazz, bringing to life the music of this bygone age with stunning authenticity.
The Savoy Seven is a small combo offshoot of the Glenn Crytzer Orchestra, the winners of the Hot House Magazine Award for Best Jazz Group in New York in 2017. The GCO’s repertoire includes the music of the great big bands including those of Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, and Duke Ellington while the Savoy Seven focuses on the small band repertoire from the same time period including the smaler groups also led by the name big band leaders as well as the music of artists like Fats Waller, John Kirby, and Sidney Bechet. The band also continues to expand the repertoire by performing bandleader Glenn Crytzer’s original ‘vintage-style’ compositions and arrangements.
The Savoy Seven released two EPs in 2015 “Focus Pocus” and “A Little Love This Christmas” and their first full length album “Uptown Jump” was released in 2016.
While completing his formal training in classical composition and cello at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Florida State University, Glenn took up dancing the Lindy Hop as a hobby. Through the Lindy his love of early jazz grew, but he lamented that there were so few musical groups that specialized authentic performance of his favorite kind of music. Glenn decided to put his musical training to use, taught himself guitar, banjo, and jazz arranging, and set about bringing to life the music he loved. Glenn has since become a staple in New York City’s jazz scene as a guitarist and bandleader. He has released 8 albums with his big band and combos and dozens of his recordings have been featured in films and TV shows seeking to evoke the sound of the golden age of radio.
