Newburyport Art Association presents Flowers for the Hills: Celebrating the Hills Gallery at 20!, a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Hills Gallery.
Our Hills Gallery is 20 years old this year! After converting an old coal weigh station, the Newburyport Art Association opened the doors to the Laura Coombs Hills Gallery, named after one of our most prominent and successful founding members. Born in Newburyport in 1859, Hills made her career as an artist, rising to national prominence and regularly returning to Newburyport for summers. While she worked in several media, she was most known for her floral pastels and miniature paintings.
To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of our Hills Gallery, we are hosting the first of a two-part show in the Hills and our NAA artists were asked to contribute their artwork featuring flowers. The resulting exhibition is an explosion of color that makes one feel like they are strolling through a greenhouse. This exhibit features a diverse collection of art from over 70 artists, all approaching flowers from a unique perspective. Please join us again this winter for a follow-up exhibition, continuing the celebration of Laura Coombs Hills and her legacy, which will focus on her passion for miniature painting.
Flowers for the Hills: Celebrating the Hills Gallery at 20! is on view through July 24th in our first-floor Hills Gallery. Please join us on Saturday, July 16th, 2022 from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm for an opening reception for this exhibit in the galleries. The show will be on view concurrently with the NAA’s Photography Interest Group’s annual exhibition, Through My Lens. All work is for sale. The gallery is free and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00am–5:00pm, Sunday 1:00pm–5:00pm and is handicap accessible.
