QWERTY Festival

Celebrate the typewriter at the Museum of Printing’s QWERTY FESTIVAL on Saturday, August 11th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is FREE and open to the public.


On display will be one of the FIRST typewriters ever made, the 1874 Sholes and Glidden, and the SMALLEST typewriter ever made!  More than fifty unique and interesting antique typewriters will be on exhibit.


The day will include lectures and a showing of the film “California Typewriter” (schedule below).


Type on a vintage Royal typewriter. View a Linotype typesetting machine, which was invented because of the typewriter.  See rare office machines, from the first Mimeograph to the Gestetner, Ditto, and more.


The Museum Gift Shop will be selling vintage typewriters, typewriter t-shirts, books and more.




11:00 a.m., renowned typewriter expert and collector, Greg Fudacz, The Antikey Chop, will give a talk on “A Quick History of the Typewriter” (45 minutes).


1:00 p.m., Museum of Printing President, Frank Romano, will explain why ‘’The Linotype Exists Because of the Typewriter” (45 minutes).


2:00 p.m. A showing of the 2016 documentary film, “California Typewriter”, featuring people who remain loyal to the typewriter as a tool and muse, and a portrait of a typewriter service and sales company.  The cast includes Tom Hanks (showing his unique collection), John Mayer, David McCullough, Richard Polt, and others.
