This lay-led workshop is designed for amateur writers, such as yourself, looking for a supportive and encouraging setting to share your writing, give and get feedback, discuss your writing issues and nurture your writing skills. The focus is on stories, in the form of a memoir, biography, short story or novel; fiction, or nonfiction. It is also focused on personal essays that capture life’s reflections, observations and lessons. Areas not included are poetry, plays or journalism. Each week, we will also discuss a writing topic such as voice, target audience, characters, hooks, show-don’t-tell, editing, story arc, and others.
The format of each session is envisioned as follows:
Show and tell; A short reading by a different volunteer each week
Writing topic discussion; voice, audience, etc.Share time: read your writing, with discussion and feedback
The sessions will be facilitated by Steve Mills, an amateur writer himself. Over the last two years, Steve has taken several adult ed writing classes and is a member of the First Page writing group. His writing projects include a memoir and a collection of short stories, both fiction and non-fiction.
