A lecture will be presented by Captain Raymond H. Bates, Jr., on Thursday, November 2, at 7:30 pm in the Carolyn Lynch Education Center at 170 Washington St, Marblehead. Bates will be speaking on his new book, Shipwrecks North of Boston Volume Two: Cape Ann.
Raymond Bates is a commercial fisherman and diver who has collected numerous artifacts through his many years of diving. Many of these artifacts are currently on display in Abbot Hall. Bates has used his extensive maritime knowledge to write two volumes of books about local shipwrecks. His newest book continues the story from Shipwrecks North of Boston, Volume One and moves us up the coast, this time focusing on Cape Ann. Over 600 shipwrecks in the waters near Magnolia and Cape Ann have been documented, dating from 1635-1977. During his talk, Bates will tell these stories by recounting the harrowing experiences of the mariners who fought for survival along the Boston’s North Shore.
After the lecture, Bates will sign copies of his new book, which will be available for purchase.
