SUMMARY:Coffee and Conversation at the Carlson Education Center
DESCRIPTION:Carlson Education Center\nCAM Green\, 13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA\nFree Program\, Registration Required \nLate 19th and early 20th centuries immigrants had limited opportunities\, especially women and girls. The Saturday Evening Girls Club was founded to bring girls together for intellectual pursuits and companionship\, and the Club developed the Paul Revere Pottery. The Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements influenced the girls’ work\, with the concepts that simple beauty should be a part of daily life and that there was little distinction between fine and applied art. Scores of girls became contributors to American life as a result. Join us for a presentation focusing on the influence of the Saturday Evening Girls Club and Paul Revere Pottery. \nYou are invited to join us Thursday for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Education Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. No special knowledge needed! Just a curiosity to learn more in a small group setting and enjoy a unique experience. \nPhoto Credit: Lili Shapiro (1894-1978)\, Goose Bowl\, made for Paul Revere Pottery\, 1910. SUMMARY:C.J. Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band
DESCRIPTION:3/6/25\nReserved Seats $30\nStanding $24\n7pm Doors / 7:30pm Show\n21+ / Positive I.D. Required \nClayton Joseph Chenier is Creole music royalty. His father\, the legendary Clifton Chenier\, invented the style of music we know today as Zydeco and was the first Creole musician to be recognized with a Grammy Award. \nC.J. joined his Father’s band on his 21st birthday. On the road his father showed him how to front a world class touring band\, teaching C.J.\, a multi-instrumentalist\, how to run the family business and how to develop his lifelong passion for music into a career. When Clifton died in 1987 his son\, C.J.\, adopted the Red Hot Louisiana Band and recorded his debut album for the great American independent label Arhoolie Records. \nAttending a C.J. Chenier show is a transformative experience. You may come in tired and beat up just from living in this world – but you will leave renewed and happy. And that is the promise C.J. makes\, “You can’t come to my show and stay unhappy. You’re going to break a smile before too long. This is happy music.”
