DESCRIPTION:Join Us Mid-Day for Artful Conversations\nTake a midday pause and experience one work of art in depth. \nArtful Conversations are informal\, docent-led gallery experiences that invite visitors to slow down\, look closely\, and engage in thoughtful conversation. Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries. \nThe program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation\, curiosity\, and conversation\, participants are encouraged to share ideas\, consider different perspectives\, and discover new connections together. \nThis week for Artful Conversations \nIn 2025\, CAM acquired two 2023 photographs by Matika Wilbur as part of the Museum’s Native Initiatives\, a project that culminated in a landmark exhibition of Wilbur’s work at the CAM Green. Wilbur’s work reshapes how Indigenous Peoples are represented across the United States\, centering contemporary Native identity and celebrating the vibrancy of Indigenous culture today. \nPlease join CAM docent Maggie Rosa for an engaging conversation as she reflects on what these photographs reveal—about the photographer\, about the individuals portrayed\, and about the evolving stories they invite us to understand more deeply. \nBorn and raised in England\, Maggie Rosa moved to the Chicago in 1968 to work as a research technician at the University of Chicago. During her eight years in Chicago\, she married Joe and obtained her PhD. The two of them did post-doctoral research at Yale and then moved to Cambridge to join the nascent biotech world. They eventually built a weekend home in Gloucester. In 2001 they “saw the light” and moved here permanently to participate in this great community. Maggie is an active volunteer in local organizations\, most recently the City Hall Restoration Commission\, Gloucester Education Foundation\, Cape Ann Museum\, and Generous Gardeners. As a Cape Ann Museum docent\, she serves as an ambassador for Gloucester by introducing visitors\, especially cruise ship visitors\, to Cape Ann’s history and culture. CAM’s Fresnel lighthouse lens is her favorite piece in the Museum because it exemplifies how science\, technology and art were combined to address an urgent need in maritime safety.

DESCRIPTION:In honor of America’s 250th and the Frederic Church 200\, The Trustees will present a series of two lectures to honor the American landscape. Each lecture will be followed by a reception with light refreshments. The series\, Celebrating the American Landscape: In Art and In Nature\, includes: \nSept. 24th – Olana: Frederic Church’s Vision of Art & Landscape presented by Sean Sawyer\, PhD\, President of The Olana Partnership. This first lecture will showcase the artistic visions of Hudson River School landscape artist Frederic Church (1826-1900). Church created Olana\, his artful 250-acre home and studio\, now a National Historic Landmark in Hudson\, New York.\nOct. 1st – Preserving Scenic Beauty in Charles Eliot’s Museum of Landscapes presented by Cindy Brockway\, Trustees Senior Managing Director of Cultural Resources. The second lecture in the series celebrates the New England landscape that surrounds us\, which remains at the heart of The Trustees’ mission as founded by Charles Eliot in 1891.

SUMMARY:Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs
DESCRIPTION:Mike Campbell was a member\, architect and co-captain of the Heartbreakers\, a band he co-founded with Tom Petty\, whom he met in a Gainesville\, Florida carport in 1972. \nWith special guest Sarah Lee Guthrie \nThe Heartbreakers lead guitarist\, Campbell co-wrote many of the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers hits and also co-produced many of their albums – in addition to penning songs for Don Henley (“Boys of Summer”)\, Bob Dylan\, Stevie Nicks and playing on records by Aretha Franklin\, Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash. \nIn 2018\, Campbell joined Fleetwood Mac’s World Tour on lead guitar and in 2020\, Campbell released Wreckless Abandon\, the first album by The Dirty Knobs\, a group that was Campbell’s longtime side project but is now his primary musical focus. They released their second LP External Combustion in 2022 and toured the USA\, including runs opening for both Chris Stapleton and The Who. In 2024\, their third album Vagabonds\, Virgins & Misfits was the subject of extensive critical acclaim from NPR’s “Fresh Air\,” Rolling Stone\, The Los Angeles Times\, Consequence\, Salon and more. Campbell’s fourth album with The Dirty Knobs\, Mission of Mercy\, features appearances from Kate Pierson of the B-52s and Morgane Stapleton. \nIn additional to Campbell\, The Dirty Knobs features fellow Heartbreaker Steve Ferrone on drums\, Chris Holt (Don Henley\, The Eagles) on guitar and Lance Morrison (Don Henley) on bass. \nMike Campbell recently released his memoir Heartbreaker\, a fast-paced\, tender-hearted rock ’n’ roll memoir for the ages and a New York Times bestseller.
