DESCRIPTION:Arnold was still on the Patriots’ side of the Revolution\, he and his troops camped in Danvers? \nOne of the most strategic and daring exploits of the patriot cause during the revolution. Part of the troops encamped in the Town of Danvers on the night of September 14\, 1775 on their way to Newburyport where they embarked for the Kennebec and their famous march through the pathless wilds of Maine successfully accomplished in spite of formidable obstacles and excessive privations. Native Americans\, specifically the Abenaki\, played a role as scouts and guides\, and there was also hope for broader support from the Canadian Indigenous populations. \nIn September 1775\, early in the American Revolutionary War\, Colonel Benedict Arnold led a force of 1\,100 Continental Army troops on an expedition from Cambridge in the Province of Massachusetts Bay to the gates of Quebec City.

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 19\, 2025\n10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nCape Ann Museum Courtyard\, Downtown Campus\n27 Pleasant St\, Gloucester\, MA\, 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nAs a seaport town jutting into the Atlantic\, Gloucester was of strategic importance during the American Revolution and always under threat of attack. The people of the town stood ready to take action against the British\, and many of them did. In this walking tour down Middle Street — one of Gloucester’s oldest streets – we will step back in time to meet people who were witness to Revolution right from this spot; see where they lived and gathered\, in houses still standing today; and hear the stories of the roles they played in defending liberty\, as patriots\, privateers\, preachers and more. This tour was developed in conjunction with the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you walk Middle Street in downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. DESCRIPTION:Newburyport’s Road to Revolution Presents: Through a Howling Wilderness: Benedict Arnold’s March to Quebec\, 1775 \n📅 Friday\, September 19\, 2025 – 7:00 p.m.📍 St. Paul’s Episcopal Church\, Newburyport\, MA \nExactly 250 years to the day after Benedict Arnold led his troops out of Newburyport\, join us for a captivating lecture by historian and author Tom Desjardin on one of the most extraordinary—yet often overlooked—episodes of the American Revolution. \nIn September 1775\, Arnold commanded eleven hundred Colonial soldiers on a daring\, top-secret mission: to march and paddle nearly 200 miles through the untamed wilderness of Maine and Quebec to seize British-held Quebec City. It was a journey marked by hypothermia\, disease\, starvation\, hurricanes\, and blizzards. Dozens perished; survivors endured eating everything from dogs to lip salve before reaching their target. Though the attack ultimately failed\, Arnold’s expedition helped pave the way for America’s eventual victory. \nIn Through a Howling Wilderness\, Desjardin tells this gripping story of endurance\, sacrifice\, and leadership before Arnold’s name became synonymous with treason. \nAbout the Speaker:Tom Desjardin holds a Ph.D. in U.S. History and is the author of multiple acclaimed books. A former archivist and historian at Gettysburg National Military Park\, he has taught at Bowdoin College\, advised film and television productions (including Gettysburg and Gods and Generals)\, and appeared on the History Channel\, A&E\, Discovery\, PBS\, and CSPAN. DESCRIPTION:On September 19\, 1775\, over 1\,100 men departed Newburyport on a secret mission to capture Quebec—led by Benedict Arnold and planned with George Washington. \nJoin Jack Santos as he recounts the stories of Newburyport’s patriots on this daring expedition through the wilderness as we celebrate its 250th anniversary. \n250 years ago this year\, on the 19th of September\, 1775\, 1100 farmers\, soldiers\, merchants\, teachers\, and laborers left Newburyport on eleven ships for a secret\, bold attack on Quebec City. \nHad the plan worked\, there likely would have been no revolutionary war\, and Quebec would have been the 14th state in a new United States of America. \nRelatively recently\, Jack Santos put his hiking boots on his feet\, and his kayak on his car\, to follow Arnold’s trail through Maine. He followed the diary\, maps\, and stories of Newburyport soldiers.
