DESCRIPTION:How\, why & where the first battle of the American Revolution could have happened at Salem’s North Bridge in February 1775 instead of in Lexington and at Concord’s North Bridge on April 19th. \nLess than two months before April 19th in 1775\, the American Revolution’s first land battle could have taken place in Marblehead and/or Salem instead of in Lexington and Concord\, in the exact same scenario. The “Salem Alarm” event that occurred in Salem on February 26th\, 1775 and later became known as “Leslie’s Retreat\,” is now quite familiar — especially after the big 250th anniversary reenactment a few weeks ago\, and several educational events about it. \nHere in Danvers on April 23rd\, an illustrated program will explore the human side of the near-miss episode\, along with its geographical and social context. \nWho was the “Leslie” of “Leslie’s Retreat” ? — Why did he and his Regular Army troops march through the crowded and volatile metropolis of Marblehead to march into Salem? — And where in Marblehead did they land? \nSocial and cultural historian Judy Anderson of Marblehead will introduce Colonel Alexander Leslie as a person\, along with a few of the other individuals who were involved — most of whom were remarkably young ! … She will also note who were NOT involved\, contrary to common assumptions and portrayals of the tense confrontation on that cold February day. … Along the way\, she will illuminate what Marblehead actually was in 1775\, as opposed to what people think it was — especially in relation to Danvers and Salem. SUMMARY:“By the First Ship from Salem:” The Voyage of the Schooner Quero\, April 28\, 1775.
DESCRIPTION:Salem Maritime National Historic Site is telling the story of a key but lesser-known voyage across the Atlantic Ocean 250 years ago to deliver news of rebellion in Massachusetts. In April 1775\, after the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, the race was on to control the narrative of the rebellion. Leaving from Derby Wharf onboard the schooner “Quero\,” Salem patriot Captain John Derby and his crew set sail for England on April 28th\, 1775. Onboard the ship were written accounts of the battle and sworn affidavits by participants. They aimed to beat the British ship “Sukey\,” which was carrying the British military report of the battles back to England. Despite the “Sukey” leaving four days earlier\, the nimble “Quero” arrived almost two weeks before the British vessel. The written accounts from the “Quero” were delivered to London\, where they were quickly disseminated throughout England.\n\n\nTo commemorate the 250th anniversary of the voyage of the “Quero\,” Salem Maritime National Historic Site is hosting a FREE EVENT at 7 pm on Monday\, April 28\, at the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center (2 New Liberty Street). Titled “By the First Ship from Salem: The Voyage of the Schooner Quero\,” curator Dr. Emily Murphy will highlight the historical significance of this race across the Atlantic. Living history practitioners will read the original accounts from the “Quero” and the “Sukey.” Join us as we explore the tumultuous start of the American Revolution and how the news spread in 1775.\n\n\n\n\nNo reservations are required.

Thousands of African Americans were enslaved\, up to 20% of the entire population of the colonies. In Newburyport\, Black voices spoke up forcefully for their liberty and equality amid the revolutionary fervor\, and helped turn the tide in Massachusetts against slavery. DESCRIPTION:A dramatization of ‘A Gambrel Roof’\, a poem by Lucy Larcom. \nA creative multi-disciplinary theatrical presentation of a circa 1875 local poem about the historic Danvers Jeremiah Page House. Period music\, an art installation\, historic tea blends\, and signature cakes add to the illustration of the story: \nIn about 1770\, when the British monarchy started taxing tea in the colonies\, Jeremiah told Sarah that “no tea shall be drunk in this house”.  However\, while her husband was away one day\, Sarah and two friends secretly had their tea ON the roof of the house.  In Sarah’s words\, “Upon a house is not within it”\, so she was still obeying her husband’s wishes.  This story was told to Anne L. Page\, Jeremiah’s granddaughter\, by a family friend many years later. Anne then told it to her friend Lucy Larcom\, the famous Beverly poet.  Lucy romanticized the story in the poem “A Gambrel Roof\,” written as the 100th birthday of our nation approached and published in the Atlantic Monthly. \nThere will be a Q&A session after the production\, moderated by historian Dan Gagnon. \nWheelchair accessible building and parking available. DESCRIPTION:The 250th Anniversary Reenactment of The Battle of Bunker Hills aims to accurately portray the events and faithfully represent the people involved in the conflict of June 17\, 1775. Our mission is to celebrate and commemorate the actions and sacrifices of the men and women of all sides of the Battle of Bunker Hill through careful research\, public demonstrations\, civic engagement and educational outreach. Through these means\, we endeavor to increase understanding of the Battle of Bunker Hill\, and to bring to life the stories and voices of those long gone or purposefully excluded: when you see us\, think of them. \nThe first pitched battle of the American War for Independence was fought in stages. Our reenactment of the battle will do the same. The recreated battle will be broken up into a series of vignettes and lectures\, as well as the tactical demonstrations. Beginning each morning\, Colonial forces will race to build fortifications atop the hill as the Royal Navy bombards the American position to soften its defense in preparation for amphibious assault. British soldiers will then be ferried to the beachhead before charging the American lines – attacking the hill three times before taking it through bitter combat. \nBefore and after the tactical demonstrations\, interpreters portraying specific historical figures will give context to the events of June 1775\, detailing how the battle transformed their lives and our nation. Between each action\, visitors will have the opportunity to meet reenactors and learn about the perspectives of the people they portray.

British soldiers will then be ferried to the beachhead before charging the American lines – attacking the hill three times before taking it through bitter combat. \nBefore and after the tactical demonstrations\, interpreters portraying specific historical figures will give context to the events of June 1775\, detailing how the battle transformed their lives and our nation. SUMMARY:Trumpeters of Sedition: How the Printing Press created a Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Gary Gregory\, proprietor of the Printing Office of Edes & Gill\, will talk about the role of the printing press in the American Revolution. Printed pamphlets\, broadsides\, and newspapers energized the revolution\, and it was the printing press that produced the Declaration of Independence. Gary will use his replica of an English Common Press\, a wooden hand-press that now resides at the Museum of Printing\, to demonstrate the technology in use at the time of the American Revolution. \nThis event is funded in part by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) through the Massachusetts 250 Grant Program. This program supports the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution through programs that highlight historic themes of revolution and independence\, celebrate significant ‘firsts’ in Massachusetts and commemorate the state’s past 250 years.

In this walking tour down Middle Street — one of Gloucester’s oldest streets – we will step back in time to meet people who were witness to Revolution right from this spot; see where they lived and gathered\, in houses still standing today; and hear the stories of the roles they played in defending liberty\, as patriots\, privateers\, preachers and more. This tour was developed in conjunction with the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you walk Middle Street in downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street.
