SUMMARY:The 250th Anniversary Battle of Bunker Hill Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:The 250th Anniversary Reenactment of The Battle of Bunker Hills aims to accurately portray the events and faithfully represent the people involved in the conflict of June 17\, 1775. Our mission is to celebrate and commemorate the actions and sacrifices of the men and women of all sides of the Battle of Bunker Hill through careful research\, public demonstrations\, civic engagement and educational outreach. Through these means\, we endeavor to increase understanding of the Battle of Bunker Hill\, and to bring to life the stories and voices of those long gone or purposefully excluded: when you see us\, think of them. \nThe first pitched battle of the American War for Independence was fought in stages. Our reenactment of the battle will do the same. The recreated battle will be broken up into a series of vignettes and lectures\, as well as the tactical demonstrations. Beginning each morning\, Colonial forces will race to build fortifications atop the hill as the Royal Navy bombards the American position to soften its defense in preparation for amphibious assault. British soldiers will then be ferried to the beachhead before charging the American lines – attacking the hill three times before taking it through bitter combat. \nBefore and after the tactical demonstrations\, interpreters portraying specific historical figures will give context to the events of June 1775\, detailing how the battle transformed their lives and our nation. Between each action\, visitors will have the opportunity to meet reenactors and learn about the perspectives of the people they portray.

SUMMARY:Trumpeters of Sedition: How the Printing Press created a Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Gary Gregory\, proprietor of the Printing Office of Edes & Gill\, will talk about the role of the printing press in the American Revolution. Printed pamphlets\, broadsides\, and newspapers energized the revolution\, and it was the printing press that produced the Declaration of Independence. Gary will use his replica of an English Common Press\, a wooden hand-press that now resides at the Museum of Printing\, to demonstrate the technology in use at the time of the American Revolution. \nThis event is funded in part by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) through the Massachusetts 250 Grant Program. This program supports the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution through programs that highlight historic themes of revolution and independence\, celebrate significant ‘firsts’ in Massachusetts and commemorate the state’s past 250 years.

SUMMARY:First Shot of the American Revolution?
DESCRIPTION:Did you know there was a shot fired in Danvers\, MA during August of 1774? \nGeneral Gage’s “87 Days at Danvers” June 2 – August 27\, 1774 \nA presentation and discussion of what should be viewed as the First Campaign of the American Revolutionary War. And\, contrary to popular thought\, within that ‘juggernaut’ perhaps the ‘First’ shot fired in that War possibly occurring in Danvers Massachusetts on August 24\, 1774. \nUnbelievably what occurred during those crucial 87 days has been vastly ignored and dismissed by virtually every history professional. What few who mentioned that period touched upon it lightly – noting nothing worthy of mention. Some describing Governor-General Gage’s time on the North Shore as a geopolitical campaign\, inferring that it was more of a summer vacation – it was not. \nThis talk is to review the mosaic of known facts significantly pertinent to the American Revolutionary War which occurred during those 87 days and put into perspective the overt acts of revolt which both preceded and followed that time.

DESCRIPTION:Arnold was still on the Patriots’ side of the Revolution\, he and his troops camped in Danvers? \nOne of the most strategic and daring exploits of the patriot cause during the revolution. Part of the troops encamped in the Town of Danvers on the night of September 14\, 1775 on their way to Newburyport where they embarked for the Kennebec and their famous march through the pathless wilds of Maine successfully accomplished in spite of formidable obstacles and excessive privations. Native Americans\, specifically the Abenaki\, played a role as scouts and guides\, and there was also hope for broader support from the Canadian Indigenous populations. \nIn September 1775\, early in the American Revolutionary War\, Colonel Benedict Arnold led a force of 1\,100 Continental Army troops on an expedition from Cambridge in the Province of Massachusetts Bay to the gates of Quebec City.

It was a journey marked by hypothermia\, disease\, starvation\, hurricanes\, and blizzards. Dozens perished; survivors endured eating everything from dogs to lip salve before reaching their target. SUMMARY:The 1775 Quebec Expedition from Newburyport: Following Their Footsteps
DESCRIPTION:On September 19\, 1775\, over 1\,100 men departed Newburyport on a secret mission to capture Quebec—led by Benedict Arnold and planned with George Washington. \nJoin Jack Santos as he recounts the stories of Newburyport’s patriots on this daring expedition through the wilderness as we celebrate its 250th anniversary. \n250 years ago this year\, on the 19th of September\, 1775\, 1100 farmers\, soldiers\, merchants\, teachers\, and laborers left Newburyport on eleven ships for a secret\, bold attack on Quebec City. \nHad the plan worked\, there likely would have been no revolutionary war\, and Quebec would have been the 14th state in a new United States of America. \nRelatively recently\, Jack Santos put his hiking boots on his feet\, and his kayak on his car\, to follow Arnold’s trail through Maine. He followed the diary\, maps\, and stories of Newburyport soldiers. DESCRIPTION:Historian Alexander Cain returns to Newburyport to explore one of the most tense and transformative moments in American history in this engaging lecture on Massachusetts and Newburyport in early 1776. As the Siege of Boston drags through a bitter winter\, he will discuss civilian suffering inside the town\, the controversial use of smallpox in efforts to break the stalemate\, and the evolving roles of the militia and the Continental Army. He then turns to Newburyport’s own story: the growing rumblings of independence\, the dangerous position of Loyalists\, and the unleashing of the town’s most potent weapon in support of the American cause: its “wolfpack” fleet of privateers\, which struck at the heart of British supply lines and reshaped Newburyport’s economy and identity on land and at sea. \nAlex has authored numerous research articles and presentations on the American Revolution\, including the Battles of Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill\, the Siege of Boston\,Massachusetts privateers and the experiences of New England and New York loyalist refugees during the Burgoyne Campaign. In addition\, he has published two books: We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution and I See Nothing but the Horrors of a Civil War: The Loyalists of McAlpin’s Corps of American Volunteers. He is also the creator of the blog and podcast Historical Nerdery (historicalnerdery.com). Join Nina Sankovitch\, author of American Rebels: How the Hancock\, Adams\, and Quincy Families Fanned the Flames of Revolution to explore the the efforts of these leading New England families to foment support for the American Revolution in the decade leading up to the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence. \nThe fight for independence never would have succeeded if New Englanders\, across class lines and from all backgrounds\, had not joined the fight. DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Emily Murphy as she discusses Essex County’s Revolutionary War at Sea \nWe all learn about the land battles that began the American Revolution but less is known about the merchants and mariners who risked their livelihoods and lives to take the battle to the British on the high seas. This lecture will explore the world of the privateersmen and navy sailors who supplied one of Essex County’s major contributions to the Revolutionary War effort. SUMMARY:The Battle of Gloucester Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:History will once again come alive on the shores of Gloucester next summer\, as the organizers who hosted the successful Battle of Bunker Hill 250 reenactment come together to commemorate the lesser-known Battle of Gloucester\, an early naval skirmish during the Revolutionary War that led directly to the creation of the U.S. Navy. \nThe commemorative events\, including battle reenactments by land and sea and historical interpretations of life in 18th-century Gloucester\, will be held on Saturday\, June 20\, and Sunday\, June 21\, 2026\, at Stage Fort Park. \nAs our country celebrates America250 in 2026\, this reenactment will be one of the premier events in Massachusetts honoring the birth of the U.S. Navy. \nImage credit: Battle of Gloucester
