Join historian and educator Bill Quigley\, who has examined this long-standing narrative\, to learn the truth of this history. DESCRIPTION:Title: Wood Type Use\, History\, and Identification lecture and workshop\, 1 pm\nEvent leader: James Grieshaber\nCost: Free with Museum admission\nDate: Saturday March 15\nStart time: 1 pm \nThis lecture will cover aspects of wood type history\, as seen through the lens of the historic Wood Type Pattern Library of Virgin Wood Type. James Grieshaber\, who wrote The Virgin Wood Type Bible\, is a\nnoted type historian and type designer who will also speak to some of the uses of wood type printing historic broadsides. He will be in residence at the Museum of Printing for a week prior to the lecture helping identify and organize the museum’s wood type collection\, and will be presenting on what he’s found there. \nVirgin Wood Type produces twentieth-century wood fonts using original patterns from historic wood type manufacturers\, as well as developing revivals of Victorian-era wood type classics. They also issue new designs from contemporary type designers\, produced in the traditional manner\, using a vintage pantograph router\, originally owned by American Wood Type Mfg. Co. \nThe Virgin Wood Type Bible enables the reader to gain insight into the history of\, and be able to identify\, over 500 historic wood type designs. To accomplish this\, Grieshaber has located and researched all of the known printed catalogs from the makers\, as well as considered physical clues on the over 300 fonts represented in the Virgin Wood Type Pattern Library. These include patterns from American\, Acme\, Allied\, Empire\, and some from Stephenson\, Blake who had a US distribution agreement with American Wood Type. Also included are new fonts manufactured by Virgin Wood Type\, designed by the Grieshaber and others\, which often draw on historical models. \nJames Grieshaber has been a designer for newspaper and advertising agencies\, and a type designer for P22 Type Foundry\, Typeco\, and others. James is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology and has taught Typography at RIT. While working as a wood type designer and cutter for Virgin Wood Type\, Grieshaber cleaned\, cataloged\, and identified all the historic wood type patterns in their collection\, which led him to create this book. \nFunding by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) Massachusetts 250 Grant Program. Supporting the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution with projects that highlight historic themes of revolution and independence\, celebrate significant “firsts” in Massachusetts history\, or take a creative or innovative approach to commemorating the state’s past 250 years.

SUMMARY:For the Defense and Safety of the Province: Essex County Prepares for War
DESCRIPTION:****THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT****\nJoin us for a lecture by Historian Alex Cain\, followed by drilling demonstrations performed by reenactors from Danvers & Lexington. \nIn October 1774\, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress ordered the towns across the colony to prepare for war with England. In response\, Essex County entered a wartime phase that included creating minute-man companies\, stockpiling arms\, ammunition\, and equipment\, and establishing a defense network ready to mobilize if the redcoats marched from Boston into the countryside. Join Alexander Cain as he discusses the county’s response to the British threat of war on the eve of Lexington and Concord. \n \nAfter the lecture\, attendees can stay to witness live demonstrations of the types of drills used by local militias in 1775. Reenactors from the Danvers Alarm List Company will demonstrate the Pickering Manual of Arms\, while the Lexington Minutemen will demonstrate the 1764 Crown Manual. These demonstrations will offer a hands-on look at how militias trained and prepared for battle in the years leading up to the Revolution. \nGuests are welcome to arrive at 9:00 am for some coffee and light refreshments\, the lecture will begin at 9:30am with the drilling demonstrations to follow right after. \nThe Lecture portion will be limited to 75 participants but all are welcome to attend the drill demonstrations. Please be aware that the reenactors will be firing muskets during these demonstrations\, which will result in loud booms and smoke. \nREGISTER HERE\nMeredith Farm is a privately owned\, 188-acre farm in Topsfield\, which has been recently renovated. Its 1793 Barn houses an extensive private collection of artifacts related to American history; This barn is where the lecture portion will take place. \nThis program is part of Essex County Revolution 250.Essex County Revolution 250 is an initiative of Essex Heritage in partnership with Massachusetts Rev250 and dozens of regional museums\, heritage sites\, and organizations\, with the intention of raising awareness and highlighting the diverse stories of Essex County\, Massachusetts residents\, free and unfree\, during the American Revolutionary period.

SUMMARY:When Redcoats Marched in Marblehead
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, February 26\, 1775\, about 250 British soldiers marched through Marblehead\, sent by the royal governor to search for weapons. When that column of redcoats stalled at a drawbridge in Salem\, their commander ordered locals to let them pass. Militia companies were assembling to stop them. If that confrontation had turned violent\, it could have been the start of the Revolutionary War\, almost two months before the first shots at Lexington. \nThis talk puts that confrontation in February 1775 in the larger context of the Massachusetts Patriots’ effort to assemble a military force\, the royal governor’s attempts to stop them\, and how that stalemate eventually led to April 19. It digs below myths attached to “Leslie’s Retreat” to highlight eyewitness accounts of a day the Revolutionary War might have begun\, but didn’t. \nJ.L. Bell is the author of The Road to Concord: How Four Stolen Cannon Ignited the Revolutionary War\, as well as a book-length study for the National Park Service and many articles for the Journal of the American Revolution and other outlets. He has spoken at many historic sites and institutions in greater Boston\, Mount Vernon\, the American Revolution Institute in Washington\, and the Fraunces Tavern Museum in New York. DESCRIPTION:The Revolution Ball is a colonial dress/black tie evening of live music\, dancing\, food\, and drinks. The event celebrates the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Leslie’s Retreat from the Salem gun powder raid of 1775. \nIn February of 1775\, Colonel Alexander Leslie and his British regulars were sent to raid the gunpowder and cannon stores of Salem. On their way through Marblehead and Salem\, an alarm was raised and townsfolk and local militia responded in large number to impede Leslie and his soldiers. Rather than the confrontation ending in violence\, collaboration and diplomacy won the day\, thanks to local minister Rev. Thomas Barnard\, Captain John Felt\, Colonel David Mason\, and Colonel Leslie. \nThe evening’s events will begin with period drinks\, heavy hors d’oeuvres\, and music. Period dancing will commence in the ballroom\, led by Commonwealth Vintage Dancers. Local reenactors will be present\, both to take photos with and to participate in the evening’s festivities. DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join at 9:30am at St. Peter’s-San Pedro Episcopal Church at 24 St. Peter’s Church to learn the history behind Leslie’s Retreat\, and to hear from current elected officials. For more information about this program CLICK HERE  \nBeginning at 10:30 am with the tolling of the church bells\, the Red Coats will begin their march towards the North Bridge for a live reenactment of Leslie’s Retreat. Public are encouraged to view the interaction between the Red Coats and local militia from the designated viewing spot on the North Bridge. The actual reenactment on the North Bridge will start right at 11am. For more event information about this event CLICK HERE \n \nThe Salem Gunpower Raid of February 26th\, 1775\, known locally as “Leslie’s Retreat”\, was a significant incident leading up to the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. On Sunday\, February 26th\, 1775\, Lt. Colonel Alexander Leslie of the 64th Regiment of Foot embarked from Castle Island in Boston Harbor aboard the HMS Lively to confiscate some cannon the Salem militia had recently secured. Leslie’s orderly landing and march from Marblehead to Salem was noticed and the alarm raised. By the time he arrived in Salem\, the drawbridge across the North River to where the cannons were stashed\, had been raised. A large rabble of Salemites had formed surrounding and upon the Bridge – a tense situation only grew more excited as British troops attempted to requisition some small boats to cross the North River. \nAfter a few hours and stiff negotiation between Col. Leslie\, Captain John Felt\, Colonel Timothy Pickering and Rev. Thomas Barnard\, an agreement was met. The frequently cited account of the incident by Charles Endicott mentions\, “By the prudence and praise-worth forbearance of Colonel Leslie\, any serious collision with the troops was happily averted”. Under a lesser officer than Leslie\, it is easy to imagine the inciting incident of the Revolution starting at our North Bridge rather than Concord’s. The drawbridge would be lowered\, Col. Leslie and his troops would march 30 rods (~500 feet) into North Salem to do their search\, accomplishing their mission of searching for the guns\, before returning to their vessel in Marblehead Harbor and ultimately back to Boston. While no shots were fired that day\, the incident is historically significant on several counts and deserves our recognition and commemoration. A British magazine published April 1775 stated that “the Americans have hoisted the standard of liberty at Salem”\, clearly viewing this as an inciting incident to the anticipated conflict. \nThis event is Presented by Salem 400+ with the active support of The Leslie’s Retreat Salem Resistance.
