SUMMARY:Choate Island Day
DESCRIPTION:Spend a day with us in celebration of Choate Island – the crown jewel of the Crane Wildlife Refuge. Here\, deer and foxes roam through fields that once housed herds of sheep\, and osprey fly over breathtaking views of Essex Bay. The island was first home to indigenous farmers and fishers\, then to generations of the Choate family\, and was later a retreat for Cornelius and Miné Crane\, who loved the place so much they decided to be buried at the summit. \nThis year\, we are again offering both a Self-Guided and Guided experience. Both will allow visitors to explore the extent of the island. The Guided experience will be led by a trained guide for the first 90 minutes of the program on a more thoroughly interpreted walk across the island\, after which visitors will be free to take their time getting back to the boat dock. The Guided experience starts at the island-side boat dock and ends at the Choate Island summit. However\, we will have staff and volunteers scattered across the island to provide interpretation for self-guided visitors as well. See ticketing options below for Guided and Self-Guided tours. \nPark at Crane Beach\, which is at the end of Argilla Road. Parking will be free for this event. Board our shuttle bus to take you straight down to the boat dock (less than 5-minute drive). There you can check in (if you purchased tickets online) or buy tickets “at the door” (if available) before boarding the ferry to the island\, which is less than a 10-minute boat trip one-way. The shuttles will run continuously between 10AM and 3PM. The last boat returns from the island at 3PM. \nBelow is a sampling of events for the day (subject to change): \nTalks on Choate Island life\, human\, and natural history\nProctor Barn open house\nChoate House self-guided tours\nHikes to the Crane Burial Site\nSelf-guided walking tour\nKids scavenger hunt\nShoreline walk and beachcombing\nLight refreshments will be served. Listen in as our Curatorial Director\, John Leysath\, presents on the History of Medieval Arms & Armor. Enjoy captivating performances for wandering artists\, including a storyteller\, a harpist\, a bubble faery\, and other enchanting entertainers. Plus\, little ones will enjoy our kids’ tent offering little princes and princesses crafts for hands-on fun. \nWe’re thrilled to announce that James B. Jones and Shelley Wolfe from the Emmy Award-winning Netflix series Love on the Spectrum have agreed to return as the King and Queen of our 2026 Renaissance Faire! The couple will be on-site on Saturday\, November 7th\, and will be available for photos! \nCosplay dress-up is encouraged for all ages\, but weapons of any kind are prohibited and will not be permitted on campus. \nYour admission includes access to the interior of the Museum and free access to all scheduled entertainment. (*Vendor services are not included. ) Little ones ages 4 and under are free\, but require a reserved ticket\, and kids ages 5 – 12 are just $10! Museum Members enjoy presale access to admission tickets. \nOff-site parking is required\, and free shuttles will be running all day.
