SUMMARY:Jake Johannsen
DESCRIPTION:A native of Iowa\, Jake Johannsen spent three years at Iowa State University dabbling in veterinarian science and chemical engineering before moving to San Francisco and trying his hand at comedy. Jake sought to make his comedic mark on the city at a time when San Francisco was fostering the likes of young talents such as Bobcat Goldthwait and Dana Carvey. Jake made his own comedy debut during an open mic night at San Francisco’s Cobbs Comedy Club. Four years later\, in 1986\, he won the 11th Annual San Francisco Stand-Up Comedian Competition. \nA self-confessed raconteur of weird stories\, it’s no wonder that Jake is one of David Letterman’s favorite comics. With forty-four Letterman appearances under his belt\, more than any other comic\, (not to mention a handful of Late Night with Conan O’Brien\, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno\, and Politically Incorrect gigs) Jake is no stranger to late night television. His late night appearances gave Jake the exposure he needed to land his very own HBO comedy special\, This’ll Take About An Hour. Jake received incredible reviews\, strong ratings\, and a Cable Ace Award nomination for Best Writing in an Entertainment Special. People Magazine rated the special as one of the “ten best television shows of the year\,” and TV Guide named it one of the “50 Funniest Moments of TV.” \nJake is also making his mark on the feature world. Jake appeared on the big screen next to Bruce Willis in the Alan Rudolph film Breakfast of Champions. Jake first worked with Rudolph on the film Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle\, in which he co-starred in a cast that included Matthew Broderick\, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Campbell Scott. \nJake’s bizarre take on life and his uniquely intelligent style have made him a regular at comedy clubs all over the country and a former host of Comedy Central’s Two Drink Minimum. Jake has had numerous television appearances as well as his own Comedy Central 1⁄2 hour special. Additionally\, his Comedy Special entitled “i Love You” aired on Netflix and Showtime. Currently you hear Jake on his podcasts at www.jakethis.com.

SUMMARY:Artist Demonstration: Bill Lane
DESCRIPTION:Come see one of our favorite artists in their element as he paints and educates the public about his process. Enjoy a cash bar and free snacks while you watch his creation come to life. \nBill Lane is a painter who primarily uses watercolor to capture the beauty of natural light in his works. He owns a gallery in Chatham\, MA and has won numerous awards\, including Best in Show at Spring Bull Gallery in 2016. \n“Everyday scenes intrigue me the most; be it a barren landscape\, boats in the harbor or city life on a busy day. I observe how the light plays into the scene and reflects off the subjects. I work to capture that light while enhancing my point-of-interest in the painting.” – Bill Lane \nIn partnership with Rockport Art Association.

SUMMARY:Convivencia – A Melopoeia
DESCRIPTION:The time of Convivencia in Spain (800 to 1492) was a period of cultural harmony shared by three faiths. The poetry of Federico Garcia Lorca and others draw inspiration from the poets of that earlier time. Convivencia translates to ‘living together’. This poetry…made a profound impact on Spain’s Generation of ’27\, but\, above all\, influenced the work of Federico Garcia. \nThe Diminished Prophets present the poetry and song of Federico Garcia Lorca and contemporary poetry inspired by him. The words are read by renowned poets\, Rhina Espaillat and Alfred Nicol\, the guitar accompaniment is by John Tavano\, with Roger Kimball on bass and Shannon Muhs on vocals.

SUMMARY:Witch Bottles: Containers of Protection
DESCRIPTION:Witchcraft and folklore traditions are rich and diverse cultural practices that have spanned centuries. These traditions are deeply rooted in local folklore\, with each region having its own unique beliefs and practices\, including New England. Throughout history\, witches have been both revered as wise healers and feared as malevolent sorcerers. In this workshop\, we’ll focus on one tradition used as a form of protection from those malevolent\, unseen forces\, with a concentration on New England.  At the end of the workshop\, everyone will craft a Witch Bottle using antique bottles to take home. Registration required.

SUMMARY:Event: The Salem Witch Trials 1692: After-Hours Tour
DESCRIPTION:Know before you go\nIn person event\nLocation: Witch Trials gallery \nMembers and Salem residents $20; nonmembers $50 \nAll other museum galleries will be closed during the tour. \nJoin us after hours for a special curator-led tour of The Salem Witch Trials 1692. Explore the extraordinary series of events between June 1692 and March 1693 that led to the deaths of 25 innocent women\, men and children who were wrongfully convicted of crimes. More than 300 years later\, the personal tragedies and grievous wrongs that occurred still provoke us to reflect and reckon with the experiences of those involved. \nThis ongoing installation tells this story through tangible fragments directly tied to people in Salem and nearby communities in the late 17th century. A handwritten petition\, a carved loom\, a walking stick — each illuminates an aspect of individuals who lived through Salem’s witch trials and serves as a reminder of the real people impacted by these harrowing events. Don’t miss this chance to ask the exhibition curators your questions!
