SUMMARY:Newburyport Art presents our two February Exhibitions: Elements\, and Featured Artist: Jennifer Day
DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) is thrilled to announce two new exhibitions opening on February 1st! On view in the Sargent and Hartson Galleries is Elements\, an exhibition that responds to elements of nature or “elemental” feelings/experiences in an artist’s life. Running alongside Elements is Featured Artist Jennifer Day\, on view in the Hills Gallery. Additionally\, the Winter Gift Shop will open on Feb 1. A joint reception for Elements and Jennifer Day will be held on Saturday\, February 8th\, from 4:00-6:00 PM. \nElements features 130 artworks by 99 artists from the Newburyport area and beyond. Artists responded with depictions of the natural landscape\, mixed media abstractions of fire\, water and ice\, sculptures reminiscent of rock and clay\, and powerful commentary on the current state of our environment. \nIn the next door Hills Gallery\, Featured Artist Jennifer Day utilizes black oil paint on a gessoed panel to reveal the drama of water without the infinite options of local color. Gray scale sensitivity and range is her goal. To achieve this\, she works reductively by rubbing the surface and scraping her finger methodically through the paint to reveal the light beneath. Jennifer works between two opposites: the geometry of the picture plane versus the challenge of the nebulous\, the fleeting\, and the impulse of nature to escape the plane altogether. \nRunning concurrently alongside Elements and Featured Artist Jennifer Day is the Winter Gift Shop\, on view until March 29th. \nThe galleries are free and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00am–5:00pm and Sunday from 1:00pm–5:00pm. Newburyport Art is closed on Mondays. The ground-floor Hills Gallery has an accessible entrance. More information\, as well as an online gallery is available at newburyportart.org. \nFounded in 1948\, Newburyport Art is dedicated to promoting and exhibiting members’ work and to providing art education and access to the visual arts for the entire community.

SUMMARY:Dianne Reeves
DESCRIPTION:Five-time Grammy winner Dianne Reeves is the world’s pre-eminent jazz vocalist. As a result of her virtuosity\, improvisational prowess and unique jazz and R&B stylings\, Reeves received the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for three consecutive recordings—a Grammy first in any vocal category. She’s touring with Brazilian jazz guitar virtuoso Romero Lubambo. \n“Reeves’ voice ran across the rhythm\, smooth and liquid…Lubambo’s classical guitar solo had a Spanish feel and swung joyfully.”\n– UK Jazz News \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nDIANNE REEVES \nLegendary jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves has recorded and performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. She has also recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim and was a featured soloist with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic. Reeves was the first Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the first vocalist to ever perform at the famed Walt Disney Concert Hall. \nReeves worked with legendary producer Arif Mardin (Norah Jones\, Aretha Franklin) on the Grammy winning A Little Moonlight\, an intimate collection of standards featuring her touring trio. When Reeves’ holiday collection Christmas Time is Here was released\, Ben Ratliff of The New York Times raved\, “Ms. Reeves\, a jazz singer of frequently astonishing skill\, takes the assignment seriously; this is one of the best jazz Christmas CD’s I’ve heard.” \nFeatured in George Clooney’s six-time Academy Award nominated Good Night\, and Good Luck\, Reeves won the Best Jazz Vocal Grammy for the film’s soundtrack. \nIn recent years Reeves has toured the world in a variety of contexts including “Sing the Truth\,” a musical celebration of Nina Simone which also featured Lizz Wright and Angelique Kidjo. She performed at the White House on multiple occasions including President Obama’s State Dinner for the President of China as well as the Governors’ Ball. \nReeves’ most recent release Beautiful Life\, features Gregory Porter\, Robert Glasper\, Lalah Hathaway and Esperanza Spalding. Produced by Terri Lyne Carrington\, Beautiful Life won a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. Reeves is the recipient of honorary doctorates from Berklee College of Music and the Juilliard School. In 2022\, Reeves was the featured vocalist on the soundtrack of The Woman King starring Viola Davis. Reeves has been designated a Jazz Master by The National Endowment for the Arts—the highest honor the United States bestows on jazz artists. \nROMERO LUMAMBO \nIn 1985\, Romero Lubambo came to the United States and brought with him a new sound in Brazilian jazz guitar. Romero’s guitar playing unites the styles and rhythms of his native Brazilian musical heritage with his fluency in the American jazz tradition to form a distinctive new sound. After arriving in New York City\, Romero quickly established himself as a “first call” session and touring guitarist who was in demand not only for his authentic Brazilian sound\, but also for his command with a variety of styles. \nLubambo has performed and recorded with many outstanding artists\, including Dianne Reeves\, Billie Eilish\, Angelique Kidjo\, Michael Brecker\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Kathleen Battle\, Diana Krall\, Herbie Mann\, Wynton Marsalis\, Gal Costa\, Kurt Elling\, Kenny Barron\, Luciana Souza\, Cyro Baptista\, Sergio and Odair Assad\, Ivan Lins\, Grover Washington Jr.\, Vernon Reid\, Flora Purim and Airto\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Harry Belafonte\, Larry Coryell\, Gato Barbieri\, Leny Andrade\, James Carter\, Paula Robison\, Dave Weckl\, Jason Miles\, Cesar Camargo Mariano and many others.

SUMMARY:5-Day Bare Bones Wood Carving Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learning woodcarving is a lot like learning how to write in a language. You need to know the letters of the alphabet and what is a vowel and what is a consonant. You need to learn how to put together a word and understand the meaning of it. Then you need to learn how to form a sentence and a paragraph that carries a theme. These are absolute necessities that you need to know in order to write. The same is true in woodcarving\, there are absolute necessities you need to know in order to carve with intent and confidence. So in all truth\, I need five days of your time in order to get the complete set of fundamentals into both your hands and your head. \nHowever\, I often get asked if I have weekend courses because of time restrictions. For those of you who cannot find time for the five consecutive days\, this is what I do. If you take a two or three-day course you are taking the first two or three days of my five-day workshop which is broken up into daily learning chapters. So three days brings you to chapter three\, two days to chapter two. The weekend workshops will give you a basic understanding of the skill of wood carving which includes hand-carving technique\, sharpening\, and designing skills among other topics but the full training takes five days. You will also do the carving projects to reinforce the hand techniques that we talk about so that you gain much needed muscle memory in your hands. \nSome students may be satisfied with the information learned\, while others may choose to find their way back for another weekend and finish the last two or three days to get all the necessary techniques and insights. When you return\, (it can be during that calendar year or the next) everyone else is at the beginning point on the start of the weekend\, but you pick up where you left off to finish your training. That’s the story in a nutshell. Call me if you are looking for more info. I am happy to answer any questions. \nAll class days run from 9 am – 5 pm. \nFor more information:\nCall: (978) 283-0231\nEmail: david@calvostudio.com\nWebsite: https://www.davidcalvo.com/woodcarving_classes.html
