DESCRIPTION:Know before you go\nVirtual event hosted on Zoom \nFree \nThis event series is a part of PEM Reads. \nContent warning: This book depicts violence\, gore\, animal killing\, cannibalism\, racism\, xenophobia and death. \nJoin us on select Wednesday evenings over Zoom for an amazing\, year-long PEM Reads journey through Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick! Set sail with Dan Lipcan\, the Ann C. Pingree Director of the Phillips Library and curator of our current exhibition Draw Me Ishmael: The Book Arts of Moby Dick\, and David Snider\, Director of Learning and Community Engagement. \nEach session of our voyage will feature a brief special presentation by Dan on the day’s reading and its connections to the exhibition\, followed by a lively discussion facilitated by David. By June 18\, 2025\, we will finish the book together\, exhausted but invigorated with new perspectives on this classic tale — and with the bragging rights that we have completed a Moby-Dick marathon! Participants who complete the book and attend all five sessions will win a special Moby-Dick-related prize from PEM. DESCRIPTION:Know before you go\nIn-person event\nLocation: Morse Auditorium \nIncluded with admission \nThis event includes loud\, sudden noises. \nJoin Jennifer and Gene Yee of Yee Magik to unveil the life and secrets of spiritualist and magician Anna Eva Fay! \nBorn in 1851\, Fay toured internationally as a medium and mentalist and became a household name during the late 19th and early 20th century. Together with her second husband David Pingree\, she also became a highly successful philanthropist\, collector and entrepreneur\, owning multiple quarries and a steamship line. The Fay-Pingree home in Melrose\, Massachusetts\, Heathman Manor\, was visited by Fay’s notable friends such as Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. \nFay’s great-grandniece Jennifer Yee and Jennifer’s husband Gene will present an interactive lecture on Fay\, who is still revered today. Follow the Yees’ decades-long search for lost history and genealogy as they tell how they came to reside at Heathman Manor and carry on Fay’s legacy. Besides broadsides\, lithographs and ephemera from Fay’s performances\, including one of her earliest-known public photos\, audience members might catch a glimpse of a levitating object or a galvanometer with which scientists attempted to divine Fay’s secrets! The performance will also offer a rare peek behind the scenes at spirit cabinets and their roles in art and performance. After a short Q & A\, be prepared to witness a rare performance of the cabinet — don’t blink\, or you’ll miss something! \nThe Yees will be available for a meet-and-greet in Morse Alcove after the performance.

On view in the Sargent and Hartson Galleries is Elements\, an exhibition that responds to elements of nature or “elemental” feelings/experiences in an artist’s life. Running alongside Elements is Featured Artist Jennifer Day\, on view in the Hills Gallery. Additionally\, the Winter Gift Shop will open on Feb 1. A joint reception for Elements and Jennifer Day will be held on Saturday\, February 8th\, from 4:00-6:00 PM. \nElements features 130 artworks by 99 artists from the Newburyport area and beyond. Artists responded with depictions of the natural landscape\, mixed media abstractions of fire\, water and ice\, sculptures reminiscent of rock and clay\, and powerful commentary on the current state of our environment. \nIn the next door Hills Gallery\, Featured Artist Jennifer Day utilizes black oil paint on a gessoed panel to reveal the drama of water without the infinite options of local color. Gray scale sensitivity and range is her goal. To achieve this\, she works reductively by rubbing the surface and scraping her finger methodically through the paint to reveal the light beneath. Jennifer works between two opposites: the geometry of the picture plane versus the challenge of the nebulous\, the fleeting\, and the impulse of nature to escape the plane altogether. \nRunning concurrently alongside Elements and Featured Artist Jennifer Day is the Winter Gift Shop\, on view until March 29th. \nThe galleries are free and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00am–5:00pm and Sunday from 1:00pm–5:00pm. Newburyport Art is closed on Mondays. The ground-floor Hills Gallery has an accessible entrance.
