DESCRIPTION:Plein air painting: Oils or Acrylic with Todd Bonita\nSaturday\, June 28\, 10:00am–5:00pm | Meet at NAA\n$75 for NAA members / $95 non-members\nPlein air painting is the practice of painting outside\, or as the French term\, “en plein air”\, literally translates to\, “in the open air”. \nJoin us with your paint box for a full day of outdoor painting and convening with nature and learning to see like an artist. I will begin with a lecture and demonstration on capturing light\, color and atmosphere on canvas using a simple Impressionistic approach. We will discuss choosing a motif\, composing a harmonized design\, seeing value shapes\, accurate drawing\, and infusing visual poetry into your motif. Students will spend the rest of the day painting while I provide artistic guidance with side-by-side easel assistance. This one day workshop is packed with valuable information that has been passed down from the masters on how to simplify the outdoor painting process.

Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions in the first decades of the 20th century. His paintings from this period capture the local landscape and architecture in a loosely rendered\, light-filled style and are considered by many to be some of his finest works. Also included are watercolors painted by Josephine Nivison Hopper (1883-1968)\, Hopper’s wife and artist in her own right\, whose work gained recognition long before her future husband’s success. Learn how this hillside neighborhood that the Hoppers travelled together inspired their artwork\, as well as the role the area plays in Gloucester history. \nIf you have enjoyed one of our Hopper’s Houses Downtown tours\, the Portuguese Hill tour takes you to another side of the city to see different views. It’s well worth the experience! \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours towards Portuguese Hill and back to downtown Gloucester. DESCRIPTION:Gary Gregory\, proprietor of the Printing Office of Edes & Gill\, will talk about the role of the printing press in the American Revolution. Printed pamphlets\, broadsides\, and newspapers energized the revolution\, and it was the printing press that produced the Declaration of Independence. Gary will use his replica of an English Common Press\, a wooden hand-press that now resides at the Museum of Printing\, to demonstrate the technology in use at the time of the American Revolution. \nThis event is funded in part by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) through the Massachusetts 250 Grant Program. This program supports the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution through programs that highlight historic themes of revolution and independence\, celebrate significant ‘firsts’ in Massachusetts and commemorate the state’s past 250 years.

DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 29\, 2025\n10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nBabson Boulder Parking\nCherry Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nOn Cape Ann\, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things — vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures\, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThis walking tour is three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. Hiking attire and footwear advised; also\, walking poles if you use them. Bring water and insect repellent. The tour will start at the main entrance to Dogtown\, off Cherry Street. Meet at the parking lot a short distance up Dogtown Road\, on the right. There is parking for a few cars in the lot; otherwise\, park along the right side of the road\, after the parking lot\, or along Cherry St. Please arrive 10 minutes early. DESCRIPTION:Juried by Adria Arch\nOpening Reception: Sunday\, June 8\, 2025\, 5pm-7pm \nGallery Hours: Thursday-Sunday\, 12pm-5pm\nThe Cultural Center at Rocky Neck\, Gloucester \nThe Shape of Things\, juried by Adria Arch\, features 17 artists from the greater Boston region: Mary Bablitch\, Steven Cabral\, Cyrille Conan\, Monica DeSalvo\, Carin Doben\, Barbe Ennis\, Bette Frank Leahy\, Roberta Nigro Hall\, Nancy Harrod\, L.Marie Lamarche\, Ellen Liner\, David McCoy\, Laura Menucci\, Kimberly Quint\, Allison Tanenhaus\, Amantha Tsaros\, and Leslie Zelamsky. The 47 pieces in the exhibition include paintings\, mixed media\, sculpture and video\, all of which utilize the fundamental design element of shape as a defining component of the work. \nLecture: The Shape of Abstraction: Tracing a Visual Revolution\, Wednesday\, June 25\, 7pm\nJoin Boston artist and educator Adria Arch for a dynamic visual presentation tracing the evolution of abstract art. From early pioneers like Hilma af Klint and Kandinsky to contemporary innovators\, Arch’s talk explores how abstraction broke from tradition to express deeper emotional and intellectual ideas. Special focus is given to women artists whose contributions have often been overlooked. DESCRIPTION:Know before you go\nIn-person event\nLocation: Ropes Mansion Garden\, 318 Essex St\, Salem \n$5 members; $10 nonmembers \nSlow down\, unplug and awaken your senses on a guided nature immersion in the Ropes Mansion Garden. The program will begin with a facilitated journey through the senses\, inviting rest and wandering. Then\, explore the colors and shapes you observe in the garden through watercolor “dreamscapes.” All the prompts\, ways of sharing and participating are optional and open to interpretation. Art supplies will be provided. \nNote: We will be sitting on the ground for a portion of this program. Please feel free to bring a mat\, towel or pillow. We recommend bringing sunscreen and a closed container of water.
