DESCRIPTION:Curated by Janice Brand\nExhibit Dates: August 21 – September 14\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, August 21\, 4-7 pm\nClosing Reception: Sunday\, September 14\, 2-5pm\nGallery Hours: Sunday & Monday\, 12-5pm; Thursday – Saturday\, 12-7pm \nRephrasing\, an exhibition curated by Janice Brand\, encompasses the mixed-media work of Shira Karman\, Tobi Klein\, Helen Tory\, and Patricia Wellenkamp\, who utilize the concepts of adaptation and revision. This show\, the fifth for the 2025 season at Cove Gallery\, takes into consideration memory\, family\, story-telling\, and definitely redefinition\, or rephrasing. \nShira Karman focuses on fragments that relate to some other time or place\, whether known or unknown. She is interested in how these fragments tell a story that she may know or hope to uncover. \nTobi Klein explores mono-printing\, collage\, and other mixed-media techniques\, taking inspiration from the continual shifting of light\, color\, and pattern of the granite quarries and the sea. She builds a story\, inviting viewers to peel back the layers and look below the surface. \nHelen Tory uses diverse media to express her connection with birds described in her father’s 1930s nature diaries. A variety of paint\, mark-making\, torn papers\, and string elicit each bird’s particular characteristics. \nPatricia Wellenkamp uses a series of carved linoleum blocks to print on cotton and other fabrics. She incorporates embroidery\, paper\, and other elements to add ornamentation and complexity to images that might come from an ancestor’s dress\, dahlias in her garden or imagined landscapes.

DESCRIPTION:Navigating Art & Science\nCurated by Cynthia Roth\, Marge Rack\, and Ronda Faloon\nAugust 28 – October 13\nOpening Reception: Sunday\, September 14\, 4-6pm\nGallery Hours: Thursday-Sunday\, 12-5pm\nExhibiting Artists: Resa Blatman\, Daisy Braun\, Georgie Friedman\, Perri Lynch Howard\, Michelle Lougee\, Michelle Samour\, Jessica Straus\, and Christopher Volpe \nNavigating Art & Science featuring eight artists who are deeply involved in scientific inquiry and activism. While local scientists search for ways to help ocean species be more resilient to survive the rapidly changing marine environment\, these artists\, alert to the predicament\, are creating art with urgent messages for stewardship and action. \nThe exhibit coincides with a city-wide initiative STAND UP for Art & Science\, coordinated by Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute volunteers. \nWhile all the work in the exhibition has been created in response to human impact on the environment\, in addition\, several of the artists have been inspired by expeditions to the Arctic Circle and Greenland and residencies in marine laboratories on Cape Ann and beyond. Required \nFabiola Méndez is a Puerto Rican cuatrista\, singer\, educator\, and Emmy-nominated composer. Her artistic vision and original music focus on the exploration of her culture\, her ancestry\, and her identities. Native to Caguas\, PR\, Fabiola began playing the cuatro\, Puerto Rico’s national instrument\, at six. She got her early music training at the Antonio Paoli School of Music in Caguas and her Bachelor’s in Music from Berklee College of Music\, where in 2018\, she made history as the first graduate to play the Puerto Rican cuatro as the principal instrument. \nFabiola’s mission has always been to share and celebrate the cuatro\, folk music\, and collective story-telling. In doing so\, she’s had the honor of performing at venues such as the NPR Tiny Desk\, Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC\, Celebrity Series of Boston\, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival\, Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña\, among many others. She has also collaborated with many local and international artists\, including the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra\, Pedro Capó\, Andy Montañez\, Danny Rivera\, the Chicago Philharmonic\, and the Boston Landmarks Orchestra. \nHer recordings include Herencia Criolla (2009)\, Al Otro Lado del Charco (2019)\, Afrorriqueña (2021)\, and Flora Campesina (2024). In 2022\, she produced her first documentary\, Negrura\, showcasing Afro-Latinx stories on colorism and discrimination within our communities. \nIn recent years\, she’s had the honor of receiving recognitions such as the Quincy Jones Award\, ambassador for the Puerto Rican Day Parade in NYC\, the Brother Thomas Fellowship\, the Whippoorwill Arts Fellowship\, and the ASCAP Foundation Lucille and Jack Yellen Award. She was also nominated for a Children’s and Family Emmy in the category of Outstanding Interactive Media and won the Latin Artist of the Year by the Boston Music Awards. Her music is featured on the film Beautiful\, FL (Disney+)\, on the TV shows Alma’s Way\, Work It Out Wombats (PBS Kids)\, and Mecha Builders (HBO Max)\, as well as indie films\, jingles\, and TV commercials.

SUMMARY:The Resurrection of Judy Rhines: An Installation by Gabrielle Barzaghi & Peter Littlefield
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 30\, 2025\n11:00 a.m.—5:00 p.m.\nWhite-Ellery House\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA\nFree and open to the public.\nParking is first come first served. \nVisit the White-Ellery House to experience The Resurrection of Judy Rhines\, a site-specific drawing installation by Gabrielle Barzaghi (drawings) and Peter Littlefield (dramaturgy). It is comprised of a series of cardboard dioramas and texts that recount a fictional story about Judy Rhines who\, in 1796\, suddenly disappears after being accused of witchcraft. Some say she died by throwing herself off a Rowan tree. But there have been rumors of sightings of her in the Dogtown Woods. \nA radio play\, The Beginning of the End (of Judy Rhines) by Peter Littlefield\, accompanies the installation. The play is a mystery set in the 1940s. Judy Rhines is a secretary\, until one day\, losing her job and just about everything else\, she learns the ways of a witch. Cast includes Phoebe Potts\, Sarah Hickler\, Michael McNamara\, and Evan Lurie. Recorded and edited by Michael LaMarche. Music by Evan Lurie. \nKathleen Adams will perform her original song\, “Judy’s Lament\,” with words by Peter Littlefield\, at 2pm on Saturdays\, August 23 and 30. \nArtist Bios:\nGabrielle Barzaghi is a visual artist whose work explores the absurdity\, tragedy\, and beauty of the world. Her imagery is evocative of places just beyond the edge of normal experience and has an often otherworldly sensibility about the nature of time and being. Her work is in public and private collections\, including the Cape Ann Museum. She graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts\, and taught drawing at Suffolk University for over 30 years. Barzaghi is represented by Matthew Swift Gallery. Recently her work was shown in the exhibition Lines of Thought / Contemporary Women Artists Draw at Jane Deering Gallery. Curator Judith Tolnick Champa included Barzaghi’s work in the exhibition Reseeding the City / Ethnobotany in the Urban at the Rhode Island State House. Barzaghi’s recent solo show Fear Game was exhibited at the Matthew Swift Gallery. She also made a gigantic drawn backdrop for Peter Littlefield’s staging of the play Dogtown Common. \nPeter Littlefield is a stage director\, playwright\, and dramaturg. He recently staged Percy MacKaye’s Dogtown Common at Windhover\, co-produced by the Gloucester 400+. The backdrop was created by Gabrielle Barzaghi. He adapted and co-staged James M. Barrie’s Peter Pan for the Fisher Center at Bard with director Christopher Alden and stage designer Marsha Ginsberg. He co-directed Handel’s Partenope with Mr. Alden at the English National Opera\, winning the Laurence Olivier Award. His work has appeared at the New York City Opera\, Glimmerglass Opera\, Spoleto Festival\, San Francisco Opera\, Theater Basil\, Prague National Theater\, and other companies in the United States and Europe. He began his career in New York’s downtown. He helped start The Pyramid Club where he staged many original shows. His trilogy of short films\, What She Learned from Plants\, made with Roy Rallo\, screened at the Gloucester Writers Center. He leads a playwrighting workshop there each summer. This show\, the fifth for the 2025 season at Cove Gallery\, takes into consideration memory\, family\, story-telling\, and definitely redefinition\, or rephrasing. \nShira Karman focuses on fragments that relate to some other time or place\, whether known or unknown. She is interested in how these fragments tell a story that she may know or hope to uncover. \nTobi Klein explores mono-printing\, collage\, and other mixed-media techniques\, taking inspiration from the continual shifting of light\, color\, and pattern of the granite quarries and the sea. She builds a story\, inviting viewers to peel back the layers and look below the surface. \nHelen Tory uses diverse media to express her connection with birds described in her father’s 1930s nature diaries. A variety of paint\, mark-making\, torn papers\, and string elicit each bird’s particular characteristics. \nPatricia Wellenkamp uses a series of carved linoleum blocks to print on cotton and other fabrics. She incorporates embroidery\, paper\, and other elements to add ornamentation and complexity to images that might come from an ancestor’s dress\, dahlias in her garden or imagined landscapes.

While local scientists search for ways to help ocean species be more resilient to survive the rapidly changing marine environment\, these artists\, alert to the predicament\, are creating art with urgent messages for stewardship and action. \nThe exhibit coincides with a city-wide initiative STAND UP for Art & Science\, coordinated by Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute volunteers. \nWhile all the work in the exhibition has been created in response to human impact on the environment\, in addition\, several of the artists have been inspired by expeditions to the Arctic Circle and Greenland and residencies in marine laboratories on Cape Ann and beyond. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, August 31\, 2025\n11:00 a.m.—5:00 p.m.\nWhite-Ellery House\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA\nFree and open to the public.\nParking is first come first served. \nVisit the White-Ellery House to experience The Resurrection of Judy Rhines\, a site-specific drawing installation by Gabrielle Barzaghi (drawings) and Peter Littlefield (dramaturgy). It is comprised of a series of cardboard dioramas and texts that recount a fictional story about Judy Rhines who\, in 1796\, suddenly disappears after being accused of witchcraft. Some say she died by throwing herself off a Rowan tree. But there have been rumors of sightings of her in the Dogtown Woods. \nA radio play\, The Beginning of the End (of Judy Rhines) by Peter Littlefield\, accompanies the installation. The play is a mystery set in the 1940s. Judy Rhines is a secretary\, until one day\, losing her job and just about everything else\, she learns the ways of a witch. Cast includes Phoebe Potts\, Sarah Hickler\, Michael McNamara\, and Evan Lurie. Recorded and edited by Michael LaMarche. Music by Evan Lurie. \nKathleen Adams will perform her original song\, “Judy’s Lament\,” with words by Peter Littlefield\, at 2pm on Saturdays\, August 23 and 30. \nArtist Bios:\nGabrielle Barzaghi is a visual artist whose work explores the absurdity\, tragedy\, and beauty of the world. Her imagery is evocative of places just beyond the edge of normal experience and has an often otherworldly sensibility about the nature of time and being. Her work is in public and private collections\, including the Cape Ann Museum. She graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts\, and taught drawing at Suffolk University for over 30 years. Barzaghi is represented by Matthew Swift Gallery. Recently her work was shown in the exhibition Lines of Thought / Contemporary Women Artists Draw at Jane Deering Gallery. Curator Judith Tolnick Champa included Barzaghi’s work in the exhibition Reseeding the City / Ethnobotany in the Urban at the Rhode Island State House. Barzaghi’s recent solo show Fear Game was exhibited at the Matthew Swift Gallery. She also made a gigantic drawn backdrop for Peter Littlefield’s staging of the play Dogtown Common. \nPeter Littlefield is a stage director\, playwright\, and dramaturg. He recently staged Percy MacKaye’s Dogtown Common at Windhover\, co-produced by the Gloucester 400+. The backdrop was created by Gabrielle Barzaghi. He adapted and co-staged James M. Barrie’s Peter Pan for the Fisher Center at Bard with director Christopher Alden and stage designer Marsha Ginsberg. He co-directed Handel’s Partenope with Mr. Alden at the English National Opera\, winning the Laurence Olivier Award. His work has appeared at the New York City Opera\, Glimmerglass Opera\, Spoleto Festival\, San Francisco Opera\, Theater Basil\, Prague National Theater\, and other companies in the United States and Europe. He began his career in New York’s downtown. He helped start The Pyramid Club where he staged many original shows. His trilogy of short films\, What She Learned from Plants\, made with Roy Rallo\, screened at the Gloucester Writers Center. He leads a playwrighting workshop there each summer. DESCRIPTION:Curated by Janice Brand\nExhibit Dates: August 21 – September 14\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, August 21\, 4-7 pm\nClosing Reception: Sunday\, September 14\, 2-5pm\nGallery Hours: Sunday & Monday\, 12-5pm; Thursday – Saturday\, 12-7pm \nRephrasing\, an exhibition curated by Janice Brand\, encompasses the mixed-media work of Shira Karman\, Tobi Klein\, Helen Tory\, and Patricia Wellenkamp\, who utilize the concepts of adaptation and revision. This show\, the fifth for the 2025 season at Cove Gallery\, takes into consideration memory\, family\, story-telling\, and definitely redefinition\, or rephrasing. \nShira Karman focuses on fragments that relate to some other time or place\, whether known or unknown. She is interested in how these fragments tell a story that she may know or hope to uncover. \nTobi Klein explores mono-printing\, collage\, and other mixed-media techniques\, taking inspiration from the continual shifting of light\, color\, and pattern of the granite quarries and the sea. She builds a story\, inviting viewers to peel back the layers and look below the surface. \nHelen Tory uses diverse media to express her connection with birds described in her father’s 1930s nature diaries. A variety of paint\, mark-making\, torn papers\, and string elicit each bird’s particular characteristics. \nPatricia Wellenkamp uses a series of carved linoleum blocks to print on cotton and other fabrics. She incorporates embroidery\, paper\, and other elements to add ornamentation and complexity to images that might come from an ancestor’s dress\, dahlias in her garden or imagined landscapes.
