This exhibit features recent portraits by prominent women artists from the Rocky Neck Art Colony\, including Elizabeth Bish\, Janice Brand\, Robin Colodzin\, Susan Ellis\, Elizabeth Gauthier\, Janet Grover\, Joyce Roessler\, Amy Sudarsky\, and Helen Tory. This inspiring show highlights the profound impact of portraiture in capturing the essence\, strength\, and diversity of women’s experiences. \nIn addition to contemporary works\, the exhibition will feature a copy of Winslow Homer’s The Lookout – All’s Well painted by Irene Fenton Hammond\, wife of John Hays Hammond Jr.\, who resided at Hammond Castle Museum until her passing in 1959 and was a member of the Rocky Neck Art Colony. \nAlso on display will be a painting by Natalie Hays Hammond\, the accomplished artist\, playwright\, and sister of museum founder John Hays Hammond Jr. Her painting\, Costume Designs\, Series B\, No. 3\, Medieval Abbess\, is on loan from the Hammond Museum & Japanese Stroll Garden in North Salem\, NY\, which Natalie founded in 1957. \nThis exhibit is open daily from Saturday\, March 22 through Sunday\, March 30 daily from 12:00pm to 5:00pm and the last entrance is at 4:15pm\, with the exception on Sunday March 30 when the exhibit will host a closing reception from noon to 2:00pm during which time purchased painting may be picked up. Attendees will have access to the small interior rooms leading down to the Great Hall and the Great Hall. The Museum will be closed to tours.

Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions in the first decades of the 20th century. His paintings from this period capture the local landscape and architecture in a loosely rendered\, light–filled style and are considered by many to be some of his finest works. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you loop around downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. Known mainly as a portraitist\, Browne was commissioned to paint the portraits of such turn-of-the-century luminaries as Henry Ford\, John Hayes Hammond Sr.\, Howard Blackburn and King Alfonso of Spain. Here we find Margaret Fitzhugh Browne turning her attention to a more conventional subject\, her sister Bonnie. \nJoin us Thursdays for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. Floral arrangements will draw inspiration from the exhibition on view\, Breath of Life – C.B. Fisk\, Designers & Builders of Pipe Organs. The exhibition will focus on a selection of Fisk’s projects using scale models\, photographs\, and carvings providing floral artists with a multitude of options for their floral response. Also included are watercolors painted by Josephine Nivison Hopper (1883-1968)\, Hopper’s wife and artist in her own right\, whose work gained recognition long before her future husband’s success. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions in the first decades of the 20th century. His paintings from this period capture the local landscape and architecture in a loosely rendered\, light–filled style and are considered by many to be some of his finest works. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you loop around downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. SUMMARY:Rocky Neck Historic Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Rocky Neck Historic Walking Tour are back for the season! This public walking tour covers the rich history of Rocky Neck Art Colony\, showcasing the many artists who worked here\, especially from the late nineteenth century to today. Artists such as Edward Hopper\, Winslow Homer\, Augustus Buhler\, John Sloan\, Theresa Bernstein\, Stuart Davis\, and Emile Gruppe found artistic inspiration and community in this peninsula. \nJoin one of our docents on the tour and follow a path that held studios and gathering places of the artists\, interspersed with the fishing shacks\, sail lofts\, and schooner docks of the fishing industry that grew up here over the same period. It will include recognition of the many galleries that contribute to the Rocky Neck community today. The tour also describes the importance of transportation and the proliferation of hotels that encouraged the growth of Rocky Neck as an artist community\, as well as other notable historic events. \nRNAC’s Historic Walking Tours last from 1- to 1.5 hours and cover approximately .75 miles. Tours begin at the Rocky Neck Parking Lot and end at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center\, 6 Wonson Street\, Gloucester\, MA. \nParticipants are encouraged to park in the parking lot at the entrance to Rocky Neck where a volunteer tour guide meets the group. Comfortable shoes are encouraged. Be prepared to walk on uneven terrain and up a hill. \nThe 2025 public tours will be take place on Saturdays at 11am:\nMay 24\nJune 7 & 21\nJuly 12 & 26\nAugust 9 & 23\nSeptember 6 & 20 \nTours are limited to 15 people.\nCost: $10 for RNAC members or $25 for nonmembers. \nFor more information email director@rockyneckartcolony.org or call 978-515-7004.
