DESCRIPTION:A Western exhibition at a seaside New England castle? That’s exactly what makes this temporary exhibition so special. \nJoin Hammond Castle Museum for an exclusive opening celebration of “Brave-Too-Much”: The Legend of John Coffee Hays\, an original temporary exhibition presented in partnership with the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Waco\, Texas. Through the loan of museum artwork and fascinating stories\, this unique exhibition introduces New England audiences to the legendary Texas Ranger captain who was also the great-uncle and namesake of John Hays Hammond Jr. \nThe exhibition traces Hays’s extraordinary journey from joining the Texas Rangers at just 19 years old to becoming one of the most respected military leaders of his era. Notable Rangers who served under or alongside him include Samuel Walker\, co-inventor of the Colt Walker revolver\, the first practical six-shooter in the Old West\, and Flacco\, a Lipan Apache chief\, who gave him the nickname “Bravo-Too-Much” (aka “Brave-Too-Much”) for his boldness in battle. \nVisitors will explore his role in the Texas Republic\, the Mexican-American War\, the California Gold Rush\, and the founding of early California communities\, while also examining the complex history of the American frontier and the many cultures that shaped it. \nEvening program:\n5:30 pm–6:00 pm Networking\n6:00 pm–6:45 pm Presentation\n6:50 pm–7:30 pm Exhibit Tours\nLight refreshments will be served. \nBe among the very first to experience the exhibition before it opens to the public during this exclusive evening featuring: \n• Early access to the exhibition\n• A special curator’s presentation by Curatorial Director John Leysath\, sharing the research\, stories\, and historical significance behind the exhibition\n• Western-inspired refreshments and themed treats\n• Time to explore and celebrate this remarkable new exhibition with fellow western history enthusiasts \nFrom the battlefields of the Texas Republic to the halls of Hammond Castle Museum\, discover the surprising family connection that inspired generations and the extraordinary life of one of the American frontier’s most respected leaders. \nAdvance registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Step beyond the formal rooms and into the working heart of the home for a guided house tour focused on servant life at Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens. Once transformed from a simple farmhouse into a gentleman’s estate of the Country Place Era in the 1910s-1930s\, Ashdale Farm relied on a dedicated household staff to maintain its beauty and daily rhythm. \nDrawing on historical research and firsthand accounts\, this tour shares stories of the real people who worked at Ashdale Farm and examines the Coolidges’ sometimes complex relationship with them. From Helen’s bedroom and morning room to the bustling downstairs spaces and servants quarters\, this exclusive\, behind-the-scenes tour will explore parts of the house that are typically not open to the public. \nThis guided tour runs approximately 45 minutes. \nAll ages are welcome! \nPlease note: The tour is not fully accessible\, as it includes the second floor of the house\, which is accessible by stairs only. She is an associate professor at the University of Connecticut. She has a passion for teaching\, especially when she can incorporate hands-on fieldwork\, and she mentors an amazing group of female scientists. \nNational Geographic Live brings our Explorers from the field to Rockport\, live on stage. \nNational Geographic continues to push the boundaries of knowledge\, uncovering new insights about the natural and cultural worlds and strengthening our connection to them and one another.
