SUMMARY:Great Art on Screen: The Immortals: The Wonder of the Museo Egizio
DESCRIPTION:This documentary is a journey among the most beautiful archaeological finds Egypt has left us. \nKha\, architect and builder of tombs for the pharaohs\, must undertake the journey to the Underworld. Telling us the story of his voyage is Jeremy Irons\, in the guise of a narrator. His words take us inside the secret world of Egyptian mythology\, religion and funerary culture\, interweaving the story with the history of the oldest museum in the world\, the Museo Egizio in Turin\, founded in 1824 and will soon be celebrating its 200th anniversary. In fact\, the Kha’s own Tomb is to be found in Turin along with the most complete and most valuable private collection of grave goods outside of Egypt. \nA journey along the Nile\, among the most beautiful archaeological finds Egypt has left us\, the magnificent monuments of Giza\, Luxor\, Karnak\, to the Valley of the Kings and the workers’ village of Deir el-Medina\, the story told by Irons follows the tracks of Italian explorers and archaeologists – their itineraries also leading to the exhibition halls of the Cairo Museum\, the Ägyptischen Museum in Berlin\, the British Museum in London and the Louvre in Paris. \nFrom Ramesses II in Turin\, to the treasure of Tutankhamun in Cairo\, the bust of Nefertiti in Berlin\, the Red Scribe in the Louvre\, and the Rosetta Stone in London. \nFeaturing: Jeremy Irons\nDirector: Michele Mally\nOriginal Soundtrack: Remo Anzovino\nProduction: 3D Produzioni\, Sky\, Nexo Digital\, with the Museo Egizio

SUMMARY:Ice Ship to Calcutta: Captain Pritchard and the Ultimate Ephemera
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Lowell’s Boat Shop Winter Speaker Series\, join us for the tragic tale of Captain Pritchard aboard the Elcano. \nJoin us at the Museum of Old Newbury for an unforgettable evening on Tuesday\, Feb 27\, 2024 at 7:00 PM. \nOn June 15\, 2023\, the Museum of Old Newbury purchased a slate tablet from an auction in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, a notebook-paper sized piece of thin stone\, double-sided and framed in walnut. Notes kept on slate were ephemeral. Slates were used to keep the “rough log”\, and they were erased after the notes were copied down into the ship’s official log. \nThis slate deck log became\, accidentally\, a permanent record of the last moments of a man’s life\, and revealed a gripping story of love\, loss\, murder\, and bicycling in the Himalayas. Intrigued? Come hear the whole wild story and see this piece of ultimate ephemera for yourself. \nThe story of the Elcano has been revealed through a series of partnerships. Lowell’s Boat Shop executive director Graham McKay and MOON director Bethany Groff Dorau worked together to decipher the deck log\, while the Custom House Maritime Museum lent a copy of a journal that revealed another Pritchard – the Captain’s wife Emily – as she made her way to Calcutta and home again. \nJoin us for a Dark and Stormy evening with maritime-themed refreshments.
