SUMMARY:Hidden Histories: Black History Month Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate Black History Month with “Quietly Hidden: A Story of Architectural Salvage and Discovered Craftsmanship\,” a lecture that honors and educates the achievements\, resilience and creativity of Black artisans. Senior Curator\, Christie Jackson will present her research on Long Hill\, with a story of early preservation\, the untold story of enslaved artisans\, and one family’s passion for history all combine. Her groundbreaking research uncovers Long Hill’s enriching history of the Federal-era ornamental carvings salvaged from Charleston\, SC and used in the Sedgwick’s 1921 house that was created in part by highly skilled enslaved craftsmen. \nLong Hill was the Beverly summer home of Atlantic Monthly editor Ellery Sedgwick and his family from 1916 until it was bequeathed to The Trustees in 1979. This lecture will take place inside the the historic home where participants will then join Christie as she gives a tour of the first floor of Long Hill to highlight the architectural elements included in her presentation. SUMMARY:This history of Medieval Arms & Armor & Self-Guided Tours at Hammond Castle Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join Curatorial Director John Leysath for a presentation on the history and engineering of medieval European armaments. On display will be a selection of replica helmets\, armor pieces\, and weaponry from the medieval to Renaissance periods. \nThis hour-long presentation will explore the evolution of armor and weapons throughout the Middle Ages\, as well as the science behind their construction and use. It will include a discussion about the career paths of knights and blacksmiths and a demonstration of how their equipment was cleaned and maintained. The program also features a sneak peek at an original video game developed by the Museum based on this fascinating subject. A short question-and-answer session will conclude the presentation. \nAdmission includes a self-guided tour of the Museum following the program. Arms and Armor is ideal for ages 10 and up.

Join us this February school vacation for this self-guided winter themed family-friendly bundle for use along the Stevens-to-Stevens trail in North Andover to discover the magic within the Winter forest. \nParticipants will be emailed an activity bundle to help them look for clues along the trail and work as a team to discover the tiny world beneath their feet and under their nose. This is a self-guided program. Pre-registration required to receive downloadable bundle of winter themed created activities\, including maps\, scavenger hunt\, crafts\, additional reading list and recipes. \nThe special trail will run from February 16 to March 1. Please use your bundle on any day of your choosing. Please note: the Stevens-to-Stevens trail is less traveled than our major trails and snow drifts may occur.
