DESCRIPTION:Captain Michael Rutstein recounts the events leading to the battle between schooner Hannah and HMS Nautilus\, Oct. 1775. \nJoin Captain Michael Rutstein as he covers the events leading up to the famous battle between the armed American schooner Hannah and HMS Nautilus in October 1775. He will walk us step by step through the engagement and wrap up with the repercussions of this event and its impact on the course of the Revolution here on the North Shore. \nMichael Rutstein: After drafting and then reluctantly abandoning a business plan to create a replica of Hannah\, Rutstein commissioned local boatbuilder Harold Burnham to build a representation of the 1812 Salem privateer FAME in 2003. For 23 seasons\, FAME sailed out of Pickering Wharf in Salem to critical and popular acclaim. In April 2026\, FAME was sold to the Liberty Fleet of Tall Ships in Boston.

The lecture will examine how disputes over cargo\, salvage\, and prize cases during the period tested and refined the young nation’s legal system. Judge Young will also discuss the pivotal role played by Judge John Davis in establishing practical precedents for handling these cases — precedents that would go on to influence the broader framework of American admiralty law. \nAbout the Speaker: \nThe Honorable William G. Young has served as a Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts since 1985\, following eight years on the Massachusetts Superior Court. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School\, he served as a U.S. Army officer before beginning his legal career as law clerk to Chief Justice Raymond S. Wilkins of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. He later practiced law with Bingham\, Dana & Gould and served as Special Assistant Attorney General and Chief Counsel to Governor Francis W. Sargent. An acclaimed teacher of evidence and trial advocacy\, Judge Young has taught at Harvard\, Boston College\, and Boston University. He is also a prolific legal scholar and the author of several influential works on evidence\, trial practice\, and federal jurisprudence.

DESCRIPTION:Women\, Spinning\, and Resistance: Stacey Fraser \nIn the years leading up to the American Revolution\, New England women played an important role in resisting British policies through their everyday lives and work. On August 31\, 1769\, forty-five women in Lexington\, Massachusetts\, gathered for a spinning protest—one of more than sixty such demonstrations held throughout New England between 1768 and 1770. By spinning wool and linen yarn together\, these women demonstrated their ability to produce the textiles needed by their families while rejecting reliance on imported British goods. \nJoin Stacey Fraser for a fascinating look at how women used their social roles\, domestic skills\, and community networks to participate in the growing resistance to British rule. Discover how these seemingly everyday acts of spinning and boycotting became powerful forms of protest in the years leading up to the American Revolutionary War. \nAbout the Speaker:\nStacey Fraser is Assistant Curator at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library in Lexington\, Massachusetts. She recently curated an exhibition exploring Lexington’s role in the American Revolution and chaired the museum’s 50th anniversary committee. Snacks\, baseballs\, and cards are available for purchase. Come and see for yourself how “America’s favorite pastime” was played in the 1860s. The teams competing are based on actual nineteenth-century baseball clubs from New England. \nThe Essex Base Ball Organization is a nonprofit “vintage base ball” group that plays the game as it was played in the 1860s. They are based out of Newbury\, Massachusetts\, and have four teams. The lecture will examine how disputes over cargo\, salvage\, and prize cases during the period tested and refined the young nation’s legal system. Judge Young will also discuss the pivotal role played by Judge John Davis in establishing practical precedents for handling these cases — precedents that would go on to influence the broader framework of American admiralty law. \nAbout the Speaker: \nThe Honorable William G. Young has served as a Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts since 1985\, following eight years on the Massachusetts Superior Court. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School\, he served as a U.S. Army officer before beginning his legal career as law clerk to Chief Justice Raymond S. Wilkins of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. He later practiced law with Bingham\, Dana & Gould and served as Special Assistant Attorney General and Chief Counsel to Governor Francis W. Sargent. An acclaimed teacher of evidence and trial advocacy\, Judge Young has taught at Harvard\, Boston College\, and Boston University. DESCRIPTION:Join Us Mid-Day for Artful Conversations\nTake a midday pause and experience one work of art in depth. \nArtful Conversations are informal\, docent-led gallery experiences that invite visitors to slow down\, look closely\, and engage in thoughtful conversation. Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries. \nThe program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation\, curiosity\, and conversation\, participants are encouraged to share ideas\, consider different perspectives\, and discover new connections together. \nThis week for Artful Conversations \nIn 2025\, CAM acquired two 2023 photographs by Matika Wilbur as part of the Museum’s Native Initiatives\, a project that culminated in a landmark exhibition of Wilbur’s work at the CAM Green. Wilbur’s work reshapes how Indigenous Peoples are represented across the United States\, centering contemporary Native identity and celebrating the vibrancy of Indigenous culture today. \nPlease join CAM docent Maggie Rosa for an engaging conversation as she reflects on what these photographs reveal—about the photographer\, about the individuals portrayed\, and about the evolving stories they invite us to understand more deeply. \nBorn and raised in England\, Maggie Rosa moved to the Chicago in 1968 to work as a research technician at the University of Chicago. During her eight years in Chicago\, she married Joe and obtained her PhD. The two of them did post-doctoral research at Yale and then moved to Cambridge to join the nascent biotech world. They eventually built a weekend home in Gloucester. In 2001 they “saw the light” and moved here permanently to participate in this great community. Maggie is an active volunteer in local organizations\, most recently the City Hall Restoration Commission\, Gloucester Education Foundation\, Cape Ann Museum\, and Generous Gardeners. As a Cape Ann Museum docent\, she serves as an ambassador for Gloucester by introducing visitors\, especially cruise ship visitors\, to Cape Ann’s history and culture. CAM’s Fresnel lighthouse lens is her favorite piece in the Museum because it exemplifies how science\, technology and art were combined to address an urgent need in maritime safety.

DESCRIPTION:It’s Base Ball\, 1864 style at Spencer Peirce Little Farm! These fun\, historically accurate games feature underhand pitching without gloves. A ball bounced once and caught is an out! Snacks\, baseballs\, and cards are available for purchase. Come and see for yourself how “America’s favorite pastime” was played in the 1860s. The teams competing are based on actual nineteenth-century baseball clubs from New England. \nThe Essex Base Ball Organization is a nonprofit “vintage base ball” group that plays the game as it was played in the 1860s. They are based out of Newbury\, Massachusetts\, and have four teams.
