DESCRIPTION:It’s Base Ball\, 1864 style at Spencer Peirce Little Farm! These fun\, historically accurate games feature underhand pitching without gloves. A ball bounced once and caught is an out! Snacks\, baseballs\, and cards are available for purchase. Come and see for yourself how “America’s favorite pastime” was played in the 1860s. The teams competing are based on actual nineteenth-century baseball clubs from New England. \nThe Essex Base Ball Organization is a nonprofit “vintage base ball” group that plays the game as it was played in the 1860s. They are based out of Newbury\, Massachusetts\, and have four teams. They teach the history of baseball through games and demonstrations\, offering youth clinics and lectures on baseball history at historical societies\, libraries\, and other civic organizations. \nSee HNE website for first pitch times; triple headers start at 11 AM\, doubles at noon.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Presentation and Exhibition Preview celebrating the opening of our two new Spring and Summer temporary exhibitions: Inside the Faraday Cage: The Science of Things That Aren’t So and a mini-exhibit A Tale of Two Pianos. \nThis exclusive preview offers guests early access to both exhibitions\, along with curator-led presentations that provide insight into the ideas\, individuals\, and historical context behind the work. \nEvening program:\n5:30 pm–6:00 pm Networking\n6:00 pm–6:45 pm Presentations\n6:50 pm–7:30 pm Tours of the Exhibit\nLight refreshments will be served. \nCuratorial Director John Leysath will present an in-depth exploration of Hammond’s 1951 Faraday cage experiments\, conducted in collaboration with physician and parapsychologist Andrija Puharich and renowned psychic medium Eileen Garrett. His talk examines the broader landscape of mid-20th-century psychic research\, the tension between belief and skepticism\, and the importance of scientific rigor in the study of paranormal phenomena. The presentation also considers the wider influence of this research\, including its connections to government-funded investigations. \nThe exhibition Inside the Faraday Cage features a life-size\, non-working replica of the experimental apparatus\, offering visitors a rare opportunity to step inside and engage with the physical environment of Hammond’s investigations. \nAssistant Curator Donovan Lafontaine will introduce A Tale of Two Pianos\, a focused installation exploring the history behind Hammond’s three major musical inventions. The ‘Pirafon’ piano\, a combination radio\, phonograph\, and piano instrument\, and the ‘Tonal Pedal’ piano\, a system of organ swell-like\, movable shutters for piano instruments. The mini-exhibit will also feature an interactive model of the ‘Tonal Pedal’ system\, for viewers to better understand its features. \nAdvance reservations are required. Space is limited for this preview experience.\nMuseum members and VIP guests enjoy complimentary admission.\nA $15 fee applies to the general public.

The exhibit will be on display at the Cabot House from September 6\, 2025 to July 4\, 2026. Tickets are free and open to the public

In this hands-on program\, kids will learn what sailors ate\, how they kept food from spoiling\, and what they did when someone got sick at sea. \nBecome part of a “crew\,” choose supplies for your ship\, try salting green beans\, and even help mix a remedy for scurvy. Led by educator Dan Marshall\, this interactive program brings history to life through fun activities and demonstrations. \nThis FREE program is best for kids ages 7+\, but all young explorers are welcome! Space is limited\, so please only register the children who will be joining so we can make sure we have enough materials.

Parking is first come\, first served and carpooling is encouraged. \nThis talk by Martha Oaks\, the Museum’s Chief Curator and contributing author to the upcoming Avery\, Gottlieb\, & Rothko: By the Sea exhibition\, will explore Milton Avery and Sally Michel’s earliest visits to Gloucester\, setting the stage for future stays with artist friends. What was it that drew the couple here and inspired them to keep coming back? Who did they rub shoulders with on Cape Ann and who was taking note of their work? Learn what has changed in the local art colony over the past century and what has stayed the same. \nThis lecture is presented in conjunction with the museum’s upcoming exhibition\, Avery\, Gottlieb\, & Rothko: By the Sea\, offering context and insight into the artists and themes in the exhibit. She has written extensively on the art\, artists\, history\, and culture of Gloucester\, Massachusetts\, and Cape Ann\, contributing catalog entries\, articles\, and essays. Oaks has curated numerous exhibitions exploring the history and the artists of Cape Ann and has contributed to Fitz Henry Lane Online\, a digital resource and catalog to the American marine artist. Richard entrances the audience with his wit\, cunning manipulation of language\, and vicious determination—qualities that once won his audience\, ultimately lead to his rapid downfall. \nPerforming from April 9th-12th and 16th-19th\, all performances are at The Natti-Willsky Performance Center\, Home of Gloucester Stage Company\, 267 East Main Street\, Gloucester.
