SUMMARY:Rocky Neck Historic Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Rocky Neck Historic Walking Tour are back for the season! This public walking tour covers the rich history of Rocky Neck Art Colony\, showcasing the many artists who worked here\, especially from the late nineteenth century to today. Artists such as Edward Hopper\, Winslow Homer\, Augustus Buhler\, John Sloan\, Theresa Bernstein\, Stuart Davis\, and Emile Gruppe found artistic inspiration and community in this peninsula. \nJoin one of our docents on the tour and follow a path that held studios and gathering places of the artists\, interspersed with the fishing shacks\, sail lofts\, and schooner docks of the fishing industry that grew up here over the same period. It will include recognition of the many galleries that contribute to the Rocky Neck community today. The tour also describes the importance of transportation and the proliferation of hotels that encouraged the growth of Rocky Neck as an artist community\, as well as other notable historic events. \nRNAC’s Historic Walking Tours last from 1- to 1.5 hours and cover approximately .75 miles. Tours begin at the Rocky Neck Parking Lot and end at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center\, 6 Wonson Street\, Gloucester\, MA. \nParticipants are encouraged to park in the parking lot at the entrance to Rocky Neck where a volunteer tour guide meets the group. Comfortable shoes are encouraged. Be prepared to walk on uneven terrain and up a hill. \nThe 2025 public tours will be take place on Saturdays at 11am:\nMay 24\nJune 7 & 21\nJuly 12 & 26\nAugust 9 & 23\nSeptember 6 & 20 \nTours are limited to 15 people.\nCost: $10 for RNAC members or $25 for nonmembers. \nFor more information email director@rockyneckartcolony.org or call 978-515-7004. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 25\, 2025\n10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nCape Ann Museum Courtyard\, Downtown Campus\n27 Pleasant St\, Gloucester\, MA\, 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nAs a seaport town jutting into the Atlantic\, Gloucester was of strategic importance during the American Revolution and always under threat of attack. The people of the town stood ready to take action against the British\, and many of them did. In this walking tour down Middle Street — one of Gloucester’s oldest streets – we will step back in time to meet people who were witness to Revolution right from this spot; see where they lived and gathered\, in houses still standing today; and hear the stories of the roles they played in defending liberty\, as patriots\, privateers\, preachers and more. This tour was developed in conjunction with the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you walk Middle Street in downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. SUMMARY:Girls on Adventure!
DESCRIPTION:Girls on Adventure offers a unique opportunity for young women entering 7th\, 8th\, or 9th grade to immerse themselves in the world of the maritime sector\, meet inspiring professionals whose work focuses on the sea\, and learn the art of sailing aboard an authentic Tall Ship\, the 1926 Schooner Adventure. \nFrom July 15 – Friday\, Aug. 1\, participants will meet for a total of twelve\, five-hour sessions. In these sessions\, students will meet women working in marine and marine-related fields during visits to sites in Gloucester and Essex as well as during guest visits aboard Adventure. Field trips to the Essex Shipbuilding Museum\, GMGI\, and Applied Materials\, will provide hands-on learning and insights into the diverse career paths available in the maritime industry. \nCentral to the program is the hands-on experience aboard the iconic Schooner Adventure\, a 122’ traditionally-rigged fishing sailboat. Under the guidance of our experienced crew\, participants will learn the ropes of sailing through three dockside training days and six training sails\, mastering essential skills while forging lasting friendships. As the culmination of their journey\, Girls on Adventure participants will have the opportunity to showcase their newfound expertise by inviting friends and family for an evening sail in Gloucester Harbor.

DESCRIPTION:Architectural styles\, like clothing\, come into fashion for functional\, aesthetic\, economic and social reasons. Over time homeowners renovate\, enhance\, and adapt to reflect changing times and fashions. \nJoin us for a walking tour of Newburyport’s architectural styles from the 18th and 19th centuries as found along High Street and the neighborhood near the Museum of Old Newbury. Learn to distinguish prevalent styles\, note changes that have occurred over time\, and determine what questions to ask about historic houses. \nThis approximately 90-minute walk allows ample time to walk and talk with your knowledgeable guide and other participants. Together we will walk through time using the lens of Newburyport’s fashionable old houses! \nWear comfortable shoes for uneven terrain and bring a water bottle. In case of extreme weather\, this event will be an illustrated talk at the Museum of Old Newbury.

Field trips to the Essex Shipbuilding Museum\, GMGI\, and Applied Materials\, will provide hands-on learning and insights into the diverse career paths available in the maritime industry. \nCentral to the program is the hands-on experience aboard the iconic Schooner Adventure\, a 122’ traditionally-rigged fishing sailboat. Under the guidance of our experienced crew\, participants will learn the ropes of sailing through three dockside training days and six training sails\, mastering essential skills while forging lasting friendships. As the culmination of their journey\, Girls on Adventure participants will have the opportunity to showcase their newfound expertise by inviting friends and family for an evening sail in Gloucester Harbor.

Become a Butterfly Detective and help us solve the mysteries of the butterfly world at Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens! \nIn this fun\, hands-on outdoor nature program\, kids will: \n-Read a butterfly-themed story\n-Search for butterflies and caterpillars in their natural habitat\n-Discover what butterflies eat and how they grow\n-Participate in a butterfly themed activity or craft \nKids will use real tools like magnifying glasses\, field guides\, and observation cards as they explore\, observe\, and learn about the magical life of butterflies. A perfect mix of science\, art\, and outdoor adventure! \nHeld at Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens on Tuesday mornings\, join one or all of the sessions and explore the hidden worlds beneath our feet and above our heads.\nRecommended for ages 2-5. Dress for the weather! \nRecommended for children ages 4-10. An adult must attend and register for this program but there is no additional charge. Limit to 2 adults per child. DESCRIPTION:Our friendly\, knowledgeable tour guides share fascinating stories in each of the museum’s period rooms and galleries. \nYou will walk through this Federal-period house\, from its 1808 beginning as a ship captain’s home to its ownership by multiple generations of the Cushing family. See parts of the home as it was lived in\, as well as galleries featuring maritime trade\, the churches of Old Newbury\, and art works by Newburyport native Laura Coombs Hills. \nTours are on the hour\, 11-4pm\, Thursday – Sunday. Pre-order of tickets is encouraged as space cannot be guaranteed without tickets. Please arrive 10 minutes before your tour starts. \nTours are $10\, $8 for seniors\, $5 for those under 18. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, July 20\, 2025\n10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nBabson Boulder Parking\nCherry Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nOn Cape Ann\, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things — vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures\, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThe Historic Dogtown walking tour is almost three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. The terrain is up and down throughout\, over gentle hills. Hiking attire and closed footwear advised; walking poles are useful. Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions in the first decades of the 20th century. His paintings from this period capture the local landscape and architecture in a loosely rendered\, light–filled style and are considered by many to be some of his finest works. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you loop around downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street.
