The people of the town stood ready to take action against the British\, and many of them did. In this walking tour down Middle Street — one of Gloucester’s oldest streets – we will step back in time to meet people who were witness to Revolution right from this spot; see where they lived and gathered\, in houses still standing today; and hear the stories of the roles they played in defending liberty\, as patriots\, privateers\, preachers and more. This tour was developed in conjunction with the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you walk Middle Street in downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. Tripp Evans for an exploration of his latest book\, The Importance of Being Furnished: Four Bachelors at Home\, a portrait of four fascinating men who shaped American style from the Gilded to the Jazz Age yet whose lives have until now remained in shadow. \nPioneers in the fields of professional interior decoration and historic preservation\, they include Charles L. Pendleton (1846-1904)\, a reclusive gambler who built one of his era’s collections of eighteenth-century furniture; renowned interior decorator Ogden Codman\, Jr. (1863-1951)\, who inherited his ancestors’ vices along with their “Boston Brahmin” pedigree; writer Charles H. Gibson\, Jr. (1874-1954)\, who transformed his Back Bay home into a personal literary shrine and monument to his own beauty; and Henry Davis Sleeper (1878-1934)\, who created his Eastern Point masterpiece\, Beauport\, for the love of the man next door. The stories of these “surprisingly domestic bachelors” (as the press dubbed them) reveal the complicated depths beneath their homes’ brilliant surfaces\, as well as their connections to fellow bachelor-preservationists like Joseph Everett Chandler\, architect of Stevens-Coolidge House and Gardens.

DESCRIPTION:Babson Boulder Parking\nCherry Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nOn Cape Ann\, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things — vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures\, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThis walking tour is three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. Hiking attire and footwear advised; also\, walking poles if you use them. Bring water and insect repellent. The tour will start at the main entrance to Dogtown\, off Cherry Street. Meet at the parking lot a short distance up Dogtown Road\, on the right. There is parking for a few cars in the lot; otherwise\, park along the right side of the road\, after the parking lot\, or along Cherry St. Please arrive 10 minutes early. DESCRIPTION:Andy Volpe will print some of his Paul Revere replica copperplates\, including his latest 250th\ncommemorative print project: 3 Promissory Notes (paper money) that Revere secretly engraved & printed for the Massachusetts patriots in May 1775.\nHe plans on having some other prints\, plates\, tools and other visuals to discuss the work of Revere leading up to the American Revolution. \nThis event is funded in part by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) through the Massachusetts 250 Grant Program. This program supports the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution through programs that highlight historic themes of revolution and independence\, celebrate significant ‘firsts’ in Massachusetts and commemorate the state’s past 250 years.

SUMMARY:Rocky Neck Historic Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Rocky Neck Historic Walking Tour are back for the season! This public walking tour covers the rich history of Rocky Neck Art Colony\, showcasing the many artists who worked here\, especially from the late nineteenth century to today. Artists such as Edward Hopper\, Winslow Homer\, Augustus Buhler\, John Sloan\, Theresa Bernstein\, Stuart Davis\, and Emile Gruppe found artistic inspiration and community in this peninsula. \nJoin one of our docents on the tour and follow a path that held studios and gathering places of the artists\, interspersed with the fishing shacks\, sail lofts\, and schooner docks of the fishing industry that grew up here over the same period. It will include recognition of the many galleries that contribute to the Rocky Neck community today. The tour also describes the importance of transportation and the proliferation of hotels that encouraged the growth of Rocky Neck as an artist community\, as well as other notable historic events. \nRNAC’s Historic Walking Tours last from 1- to 1.5 hours and cover approximately .75 miles. Tours begin at the Rocky Neck Parking Lot and end at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center\, 6 Wonson Street\, Gloucester\, MA. \nParticipants are encouraged to park in the parking lot at the entrance to Rocky Neck where a volunteer tour guide meets the group. Comfortable shoes are encouraged. SUMMARY:CoastalExplorer: Shoreline & Shipwreck Scholars
DESCRIPTION:Coastal exploration with a side of shipwreck! Participants will be guided on a Castle Hill hike to Steep Hill Beach\, where we will explore the beach and discover treasures washed up by the waves. Piece together clues to learn what is living under the sand and below the water line. We will use field guides to identify shells\, egg cases\, seaweed and more to tell the story of what creatures inhabit the beach. We will also share the fascinating tale of the schooner Ada K Damon\, wrecked on Steep Hill Beach in 1909. Participants will have the chance to search for remnants of the shipwreck and make observations and measurements of what they find. \nThis program is part of the CoastalExplorers spring monthly series\, highlighting different habitats around our coast at The Crane Estate. Other programs in this series include Sand Dune Safari (Sunday\, 4/13) and Animals in the Estuary (Sunday\, 5/4). You can register for one\, or get a 15% discount if you register for all three. DESCRIPTION:Babson Boulder Parking\nCherry Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nOn Cape Ann\, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things — vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures\, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThis walking tour is three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. Hiking attire and footwear advised; also\, walking poles if you use them. Bring water and insect repellent. The tour will start at the main entrance to Dogtown\, off Cherry Street. Meet at the parking lot a short distance up Dogtown Road\, on the right. There is parking for a few cars in the lot; otherwise\, park along the right side of the road\, after the parking lot\, or along Cherry St. Please arrive 10 minutes early. SUMMARY:Rocky Neck Historic Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Rocky Neck Historic Walking Tour are back for the season! This public walking tour covers the rich history of Rocky Neck Art Colony\, showcasing the many artists who worked here\, especially from the late nineteenth century to today. Artists such as Edward Hopper\, Winslow Homer\, Augustus Buhler\, John Sloan\, Theresa Bernstein\, Stuart Davis\, and Emile Gruppe found artistic inspiration and community in this peninsula. \nJoin one of our docents on the tour and follow a path that held studios and gathering places of the artists\, interspersed with the fishing shacks\, sail lofts\, and schooner docks of the fishing industry that grew up here over the same period. It will include recognition of the many galleries that contribute to the Rocky Neck community today. The tour also describes the importance of transportation and the proliferation of hotels that encouraged the growth of Rocky Neck as an artist community\, as well as other notable historic events. \nRNAC’s Historic Walking Tours last from 1- to 1.5 hours and cover approximately .75 miles. Tours begin at the Rocky Neck Parking Lot and end at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center\, 6 Wonson Street\, Gloucester\, MA. \nParticipants are encouraged to park in the parking lot at the entrance to Rocky Neck where a volunteer tour guide meets the group. Comfortable shoes are encouraged. Be prepared to walk on uneven terrain and up a hill. \nThe 2025 public tours will be take place on Saturdays at 11am:\nMay 24\nJune 7 & 21\nJuly 12 & 26\nAugust 9 & 23\nSeptember 6 & 20 \nTours are limited to 15 people.\nCost: $10 for RNAC members or $25 for nonmembers. \nFor more information email director@rockyneckartcolony.org or call 978-515-7004. DESCRIPTION:Babson Boulder Parking\nCherry Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nOn Cape Ann\, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things — vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures\, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThis walking tour is three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. Hiking attire and footwear advised; also\, walking poles if you use them. Bring water and insect repellent. The tour will start at the main entrance to Dogtown\, off Cherry Street. Meet at the parking lot a short distance up Dogtown Road\, on the right. There is parking for a few cars in the lot; otherwise\, park along the right side of the road\, after the parking lot\, or along Cherry St. Please arrive 10 minutes early.
