Highlights of the tour include a room filled with stunning 19th century Chinese wallpaper\, the evolution of the stunning Sedgwick gardens\, and the hidden connection between the house and an old Southern antebellum mansion. \nPlease dress appropriately for the weather. Sturdy\, comfortable shoes are recommended. Meeting point for the tour is in front of the Main House by the copper beech tree. \nSpace is limited. \nLong Hill House & Garden Tours run most Saturdays and Sundays April through the end of September. SUMMARY:Walking Tour: Historic Dogtown
DESCRIPTION:Babson Boulder Parking\nCherry Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nOn Cape Ann\, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things — vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures\, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThis walking tour is three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. Hiking attire and footwear advised; also\, walking poles if you use them. Bring water and insect repellent. The tour will start at the main entrance to Dogtown\, off Cherry Street. Meet at the parking lot a short distance up Dogtown Road\, on the right. There is parking for a few cars in the lot; otherwise\, park along the right side of the road\, after the parking lot\, or along Cherry St. Please arrive 10 minutes early. Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions in the first decades of the 20th century. His paintings from this period capture the local landscape and architecture in a loosely rendered\, light–filled style and are considered by many to be some of his finest works. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you loop around downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. SUMMARY:Vox Populi – Towns of Massachusetts & the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:In the two and a half centuries since American Independence was declared and secured\, little attention has been spent looking into the roles of communities other than those who participated in significant events or were centers of population. Boston\, Lexington\, Concord\, & Bunker Hill play an outsized role in the public memory of the American Revolution. In this talk we will examine the hearts and minds of the people and communities across Massachusetts to understand why they would risk their lives\, liberties and fortunes for a new nation \nJonathan Lane is an historian with the Massachusetts Historical Society and the coordinator for Revolution 250\, an organization dedicated to commemorating the American Revolutionary War.

SUMMARY:Roads to Revolution Guided Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 19th for the Revolutionary History Tour Shuttle\, a special collaboration between the North Andover Historical Society and the Andover Center for History and Culture! \nEmbark on an adventure through our shared heritage as we bring our two towns\, once united during the American Revolution\, back together for a day of family-friendly learning and fun. \nLearn about historical sites in “old” North Andover that stood in 1775 and helped to shape our nation’s journey to independence\, including the Paul Revere bell and Steeple Tour at North Parish Church\, the First and Second Burial Grounds and mustering grounds at Kittredge Farm and Becky’s Pond. In ‘old’ Andover\, you will visit the site of the 1776 Gunpowder Mill and take the path taken by the Minute Men on “the road to Billerica” on April 19th\, 1775. \nOur experienced guides will share captivating stories and insights of our local connections to the revolution. As the bus passes more than 24 homes\, you will hear the engaging stories and anecdotes about the people who lived in them in the 1775 era\, many who were involved in the American Revolution. \nThe bus will stop twice for passengers to get off\, one in each town: \nAt the Timothy Johnson House in North Andover\, take a short tour of the historic kitchen and dining room and enjoy a glass of lemonade.\nAt the Blanchard Upton House in Andover\, take a short garden tour and enjoy a glass of cider.\nReserve your spot on one of two shuttles (11am and 1pm). Each tour takes approximately 1.5 hours. Please note there is limited seating of 40 seats on each shuttle bus.

Enjoy the rich history of this grand country estate\, home of the Sedgwick family\, as you learn about the elegant lifestyle of wealthy Bostonians on the North Shore\, and the artisans who created it. The tour takes you through the Federal-style house and the spectacular gardens\, with terraces\, statues\, fountains\, and pagodas\, each section filled with unique perennial flowers from around the world. Highlights of the tour include a room filled with stunning 19th century Chinese wallpaper\, the evolution of the stunning Sedgwick gardens\, and the hidden connection between the house and an old Southern antebellum mansion. \nPlease dress appropriately for the weather. Sturdy\, comfortable shoes are recommended. Meeting point for the tour is in front of the Main House by the copper beech tree. \nSpace is limited. \nLong Hill House & Garden Tours run most Saturdays and Sundays April through the end of September. SUMMARY:"The Osgoods" - 250 Years Ago they Started a Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Based on shared research about their families\, cousins Rich Pitra and Kathleen Osgood will bring their research to North Andover on the eve of the 250th anniversary of our town’s involvement in the early days of the American Revolution. From the “shot heard round the world” on April 19\, 1775 to September 3\, 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris\, the Osgoods fought in the revolution. Now\, 250 years later\, Katie and Rich will highlight the family who fought in the opening battles for American Independence\, including the Fryes and Osgoods from Andover\, the Osgoods and Prescotts from Lancaster\, and the Hales from Hollis\, New Hampshire. The presentation will follow their routes to Lexington and Concord\, and on to the Siege of Boston and the Battle of Bunker Hill.

DESCRIPTION:Cape Ann Museum Courtyard\, Downtown Campus\n27 Pleasant St\, Gloucester\, MA\, 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nExplore the area surrounding the Museum on this walk past select Gloucester houses made famous by American realist painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967). Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions in the first decades of the 20th century. His paintings from this period capture the local landscape and architecture in a loosely rendered\, light–filled style and are considered by many to be some of his finest works. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you loop around downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street.
