SUMMARY:Roads to Revolution Guided Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 19th for the Revolutionary History Tour Shuttle\, a special collaboration between the North Andover Historical Society and the Andover Center for History and Culture! \nEmbark on an adventure through our shared heritage as we bring our two towns\, once united during the American Revolution\, back together for a day of family-friendly learning and fun. \nLearn about historical sites in “old” North Andover that stood in 1775 and helped to shape our nation’s journey to independence\, including the Paul Revere bell and Steeple Tour at North Parish Church\, the First and Second Burial Grounds and mustering grounds at Kittredge Farm and Becky’s Pond. In ‘old’ Andover\, you will visit the site of the 1776 Gunpowder Mill and take the path taken by the Minute Men on “the road to Billerica” on April 19th\, 1775. \nOur experienced guides will share captivating stories and insights of our local connections to the revolution. As the bus passes more than 24 homes\, you will hear the engaging stories and anecdotes about the people who lived in them in the 1775 era\, many who were involved in the American Revolution. \nThe bus will stop twice for passengers to get off\, one in each town: \nAt the Timothy Johnson House in North Andover\, take a short tour of the historic kitchen and dining room and enjoy a glass of lemonade.\nAt the Blanchard Upton House in Andover\, take a short garden tour and enjoy a glass of cider.\nReserve your spot on one of two shuttles (11am and 1pm). Each tour takes approximately 1.5 hours. Please note there is limited seating of 40 seats on each shuttle bus.

DESCRIPTION:Visit Long Hill’s breathtaking gardens and stately historic house for a guided tour. Enjoy the rich history of this grand country estate\, home of the Sedgwick family\, as you learn about the elegant lifestyle of wealthy Bostonians on the North Shore\, and the artisans who created it. The tour takes you through the Federal-style house and the spectacular gardens\, with terraces\, statues\, fountains\, and pagodas\, each section filled with unique perennial flowers from around the world. Highlights of the tour include a room filled with stunning 19th century Chinese wallpaper\, the evolution of the stunning Sedgwick gardens\, and the hidden connection between the house and an old Southern antebellum mansion. \nPlease dress appropriately for the weather. Sturdy\, comfortable shoes are recommended. Meeting point for the tour is in front of the Main House by the copper beech tree. \nSpace is limited. \nLong Hill House & Garden Tours run most Saturdays and Sundays April through the end of September. SUMMARY:"The Osgoods" - 250 Years Ago they Started a Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Based on shared research about their families\, cousins Rich Pitra and Kathleen Osgood will bring their research to North Andover on the eve of the 250th anniversary of our town’s involvement in the early days of the American Revolution. From the “shot heard round the world” on April 19\, 1775 to September 3\, 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris\, the Osgoods fought in the revolution. Now\, 250 years later\, Katie and Rich will highlight the family who fought in the opening battles for American Independence\, including the Fryes and Osgoods from Andover\, the Osgoods and Prescotts from Lancaster\, and the Hales from Hollis\, New Hampshire. The presentation will follow their routes to Lexington and Concord\, and on to the Siege of Boston and the Battle of Bunker Hill.

Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions in the first decades of the 20th century. His paintings from this period capture the local landscape and architecture in a loosely rendered\, light–filled style and are considered by many to be some of his finest works. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you loop around downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. SUMMARY:Reconstructing the Voice of James Stevens\, a North Andover Revolutionary
DESCRIPTION:NAHS is honored to possess the handwritten diary of James Stevens. This treasure chronicles his time fighting for our country’s independence from the day he took up arms until the end of the war. Linguist and NAHS facilities manager\, Antoine Trombino-Ponte\, has poured over this diary and reconstructed the 1775 voice of James Stevens. His recordings will be available for all to hear in the Rev250 exhibit at the Stevens Center. Join us as he explains his process for reconstruction the voice.

Join us this April school vacation in North Andover to discover what is sprouting around you this Spring! \nParticipants will be emailed an activity bundle to help them look for clues along the trail and work as a team to discover the tiny world beneath their feet and under their nose. This is a self-guided program. Sturdy\, comfortable shoes are recommended. KIMBERLY ALEXANDER \nDr. Kimberly Alexander is Director of Museum Studies and Lecturer\, teaching museum studies\, material culture\, American history\, Architectural history\, and New Hampshire history in the History Department of the University of New Hampshire. She has held curatorial positions at several New England museums\, including the MIT Museum\, the Peabody Essex Museum and Strawbery Banke. DESCRIPTION:This high tide is royalty! Here’s your chance to see the king….tide that is. Join us for a hike to learn about extreme high tides\, known as king tides\, which are happening more often due to environmental change. These extreme tides have a variety of impacts on coastal infrastructure\, including restricted access on low lying roads\, flooded buildings\, and impacts of erosion\, debris\, and salt-water intrusion/damage. The king tide also provides us with a window to the future\, illustrating what an average high tide might look like in a few decades due to sea level rise. On this hike you will learn what causes king tides\, see the tidal impacts first-hand\, and learn what The Trustees are doing to increase the coastal resilience of our treasured coastal environments. \nPlease be prepared for a moderately strenuous 1-2 mile hike over gravel trails\, grass\, and soft sand\, with some elevation gain. \nProgram Refunds/Cancellations: In the event that a program is cancelled due to severe weather\, low enrollment\, or other circumstances\, we will notify you as soon as possible by email and issue you a full refund within 14 days of the cancellation. If you cannot attend a program as planned\, contact the Trustees property 7 days prior to the start of the program to receive a full refund or to be rebooked into a future available event. Refunds will not be granted for registration cancellations placed fewer than 7 days before the start of the program for any reason. There are no refunds for missed events or late arrivals. SUMMARY:Wood Type Use\, History\, and Identification with James Grieshaber
DESCRIPTION:Title: Wood Type Use\, History\, and Identification lecture and workshop\, 1 pm\nEvent leader: James Grieshaber\nCost: Free with Museum admission\nDate: Saturday March 15\nStart time: 1 pm \nThis lecture will cover aspects of wood type history\, as seen through the lens of the historic Wood Type Pattern Library of Virgin Wood Type. James Grieshaber\, who wrote The Virgin Wood Type Bible\, is a\nnoted type historian and type designer who will also speak to some of the uses of wood type printing historic broadsides. He will be in residence at the Museum of Printing for a week prior to the lecture helping identify and organize the museum’s wood type collection\, and will be presenting on what he’s found there. \nVirgin Wood Type produces twentieth-century wood fonts using original patterns from historic wood type manufacturers\, as well as developing revivals of Victorian-era wood type classics. They also issue new designs from contemporary type designers\, produced in the traditional manner\, using a vintage pantograph router\, originally owned by American Wood Type Mfg. Co. \nThe Virgin Wood Type Bible enables the reader to gain insight into the history of\, and be able to identify\, over 500 historic wood type designs. To accomplish this\, Grieshaber has located and researched all of the known printed catalogs from the makers\, as well as considered physical clues on the over 300 fonts represented in the Virgin Wood Type Pattern Library. These include patterns from American\, Acme\, Allied\, Empire\, and some from Stephenson\, Blake who had a US distribution agreement with American Wood Type. Also included are new fonts manufactured by Virgin Wood Type\, designed by the Grieshaber and others\, which often draw on historical models. \nJames Grieshaber has been a designer for newspaper and advertising agencies\, and a type designer for P22 Type Foundry\, Typeco\, and others. James is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology and has taught Typography at RIT. While working as a wood type designer and cutter for Virgin Wood Type\, Grieshaber cleaned\, cataloged\, and identified all the historic wood type patterns in their collection\, which led him to create this book. \nFunding by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) Massachusetts 250 Grant Program. Supporting the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution with projects that highlight historic themes of revolution and independence\, celebrate significant “firsts” in Massachusetts history\, or take a creative or innovative approach to commemorating the state’s past 250 years.

Join us this February school vacation for this self-guided winter themed family-friendly bundle for use along the Stevens-to-Stevens trail in North Andover to discover the magic within the Winter forest. \nParticipants will be emailed an activity bundle to help them look for clues along the trail and work as a team to discover the tiny world beneath their feet and under their nose. This is a self-guided program. Pre-registration required to receive downloadable bundle of winter themed created activities\, including maps\, scavenger hunt\, crafts\, additional reading list and recipes. \nThe special trail will run from February 16 to March 1. Please use your bundle on any day of your choosing. Please note: the Stevens-to-Stevens trail is less traveled than our major trails and snow drifts may occur.
