DESCRIPTION:Witchcraft and folklore traditions are rich and diverse cultural practices that have spanned centuries. These traditions are deeply rooted in local folklore\, with each region having its own unique beliefs and practices\, including New England. Throughout history\, witches have been both revered as wise healers and feared as malevolent sorcerers. In this workshop\, we’ll focus on one tradition used as a form of protection from those malevolent\, unseen forces\, with a concentration on New England.  At the end of the workshop\, everyone will craft a Witch Bottle using antique bottles to take home. DESCRIPTION:The Patton Family in New England Tour chronicles the life and legacy of one of America’s premier military families who resided here on Boston’s North Shore. On the tour\, you will see four rooms within the Patton Homestead that are filled with military memorabilia\, family heirlooms\, photography\, books\, and papers that comprise a collection known as the Patton Family Archives. These Archives are also an untapped\, unparalleled resource regarding the service and sacrifice of Maj. Gen. Patton and his troops during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and that of his wife\, Joanne Holbrook Patton\, on the home front. \nGuided tours are offered at select dates and times and are available only by advanced online reservation through the Wenham Museum. Tours are approximately one hour in length and include time for questions. Payment is required at the time of booking. \nFALL TOUR DATES\nSaturday\, September 28\, 2024 at 1:00 p.m.\nSaturday\, October 19\, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. \nTours are $15.00 for members of the Wenham Museum and $20.00 for nonmembers. Active Military and Veteran tour tickets are $10.00. Tour tickets also and include General Admission to the museum’s main location at 132 Main Street\, Wenham\, Massachusetts. \nGroups\nGroup tours are available for parties of 6 or more on a mutually agreeable date at time. The reduction of traditional fish stocks and resulting strict state regulations on fishermen has led to social\, cultural and economic challenges never before experienced by the oldest fishing port in America. Beginning in 1606\, when Samuel de Champlain named Gloucester Harbor “Le Beauport”\, Gloucester\, through the voices of its citizens\, speaks to the enormity of our reliance on one of the world’s greatest fisheries\, revealing the towering achievements and innovations\, along with the slow but sure depletion of the fishery through advances in technology and the pressure of demand\, along with the effects of pollution and global warming. In this documentary\, covering the eight years leading up to 2023\, as well as the 400 years preceding it\, the citizens tell the story of a great American City’s unique struggle to remain true to Le Beauport.

This year we hope to raise funds to restore and improve our Kitchen Garden.\nAdmission fees and donations from our annual summer fundraiser go towards the preservation of the Nurse Homestead. As an independent 501c(3) non-profit we rely almost entirely on donations and admission fees to preserve this unique historic site.

DESCRIPTION:Nicknamed the “Intolerable Acts” by New Englanders\, the passage of these punitive laws pushed Massachusetts\, to the brink of war. \nIn December 1773\, a mob of Boston residents stormed three merchant ships moored at Griffin’s Wharf and quickly destroyed the chests of East India Company tea located onboard. Three months later\, in response to the Boston Tea Party\, Parliament passed a series of laws known as the Boston Port Bill. These legislative acts essentially stripped Massachusetts colonists of their constitutional\, economic\, and political rights. \nNicknamed the “Intolerable Acts” by New Englanders\, the passage of these punitive laws pushed Massachusetts\, including the colonists of Essex County\, to the brink of war.\nJoin Historian Alexander Cain as he explores Essex County’s political and constitutional responses to the Intolerable Acts and the steps the colonists of the county took to prepare for war with England after reconciliation became impossible. \nMeredith Farm is a privately owned\, 188 acre farm in Topsfield\, which has been recently renovated. Its 1793 Barn houses an extensive private collection of artifacts related to American history. \nThis program is part of Essex County Revolution 250.Essex County Revolution 250 is an initiative of Essex Heritage in partnership with Massachusetts Rev250 and dozens of regional museums\, heritage sites\, and organizations\, with the intention of raising awareness and highlighting the diverse stories of Essex County\, Massachusetts residents\, free and unfree\, during the American Revolutionary period. The play is the story of six of these children and chronicles two days of their lives at the Terezin concentration camp before being deported to Auschwitz. The drama takes place during the International Red Cross inspection of the Terezin concentration camp on June 23\, 1944. Each of the six characters signifies one of the six million Jews who perished during the Holocaust. \nWhile the play suggests the grim reality of what lies ahead for the children of the camp\, it is also a portrait of the unabashed ability of hope that lies in the heart of a child\, and the triumph of spirit many were able to achieve through their relationships and their artwork. The play is an impassioned work remembering the more than one million children whose lives would so horrifically be stolen by the Nazis.

SUMMARY:Colonial Craft Fair at Jeremiah Lee Mansion
DESCRIPTION:The Marblehead Museum will be holding its 1st Annual Colonial Craft Fair on Saturday\, April 20 from 10am-4pm.  Visitors can stroll through the beautiful gardens of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion\, and meet skilled artisans and historic reenactors as they demonstrate crafts from 300 years ago. \nVisitors can learn how shoes were made from a Master Shoemaker\, try their hand at copperplate printing\, watch a cook prepare colonial dishes\, and more.  Tickets for museum members are $10 per person or $25 per family\, and tickets for the public are $15 per person or $40 per family.  Children aged 3 and under are free.  All tickets can be purchased at the door.

DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Caldwell’s Newburyport Rum was produced along the waterfront for 171 years (with a short break during Prohibition)? The rum business boomed in Newbury(port) in the 18th century\, with ships arriving from the West Indies with cargoes of molasses to be distilled into potent\, inexpensive New England rum. \nAnd we drank almost as much as we made – about three pints of rum per adult male per week in the 1770’s\, and British attempts to regulate and tax this beverage helped to stoke the flames of revolution! \nJoin executive director Bethany Dorau for an illustrated talk and tasting on the history of rum in 18th century Newbury(port). Learn the language of punch bowls and check out the bar tab from Newburyport’s Wolfe Tavern on the eve of Revolution. Learn how the production and distribution of rum changed over time\, and how westward expansion signalled the end of the rule of rum. Explore attempts to outlaw “demon rum\,” long before Prohibition\, and head home with recipes for rum cocktails from some of the area’s best bartenders!
