Learn about these women and the grit it takes to thrive as a woman in the male-dominated farm world. Get outside and moving on a winter day\, exploring the dormant crop fields\, forest trails\, and sweeping pastures of Appleton. \nAccessibility: This hike has a moderate level of difficulty on gently hilly terrain\, expect it to last approximately 2.5 hours. Be sure to wear weather appropriate clothing and boots or shoes that are appropriate for hiking in potentially wet and muddy spots or over uneven terrain\, or in light precipitation. We recommend you bring your own water bottle. Single use plastics are not permitted on site.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Canadian perspective on the Arnold Expedition and the last siege of Québec in 1775-1776. \nDuring the first months of the War of Independence\, the Continental Army set its sights on the Province of Quebec. This British colony\, born from the ashes of New France\, is equally a threat and an opportunity for the Thirteen Colonies. How did the Canadian population reacted to the invasion of their territory and how did this first major campaign unfolded? Focusing on the events surrounding Québec City\, Discover the efforts to capture it\, from Benedict Arnold’s fateful expedition in the wilderness\, to the siege of the city in 1775\, the Battle of Québec (Dec. 31\, 1775)\, and the departure of the Continental Army in May 1776. \nA historian and historical interpretation coordinator for the Canadian National Battlefields Commission since 2007\, Luc Nicole-Labrie has an academic background in history\, tourism\, and culture. SUMMARY:Newburyport's Road to Independence\, Part I: The Long\, Dark Winter of 1776
DESCRIPTION:Historian Alexander Cain returns to Newburyport to explore one of the most tense and transformative moments in American history in this engaging lecture on Massachusetts and Newburyport in early 1776. As the Siege of Boston drags through a bitter winter\, he will discuss civilian suffering inside the town\, the controversial use of smallpox in efforts to break the stalemate\, and the evolving roles of the militia and the Continental Army. He then turns to Newburyport’s own story: the growing rumblings of independence\, the dangerous position of Loyalists\, and the unleashing of the town’s most potent weapon in support of the American cause: its “wolfpack” fleet of privateers\, which struck at the heart of British supply lines and reshaped Newburyport’s economy and identity on land and at sea. \nAlex has authored numerous research articles and presentations on the American Revolution\, including the Battles of Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill\, the Siege of Boston\,Massachusetts privateers and the experiences of New England and New York loyalist refugees during the Burgoyne Campaign. In addition\, he has published two books: We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution and I See Nothing but the Horrors of a Civil War: The Loyalists of McAlpin’s Corps of American Volunteers. He is also the creator of the blog and podcast Historical Nerdery (historicalnerdery.com). Wander through rooms adorned with White Birch and Christmas trees\, sparkling fairy lights\, hydrangea-lace garlands\, and elegant bows\, each space transformed with its own unique holiday theme. From nature’s bounty of fruits and greenery to the warm glow of candlelight\, every detail creates a true feast for the senses. Along the way\, you will encounter a royal guard of nutcrackers standing watch over a gingerbread house replica of the castle. Keep an eye out for playful elves and gnomes who are up to mischief—great fun for little ones! This year\, the celebration will also shine with the glow of two menorahs on display\, honoring the traditions of Hanukkah within the Museum’s holiday splendor. \nFor the first time\, we are pleased to feature design elements created in partnership with Elaine Quinn Interiors\, a boutique residential interior design firm based in Manchester-by-the-Sea\, MA\, bringing fresh inspiration and artistry to this year’s holiday presentation. \nIn addition to the holiday installation\, guests will also have the opportunity to experience the Hammond in Italy temporary exhibition\, which highlights John Hays Hammond Jr.’s time abroad and the profound influence Italian art and architecture had on his vision for the castle. \nFor an even more enchanting experience\, join us for Deck the Halls by Candlelight on Thursday evenings throughout December. These extended-hour tours invite guests to explore the Museum after dark\, when the holiday décor glows with flickering candlelight and twinkling lights\, creating a truly magical atmosphere. \nGuests should plan for approximately 60 minutes in total to take in the full holiday grandeur.
