DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday evening in December. Tours run at 6\, 7\, & 8pm. \nJoin us for our 6th annual Deck The Halls holiday celebration. Hammond Castle Museum will be dressed for the holidays inside and out. \nBegin your evening as you come upon our holiday illumination where holiday lights set the Castle and our iconic arches aglow. Then\, enter the Museum and delight in the enchanting ambiance of White Birch and Christmas trees\, meticulously arranged garlands\, festive wreaths\, and the warm embrace of candlelight that will envelop you throughout your tour of the Hammond Castle Museum. Immerse yourself in a bygone era of opulent tranquility and holiday grandeur that promises to be unlike any other experience on the North Shore. \nFollowing the advice of his mentor Alexander Graham Bell\, John Hays Hammond Jr. conducted the majority of his work in the evening. While this put Hammond at odds with the rest of the inhabitants of the castle – including his wife Irene – he concluded that working throughout the night and sleeping during the day positively impacted his work as an inventor. With this in mind\, “Candlelight tours” are offered on Thursday evenings throughout December. Guides will escort visitors through the Museum’s many rooms placing an emphasis on the Hammonds themselves and the time that they spent in their castle home. Electronic candles will be provided for optional use during the Candlelight Tours.

SUMMARY:Hidden Histories: Black History Month Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate Black History Month with “Quietly Hidden: A Story of Architectural Salvage and Discovered Craftsmanship\,” a lecture that honors and educates the achievements\, resilience and creativity of Black artisans. Senior Curator\, Christie Jackson will present her research on Long Hill\, with a story of early preservation\, the untold story of enslaved artisans\, and one family’s passion for history all combine. Her groundbreaking research uncovers Long Hill’s enriching history of the Federal-era ornamental carvings salvaged from Charleston\, SC and used in the Sedgwick’s 1921 house that was created in part by highly skilled enslaved craftsmen. \nLong Hill was the Beverly summer home of Atlantic Monthly editor Ellery Sedgwick and his family from 1916 until it was bequeathed to The Trustees in 1979. This lecture will take place inside the the historic home where participants will then join Christie as she gives a tour of the first floor of Long Hill to highlight the architectural elements included in her presentation. DESCRIPTION:Originally born in Germany and transplanted to the US as a young teen\, Antje Duvekot began to hone her observational skills through a lens of biculturalism when she picked up a guitar during that move. Some years later\, the confessional folk of Dar Williams and Ani DiFranco gave her license to share her observations\, no matter how personal\, in her first emerging songs. She has never let go of that tenet of vulnerability. “Duvekot has gotten hotter\, faster than any local songwriter in recent memory. Her songs feel at once fresh faced and firmly rooted\, driven by the whispery sensuality of her voice. She believes in the redemptive power of the shared secret; and is utterly unafraid to mine the darkest corners of her life for songs that turn fear into resilience and isolation into community.” The Boston Globe \nConsidered by many to be an integral part of the national folk scene – and one of the originators of the finally recognized R&B/Folk/Jazz crossover-sub-genre – this Boston-based stalwart was born and raised in\nthe Philadelphia area. In 1992\, Shawn Colvin invited him to be special guest on her Fat City tour. “With the voice of an angel\, the wit of a devil\, and the guitar playing of a god…”\, swooned The Fort Worth Star Telegram about one of those shows. Vance’s newest album\, “The Mother Of Trouble”\, features Grammy winner Lori McKenna on background vocals\, Juno award recipient and Bonnie Raitt Grammy hit song co-writer Joey Landreth on guitars\, and master mandolinist Joe K. Walsh\, among others. Gilbert has recorded 14 albums to date\, including 5 for Philo/Rounder Records. He’s been the opener of choice for artists as varied as Arlo Guthrie\, Anita Baker\, The Milk Carton Kids\, and Southside Johnny\, and the mid 2000s found Gilbert opening 150+ shows for comic legend George Carlin! He’s currently the regular opener for Mad About You/Stranger Things star Paul Reiser’s stand-up shows\, and he maintains his own busy acoustic music touring schedule.

SUMMARY:CraneExplorer: Arbor Day Forest Fun
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Arbor Day with a frolic through the forest on this all-ages education program which explores the biological need for habitat & shelter in an educational and experiential setting. Participants will discuss examples of shelters and dwellings\, why and how living things build shelters\, and share gratitude with the earth for providing the materials for these shelters. After brainstorming some building strategies & designs\, we will get active outside with a nature walk and then practice building shelters & fairy houses out of natural materials in the Pine Grove at Castle Hill. This program is a great way for young learners to spend time outdoors exploring creativity & gratitude for nature. \nCraneExplorer events are family-friendly programs welcoming learners of all ages. Hikes cover less ground to accommodate smaller strides and have more frequent stops to look\, listen\, and learn from our CraneExplorer guides. Interactive education programs include hands-on activities to engage our curiosity. CraneExplorer Programs are best suited for ages 5+. \nPlease be aware that we may walk for up to two hours and cover approximately 1-2 miles. As such\, adult discretion on your child’s ability to manage this activity is advised.

This program will start with a beach walk to collect coastal treasures\, and then we will head inside for crafting. Materials and inspiration provided. \nYou have the option to skip the beach walk – the crafting portion of the program is ADA-accessible. \nCraneExplorer events are family-friendly educational programs and hikes for all ages. Not just a walk in the woods\, these family-friendly experiences teach kids and delight adults by exploring the wonder of our coastal habitats and the rich history of the Crane Estate.
