DESCRIPTION:Originally born in Germany and transplanted to the US as a young teen\, Antje Duvekot began to hone her observational skills through a lens of biculturalism when she picked up a guitar during that move. Some years later\, the confessional folk of Dar Williams and Ani DiFranco gave her license to share her observations\, no matter how personal\, in her first emerging songs. She has never let go of that tenet of vulnerability. “Duvekot has gotten hotter\, faster than any local songwriter in recent memory. Her songs feel at once fresh faced and firmly rooted\, driven by the whispery sensuality of her voice. She believes in the redemptive power of the shared secret; and is utterly unafraid to mine the darkest corners of her life for songs that turn fear into resilience and isolation into community.” The Boston Globe \nConsidered by many to be an integral part of the national folk scene – and one of the originators of the finally recognized R&B/Folk/Jazz crossover-sub-genre – this Boston-based stalwart was born and raised in\nthe Philadelphia area. In 1992\, Shawn Colvin invited him to be special guest on her Fat City tour. “With the voice of an angel\, the wit of a devil\, and the guitar playing of a god…”\, swooned The Fort Worth Star Telegram about one of those shows. Vance’s newest album\, “The Mother Of Trouble”\, features Grammy winner Lori McKenna on background vocals\, Juno award recipient and Bonnie Raitt Grammy hit song co-writer Joey Landreth on guitars\, and master mandolinist Joe K. Walsh\, among others. Gilbert has recorded 14 albums to date\, including 5 for Philo/Rounder Records. He’s been the opener of choice for artists as varied as Arlo Guthrie\, Anita Baker\, The Milk Carton Kids\, and Southside Johnny\, and the mid 2000s found Gilbert opening 150+ shows for comic legend George Carlin! He’s currently the regular opener for Mad About You/Stranger Things star Paul Reiser’s stand-up shows\, and he maintains his own busy acoustic music touring schedule.

After brainstorming some building strategies & designs\, we will get active outside with a nature walk and then practice building shelters & fairy houses out of natural materials in the Pine Grove at Castle Hill. This program is a great way for young learners to spend time outdoors exploring creativity & gratitude for nature. \nCraneExplorer events are family-friendly programs welcoming learners of all ages. Following the reading\, educator\, Project Scholar for the Freeman Family Project\, and Gloucester Juneteenth founder Toni Waldron will lead breakout groups for community members to discuss the speech and their experience reading it. Kyrouz Auditorium\, Gloucester City Hall \n10:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Interactive program in the City Hall parking lot guided by Toni Waldron on the history of the Freeman family\, a prominent Black family living in Gloucester in the 18th and 19th centuries. Set against the backdrop of the Atlantic at the historic Hammond Castle Museum\, this outdoor performance features a rich blend of The Firebird Pops strings and brass\, led by conductor Brendan J. Kenney. \nThe program includes a special appearance by Elke Jahns-Harms\, making her Firebird debut on Native American flutes. Returning vocalists Fred C. VanNess\, Jr.\, and Mara Bonde join us once again to bring powerful and poignant selections to life. \nEnjoy this celebration of heritage\, unity\, and freedom\, right by the sea.\nPlease note: There are no assigned seats.\nLight refreshments will be available for purchase. In the event of inclement weather\, this performance will occur in the Great Hall. \n*This ticket grants you access to the Firebird Pops Orchestra performance\, which will be held outside on the ocean-facing lawn\, as well as access to the Museum Shop. Newburyport’s Yankee Homecoming is the longest continuously running festival that remains. \nThis year’s theme\, Tides of Time: Preserving the Past\, Charting the Future\, was inspired by the origins of Yankee Homecoming\, which began 66 years ago\, and the rich heritage of Newburyport that we celebrate each year. It also reflects the ongoing spirit of growth and change that this community has embraced.
