DESCRIPTION:The Salem Athenaeum is pleased to announce the 2025 Salem Literary Festival (aka the Salem Lit Fest). Taking place September 3–7\, 2025 across the city of Salem\, Massachusetts with a special online appearance by Lev Grossman\, the festival celebrates a love of reading and writing. \nThe Salem Literary Festival aims to inspire and promote literacy and a love of books and reading by creating connections through sharing stories. Held over one weekend each fall\, the Salem Literary Festival hosts readings\, writing workshops\, panel discussions\, and artistic expression in music\, theater\, dance\, etc. \nLit Fest primarily features local and regional authors of recently published work\, some of whom have an international audience. Held in historic venues in and around Salem\, Lit Fest unites published authors and book lovers\, and encourages aspiring writers.

SUMMARY:Coffee & Conversations at the Carlson Education Center: What is a Schooner?
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 4\, 2025\n10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.\nCarlson Education Center\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA\nCAM Members Free\, Non-Members $5\nRegistration required as space is limited \nUp to the early 20th century\, schooners were the workhorses of the Gloucester fisheries under sail. But visitors to the Cape Ann Museum have often asked\, “What exactly is a Schooner?” This presentation will provide an easy-to-remember definition of a schooner and will show its evolution from a small inshore fishing boat to an extreme racing type. Ship models from the Museum’s collection and photos will illustrate the presentation. \nYou are invited to join us every Thursday for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Education Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed.
