DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 19\, 2025\n10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nCape Ann Museum Courtyard\, Downtown Campus\n27 Pleasant St\, Gloucester\, MA\, 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nAs a seaport town jutting into the Atlantic\, Gloucester was of strategic importance during the American Revolution and always under threat of attack. The people of the town stood ready to take action against the British\, and many of them did. In this walking tour down Middle Street — one of Gloucester’s oldest streets – we will step back in time to meet people who were witness to Revolution right from this spot; see where they lived and gathered\, in houses still standing today; and hear the stories of the roles they played in defending liberty\, as patriots\, privateers\, preachers and more. This tour was developed in conjunction with the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you walk Middle Street in downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. DESCRIPTION:Newburyport’s Road to Revolution Presents: Through a Howling Wilderness: Benedict Arnold’s March to Quebec\, 1775 \n📅 Friday\, September 19\, 2025 – 7:00 p.m.📍 St. Paul’s Episcopal Church\, Newburyport\, MA \nExactly 250 years to the day after Benedict Arnold led his troops out of Newburyport\, join us for a captivating lecture by historian and author Tom Desjardin on one of the most extraordinary—yet often overlooked—episodes of the American Revolution. \nIn September 1775\, Arnold commanded eleven hundred Colonial soldiers on a daring\, top-secret mission: to march and paddle nearly 200 miles through the untamed wilderness of Maine and Quebec to seize British-held Quebec City. It was a journey marked by hypothermia\, disease\, starvation\, hurricanes\, and blizzards. Dozens perished; survivors endured eating everything from dogs to lip salve before reaching their target. Though the attack ultimately failed\, Arnold’s expedition helped pave the way for America’s eventual victory. \nIn Through a Howling Wilderness\, Desjardin tells this gripping story of endurance\, sacrifice\, and leadership before Arnold’s name became synonymous with treason. \nAbout the Speaker:Tom Desjardin holds a Ph.D. in U.S. History and is the author of multiple acclaimed books. A former archivist and historian at Gettysburg National Military Park\, he has taught at Bowdoin College\, advised film and television productions (including Gettysburg and Gods and Generals)\, and appeared on the History Channel\, A&E\, Discovery\, PBS\, and CSPAN. SUMMARY:Beyond Salem: The History and Legacy of the European Witch Trials
DESCRIPTION:Most New Englanders are very familiar with the outbreak of the witch craze in 17th century Salem\, Massachusetts depicted in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible\, but many have never heard of the Burning Times\, a period of roughly 150 years in Europe during which tens of thousands of victims\, mostly women and girls\, were tortured and executed for the imaginary crime of witchcraft. \nMarblehead Little Theatre and UUCGL invite you to join scholar and minister Victoria Weinstein for a lecture and conversation about the religious\, political and social context and outcomes of this terrible chapter in history. Trudi Olivetti\, the director of MLT’s October production of “The Crucible\,” will offer remarks. \nThe presentation will be in-person and livestreamed on Zoom.
