SUMMARY:Falconry & the Medieval World: A Live Bird Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Wingmasters’ Birds of Prey returns to the Hammond Castle Museum! \nFalconry is the sport of hunting with a trained bird of prey. It is also the demanding art of training a predatory bird that is by nature wary of people to hunt cooperatively with a human partner. While the sport has a 4\,000-year history\, its glory days were indisputably in the medieval period. While this presentation centers around live birds used in falconry\, it is not a flight demonstration but a history-rich look at an ancient sport. Focusing on the medieval period\, it explains the characteristics of the birds of prey used\, how the sport reflected the lifestyle of the time\, and the historical reasons behind falconry’s rise and fall. \nPlease note: This program is only intended for ages 8 and up. Tickets for this event are $20 adults\, $10 kids. This ticket grants you access to the Falconry & the Medieval World: A Live Bird Presentation\, which will be held in a tent on the ocean-facing lawn\, as well as access to the Museum Shop. A separate tour ticket will be required to enter beyond the Museum Shop for a guided or self-guided tour. Ticket holders may purchase Self-Guided Tour tickets in the Museum Shop at a 20% discount. \nAbout WINGMASTERS:\nJulie Anne Collier and Jim Parks are both licensed wildlife rehabilitators based in Massachusetts and are dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of North American birds of prey. Together they care for injured birds of prey at their private center in Leverett\, Massachusetts. Most of the birds they rehabilitate can ultimately be released back into the wild\, but in some cases\, the birds are left permanently handicapped. Julie and Jim are further licensed to provide a home for these non-releasable raptors and to use them for educational programs. Since 1994\, WINGMASTERS has presented over 10\,000 programs at schools\, libraries\, and museums throughout New England. \nAll proceeds from this educational program support additional educational programs and ongoing Museum restorations. DESCRIPTION:Join Historic New England and the Whittier Home Association for a special two-part tour exploring the lives and legacies of abolitionists Joshua Coffin and John Greenleaf Whittier. Participants will tour the Coffin House in Newbury\, a Historic New England property and the home of teacher and abolitionist Joshua Coffin and the John Greenleaf Whittier Home in Amesbury. At the Coffin House\, visitors will tour Coffin’s study and home\, view his gravesite\, and learn about his leadership in the abolitionist movement and his influence as Whittier’s teacher. At the Whittier Home\, participants will explore Whittier’s life as a writer\, reformer\, and prominent voice for the anti-slavery cause.\nMember $20\nNonmember $25\nOne group will tour the Coffin House while the other tours the John Greenleaf Whittier Home. Groups will break for lunch\, then switch locations in the afternoon to experience the other site. The first tour is 10 a.m.–11:00 a.m. and the second is 1 p.m.–2 p.m.You will be notified of your group via email before the program.\nAdvance registration required. Registration will close on Thursday\, July 23.\nPlease call (617) 994-5955 for more information.\nAccessibility Considerations: Tour involves standing\, walking\, and stairs. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Presentation and Exhibition Preview celebrating the opening of our two new Spring and Summer temporary exhibitions: Inside the Faraday Cage: The Science of Things That Aren’t So and a mini-exhibit A Tale of Two Pianos. \nThis exclusive preview offers guests early access to both exhibitions\, along with curator-led presentations that provide insight into the ideas\, individuals\, and historical context behind the work. \nEvening program:\n5:30 pm–6:00 pm Networking\n6:00 pm–6:45 pm Presentations\n6:50 pm–7:30 pm Tours of the Exhibit\nLight refreshments will be served. \nCuratorial Director John Leysath will present an in-depth exploration of Hammond’s 1951 Faraday cage experiments\, conducted in collaboration with physician and parapsychologist Andrija Puharich and renowned psychic medium Eileen Garrett. His talk examines the broader landscape of mid-20th-century psychic research\, the tension between belief and skepticism\, and the importance of scientific rigor in the study of paranormal phenomena. The presentation also considers the wider influence of this research\, including its connections to government-funded investigations. \nThe exhibition Inside the Faraday Cage features a life-size\, non-working replica of the experimental apparatus\, offering visitors a rare opportunity to step inside and engage with the physical environment of Hammond’s investigations. \nAssistant Curator Donovan Lafontaine will introduce A Tale of Two Pianos\, a focused installation exploring the history behind Hammond’s three major musical inventions. The ‘Pirafon’ piano\, a combination radio\, phonograph\, and piano instrument\, and the ‘Tonal Pedal’ piano\, a system of organ swell-like\, movable shutters for piano instruments. The mini-exhibit will also feature an interactive model of the ‘Tonal Pedal’ system\, for viewers to better understand its features. \nAdvance reservations are required. The USS Hancock was built in Newburyport in 1776\, and all three families were linked by ties of blood and friendship to this community. Join Nina Sankovitch\, author of American Rebels: How the Hancock\, Adams\, and Quincy Families Fanned the Flames of Revolution to explore the the efforts of these leading New England families to foment support for the American Revolution in the decade leading up to the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence. \nThe fight for independence never would have succeeded if New Englanders\, across class lines and from all backgrounds\, had not joined the fight. John Hancock\, John Adams\, Abigail Adams\, and Josiah Quincy were instrumental in bringing together disparate groups and igniting a shared ambition for liberty from English oppression. Using words (in speeches and letters) and actions (court cases\, acts of civil disobedience\, espionage\, community outreach)\, they rallied colonists to betray their King and Parliament as a necessary and God-ordained duty to themselves\, their neighbors\, and their country. With the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, the shared fight became a covenant\, and the rights of life\, liberty\, and pursuit of happiness\, the promise of independence. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Canadian perspective on the Arnold Expedition and the last siege of Québec in 1775-1776. \nDuring the first months of the War of Independence\, the Continental Army set its sights on the Province of Quebec. This British colony\, born from the ashes of New France\, is equally a threat and an opportunity for the Thirteen Colonies. How did the Canadian population reacted to the invasion of their territory and how did this first major campaign unfolded? Focusing on the events surrounding Québec City\, Discover the efforts to capture it\, from Benedict Arnold’s fateful expedition in the wilderness\, to the siege of the city in 1775\, the Battle of Québec (Dec. 31\, 1775)\, and the departure of the Continental Army in May 1776. \nA historian and historical interpretation coordinator for the Canadian National Battlefields Commission since 2007\, Luc Nicole-Labrie has an academic background in history\, tourism\, and culture. SUMMARY:Newburyport's Road to Independence\, Part I: The Long\, Dark Winter of 1776
DESCRIPTION:Historian Alexander Cain returns to Newburyport to explore one of the most tense and transformative moments in American history in this engaging lecture on Massachusetts and Newburyport in early 1776. As the Siege of Boston drags through a bitter winter\, he will discuss civilian suffering inside the town\, the controversial use of smallpox in efforts to break the stalemate\, and the evolving roles of the militia and the Continental Army. He then turns to Newburyport’s own story: the growing rumblings of independence\, the dangerous position of Loyalists\, and the unleashing of the town’s most potent weapon in support of the American cause: its “wolfpack” fleet of privateers\, which struck at the heart of British supply lines and reshaped Newburyport’s economy and identity on land and at sea. \nAlex has authored numerous research articles and presentations on the American Revolution\, including the Battles of Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill\, the Siege of Boston\,Massachusetts privateers and the experiences of New England and New York loyalist refugees during the Burgoyne Campaign. In addition\, he has published two books: We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution and I See Nothing but the Horrors of a Civil War: The Loyalists of McAlpin’s Corps of American Volunteers. He is also the creator of the blog and podcast Historical Nerdery (historicalnerdery.com). Currently\, he is in the process of writing his next book\, “For God’s Sake\, Fire!” – The Massachusetts Militia System on the Eve of the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, which is anticipated to be released in 2027.\nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism

DESCRIPTION:Birds need sleep as much as we do\, and they have evolved some unique habits to match their intensely energetic lifestyles. Ornithologist and author Roger Pasquier discusses the evolution and benefits of avian sleep\, including recent discoveries that some long-distance flyers can even sleep while in flight! Other birds sleep in short bouts of several seconds or a few minutes\, then wake up to look around for danger before going back to sleep. Human impacts like artificial light\, noise and climate change are changing how and where birds can get a good night’s rest. \nA book signing for Birds at Rest: The Behavior and Ecology of Avian Sleep (2025) follows the program. \nThis program is cohosted by the Essex County Ornithological Club and made possible by a gift from The Essex Charitable Foundation.
