SUMMARY:Trumpeters of Sedition: How the Printing Press created a Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Gary Gregory\, proprietor of the Printing Office of Edes & Gill\, will talk about the role of the printing press in the American Revolution. Printed pamphlets\, broadsides\, and newspapers energized the revolution\, and it was the printing press that produced the Declaration of Independence. Gary will use his replica of an English Common Press\, a wooden hand-press that now resides at the Museum of Printing\, to demonstrate the technology in use at the time of the American Revolution. \nThis event is funded in part by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) through the Massachusetts 250 Grant Program. This program supports the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution through programs that highlight historic themes of revolution and independence\, celebrate significant ‘firsts’ in Massachusetts and commemorate the state’s past 250 years.

Following the reading\, educator\, Project Scholar for the Freeman Family Project\, and Gloucester Juneteenth founder Toni Waldron will lead breakout groups for community members to discuss the speech and their experience reading it. Kyrouz Auditorium\, Gloucester City Hall \n10:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Interactive program in the City Hall parking lot guided by Toni Waldron on the history of the Freeman family\, a prominent Black family living in Gloucester in the 18th and 19th centuries. A table organized and staffed by the Bookstore of Gloucester and Dogtown Books will distribute books that center diverse voices\, including those written by BIPOC authors\, to visitors thanks to the generosity of Action\, Inc. Pendleton (1846-1904)\, a reclusive gambler who built one of his era’s collections of eighteenth-century furniture; renowned interior decorator Ogden Codman\, Jr. (1863-1951)\, who inherited his ancestors’ vices along with their “Boston Brahmin” pedigree; writer Charles H. Gibson\, Jr. (1874-1954)\, who transformed his Back Bay home into a personal literary shrine and monument to his own beauty; and Henry Davis Sleeper (1878-1934)\, who created his Eastern Point masterpiece\, Beauport\, for the love of the man next door. The stories of these “surprisingly domestic bachelors” (as the press dubbed them) reveal the complicated depths beneath their homes’ brilliant surfaces\, as well as their connections to fellow bachelor-preservationists like Joseph Everett Chandler\, architect of Stevens-Coolidge House and Gardens.

At this Gallery Talk\, Greg Bover will discuss the collaborative process along with the history of C. B. Fisk. \nGreg Bover retired from C.B. Fisk\, Inc. in 2020 after 42 years as Project Manager\, designer\, and Vice President for Operations. He supervised the design and construction of more than thirty Fisk instruments in churches\, concert halls\, and academic institutions across the United States and around the world\, including The Memorial Church at Harvard\, the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas\, organs at Kobe and Yokohama\, and the firm’s magnum opus at the Cathedral in Lausanne\, Switzerland. \nGreg lives in Rockport with his wife Maureen Aylward. Long active in community building\, he is a Past President of the Sawyer Free Library and the Gloucester Rotary Club. He continues to serve on the Government Affairs Council of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce\, is a Trustee of the Awesome Gloucester micro-grant foundation and is a Corporator of the Cape Ann Savings Bank. Honors include a Restoration Award from the Gloucester Historical Commission\, and citizenship awards from the Rotary Club\, Unitarian Universalist Church\, and the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce. An avid sailor and woodworker\, he is board president\, crew member\, and ship’s carpenter on the 122-foot\, 1926 schooner Adventure. Greg holds a Master’s Credential for vessels up to 200 tons. C.B. DESCRIPTION:Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) presents a night of science by the sea with renowned aging scientist Steven Austad\, Ph.D. \nPlease join us on Tuesday\, June 3rd at 6p to hear Dr. Austad tell stories of some extraordinary animals\, considering why\, for example\, animal species that fly live longer than earthbound species\, and why animals found in the ocean live longest of all. \nDr. Austad’s approach to studying aging differs from the usual approach found in the field of aging science. Instead of focusing on species with short lifespans like fruit flies and mice\, which are experimentally manageable but unsuccessful at combating aging\, he investigates nature’s biggest successes\, like a 400-year-old shark or a 200-year-old whale. He suggests we should research long-lived species — instead of those with short lifespans — and use them as models for discovering novel anti-aging products and processes. \nDoors open at 5:30pm and the talk begins promptly at 6pm. \nThis talk is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. \nQuestions? B. Fisk experiencing most every aspect of organ building. Primarily a reed pipe voicer\, he has also been involved in woodworking\, pipe making\, drawing and design in AutoCAD\, CNC programming and operation\, organ maintenance\, among other tasks. SUMMARY:Coastal Lecture: Tidepools of Plum Island
DESCRIPTION:Take a virtual tour of Sandy Point State Reservation between the tides and into the tidal pools among the rocks to learn about the diverse species that reside in intertidal and subtidal zones. Join Lisa Hutchings of MassAudubon Joppa Flats who will share vibrant images and captivating\, informative video clips to help you learn about the local marine biodiversity\, native and non-native species\, and seasonal changes along the shore. After the ~30 minute presentation\, get hands-on with our tide pool touch tubs where you will get to observe\, handle and ask questions about a variety of LIVE tidepool creatures\, such as mollusks\, crustaceans\, echinoderms and more! \nAbout our speaker: Lisa Hutchings is the Lead Education Coordinator for MassAudubon at Joppa Flats. In this role\, she has been supervising and training field teachers\, interns\, and volunteers as young as 14 for the last 20 years with Mass Audubon’s North Shore. She teaches PreK through 12\, leads families on field trips\, hosts public events\, instructs adults in the field\, and presents at workshops\, conferences and symposiums. Lisa is passionate about marine biology\, enjoys birding\, biking and kayaking and loves taking people to share her newest obsession – mushroom hunting! Lisa lives with her husband\, Mark in Amesbury and has two sons\, Nate and Danny.
