Our goal has always been to be firmly rooted in our community with everything we do. Whether it’s collaborating with other local businesses in our area (FRANK / Crave / Wandering Soul/ Fat Tuna Charters/ Half Baked) or giving back to the place that has given us so much (Beverly Hospital/HarborLight community partners). This idea of community rings true in our taproom as well. Our space has become a meeting place to hear local musicians\, enjoy local artists\, and get a taste of various foods in the Beverly area . It’s also a space where we would like ALL members of our community to feel welcome and accepted. For many\, craft breweries can sometimes feel exclusive and intimidating for those that don’t consider themselves “beer nerds” and this is a notion we will always work hard to dispel. SUMMARY:Hidden Histories: Black History Month Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate Black History Month with “Quietly Hidden: A Story of Architectural Salvage and Discovered Craftsmanship\,” a lecture that honors and educates the achievements\, resilience and creativity of Black artisans. Senior Curator\, Christie Jackson will present her research on Long Hill\, with a story of early preservation\, the untold story of enslaved artisans\, and one family’s passion for history all combine. Her groundbreaking research uncovers Long Hill’s enriching history of the Federal-era ornamental carvings salvaged from Charleston\, SC and used in the Sedgwick’s 1921 house that was created in part by highly skilled enslaved craftsmen. \nLong Hill was the Beverly summer home of Atlantic Monthly editor Ellery Sedgwick and his family from 1916 until it was bequeathed to The Trustees in 1979. This lecture will take place inside the the historic home where participants will then join Christie as she gives a tour of the first floor of Long Hill to highlight the architectural elements included in her presentation. Copies are available at the PEM Shop. \nAbout the Book \n“No Ship Sets Out To Be A Shipwreck is a poetic and philosophical meditation ignited by a beautiful\, frightening\, mysterious object: the 17th-century Swedish warship Vasa\, which sank only minutes into its maiden voyage and lay forgotten underwater until it was found and raised more than three hundred years later. \nBeginning with Joan Wickersham’s first sight of the ship in its Stockholm museum\, her pieces – intimate\, irreverent\, urgent – weave together the Vasa’s story and the associations it evokes. She addresses the shipbuilders\, the divers and restorers\, the men and women who drowned in the wreck\, and the objects they left behind: shoes and cooking pots\, game boards and bones. Romano and his work were larger-than-life\, and his concern for the human condition was the focus of most if not all of his artwork. Susan Erony will present on Romano’s work for the Federal Arts Program. \nSusan Erony is an artist in Gloucester\, whose work focuses on issues of humanity. She has exhibited extensively in Europe\, Canada\, and United States\, and her work is in numerous public and private collections. Erica was chosen as a New Face for the 2018 Just for Laughs Festival (Montreal) and also performed at the San Francisco Sketchfest\, the Moontower Comedy Festival (Austin\, TX)\, the Blue Whale Comedy Festival (Tulsa\, OK)\, the Boston Comedy Festival and RIOT L.A. Fest. \nErica starred in the ABC Digital series The Off-Season\, was a semi-regular performer/writer on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion\, and a recurring character on the Audible series\, Dr. Katz: The Audiobook. Her first album Sad Lemon hit #1 on the iTunes comedy charts and her first one-hour comedy special La Vie en Rhodes was shot as part of the Tribeca Drive-In Fest (at Pasadena’s famous Rose Bowl) and can now be viewed on Amazon Prime. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a full day Conferece on Newburyport and the China Trade\, 1844-2024: Commerce\, Diplomacy\, and the Arts in the Years of the Dragon. \nIn 1843\, Caleb Cushing of Newburyport resigned from the U.S. Congress to become America’s first commissioner to China. He arrived in China with four American warships\, laden with gifts including revolvers\, a telescope\, and an encyclopedia\, and used both threats and flattery to achieve his ends. The subsequent 1844 Treaty of Wanghia\, named for the village where it was signed\, was the first treaty between the U.S. and China. It was one more way in which Newburyport and the China Trade were inextricably linked. \nJoin Eric Jay Dolin\, author of When America Met China\, and Dane Morrison\, author of True Yankees: The South Seas & the Discovery of American Identity\, along with art\, shipbuilding\, and modern China experts to evaluate the impact of the China Trade on various aspects of our community\, our nation\, and the world. \nThis full-day event includes lunch and all sessions and is hosted by The Governor’s Academy. \nTickets are $45 for Museum of Old Newbury Members; $60 for non-members
