SUMMARY:The Die is Now Cast: Essex County's Response to the Intolerable Acts
DESCRIPTION:Nicknamed the “Intolerable Acts” by New Englanders\, the passage of these punitive laws pushed Massachusetts\, to the brink of war. \nIn December 1773\, a mob of Boston residents stormed three merchant ships moored at Griffin’s Wharf and quickly destroyed the chests of East India Company tea located onboard. Three months later\, in response to the Boston Tea Party\, Parliament passed a series of laws known as the Boston Port Bill. These legislative acts essentially stripped Massachusetts colonists of their constitutional\, economic\, and political rights. \nNicknamed the “Intolerable Acts” by New Englanders\, the passage of these punitive laws pushed Massachusetts\, including the colonists of Essex County\, to the brink of war.\nJoin Historian Alexander Cain as he explores Essex County’s political and constitutional responses to the Intolerable Acts and the steps the colonists of the county took to prepare for war with England after reconciliation became impossible. \nMeredith Farm is a privately owned\, 188 acre farm in Topsfield\, which has been recently renovated. Its 1793 Barn houses an extensive private collection of artifacts related to American history. \nThis program is part of Essex County Revolution 250.Essex County Revolution 250 is an initiative of Essex Heritage in partnership with Massachusetts Rev250 and dozens of regional museums\, heritage sites\, and organizations\, with the intention of raising awareness and highlighting the diverse stories of Essex County\, Massachusetts residents\, free and unfree\, during the American Revolutionary period. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, May 6:\nPresented by: John Leysath\, Curatorial Director at Hammond Castle Museum \nTelevision is one of the most ubiquitous technologies in human history\, so much so that we tend to take it for granted. However\, the story of TV is a winding tale of decades of painstaking research\, false starts\, technological dead ends and breakthroughs\, commercial failures and successes\, aspirational ideals\, and human drama. The full picture of TV is composed of a mosaic of individual scientists\, engineers\, and industrialists who helped to bring it to life\, including our founder\, John Hays Hammond Jr.\, whose contributions to the medium are often overlooked. “Who invented television?” is not a simple question. The lecture will be accompanied by a musical performance featuring the New England Klezmer\, which includes Yaeko Miranda\, Jim Prendergast & Sonny Barbato. \nJanet feels it is her mission to spread messages of how to live one’s life\, overcoming hatred with resilience\, grace\, dignity\, love and forgiveness by sharing her personal story of survival. Janet feels strongly about letting people know the horrors she went through so that future generations will make sure it will never happen again. Reach out to Rabbi Avremi Raichik at Rabbi@Chabadcapeann.com for more details. \nAbout Janet \nBorn Gustawa Singer in 1935 in Nowy Targ\, Poland\, Janet and her family enjoyed a comfortable and stable life until the Nazi invasion in 1939. A clinical social worker\, Janet will recount how at just seven years old\, she witnessed her mother being transported to the death camp at Belzec and her father being assigned to forced labor. Janet witnessed unimaginable danger and the love\, courage\, and dedication of a few extraordinarily righteous citizens who saved her life. \nWhen Janet first arrived in the U.S. in 1947\, her father asked her to write everything she could remember since they were separated in August of 1942. During his life\, they never spoke about their collective torture. There is a lot of guilt in survivors whose stories didn’t include concentration camps\, so Janet considered herself someone not worthy of discussing. Her notes from her arrival were rediscovered by her family in 1984 and became a blueprint for self-discovery. Her written account\, originally in Polish\, is now recognized as “righteous among nations” at Yad Vashem in Israel and Janet can share her trauma and the traumas experienced by her family through this memoir\, interviews\, and speaking engagements. \nJanet speaks openly about her experiences as a child survivor of the Holocaust with thousands of people each year through regular speaking engagements with libraries\, schools\, houses of worship\, and government agencies. Her talks raise awareness and understanding of the dangers of prejudice and encourage audiences to stand up to any kind of discrimination and injustice. In 2021\, she was invited to tell her story before the Massachusetts State Legislature\, on the occasion of the passage of Bill H.692\, an act mandating statewide genocide education in all secondary schools. \nJanet documented her story in her forthcoming memoir\, Becoming Janet: Finding Myself in the Holocaust. DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Caldwell’s Newburyport Rum was produced along the waterfront for 171 years (with a short break during Prohibition)? The rum business boomed in Newbury(port) in the 18th century\, with ships arriving from the West Indies with cargoes of molasses to be distilled into potent\, inexpensive New England rum. \nAnd we drank almost as much as we made – about three pints of rum per adult male per week in the 1770’s\, and British attempts to regulate and tax this beverage helped to stoke the flames of revolution! \nJoin executive director Bethany Dorau for an illustrated talk and tasting on the history of rum in 18th century Newbury(port). Learn the language of punch bowls and check out the bar tab from Newburyport’s Wolfe Tavern on the eve of Revolution. Learn how the production and distribution of rum changed over time\, and how westward expansion signalled the end of the rule of rum. SUMMARY:Lecture: Privateers of the Caribbean: Bermuda and the Bahamas After the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear Ross Nedervelt\, the 2023 Frances E. Malamy Fellow at PEM’s Phillips Library\, present the findings of his research project: “Loyalism\, Privateering\, and American Sovereignty in the Atlantic Border-sea\, 1783-1815.” \nBetween 1783 and 1819\, the newly independent United States fought a series of skirmishes with Britain over control of the islands of Bermuda and the Bahamas. American loyalists and British military occupying the islands created a military and cultural bulwark to defend against the nascent United States\, thwarting the new country’s endeavors to expand its commercial influence into the colonies of the British Caribbean. In the decades following the American Revolution\, the British government remade Bermuda from a commercial hub into the Royal Navy’s staging ground for the assault on Washington\, D.C. during the War of 1812. \nThe Phillips Library Frances E. Malamy Research Fellowship program\, funded by the Malamy family\, awards $5\,500 to one recipient each year to perform independent research for three months at the library located in Rowley\, Massachusetts.

Join us for a reception of students and alumni from the creative writing program before the reading. \nKevin Carey’s books include: three books of poetry: The One Fifteen to Penn Station (2012)\, Jesus Was a Homeboy (2016) which was an Honor book for the Paterson Literary Prize and Set in Stone (2020) all from CavanKerry Press\, as well as three books of fiction: The Beach People (2014) Red Bird Chapbooks\, Murder in the Marsh (2020) Darkstroke Books\, and a new novel Junior Miles and the Junkman – September (2023) from Regal House Publishing / Fitzroy books. His poems have appeared three times on The Writers Almanac on National Public Radio and once on The Academy of American Poets Poem a Day. Kevin is also a playwright and a filmmaker. His stage play The Stand or Sal is Dead (a murder mystery comedy) premiered at the Actor’s Studio in Newburyport\, MA in 2018. He has co-directed & co-produced two documentaries about poets\, All That Lies Between Us and Unburying Malcolm Miller\, which premiered at the Massachusetts Poetry Festival in 2017. From 2012-2018\, she served as the executive director of the Massachusetts Poetry Festival. Her poems and articles have appeared in The New York Times Magazine\, the Academy of American Poets’ Poem-A-Day series\, American Poetry Review\, Poetry\, and Sierra magazine\, among others. Her poem\, “At the Rededication of the Emmett Till Memorial\,” was a co-winner of the 2022 Allen Ginsberg Poetry award from the Poetry Center at Passaic County Community College. The recipient of fellowships from the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, Cave Canem\, and the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund\, O’Neil was the 2019-2020 John and Renée Grisham Writer-in-Residence at the University of Mississippi\, Oxford. She currently serves as the 2022-2024 board chair of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP).\nO’Neil earned her BA from Old Dominion University and her MFA from New York University. DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Lowell’s Boat Shop Winter Speaker Series\, join us for the tragic tale of Captain Pritchard aboard the Elcano. \nJoin us at the Museum of Old Newbury for an unforgettable evening on Tuesday\, Feb 27\, 2024 at 7:00 PM. \nOn June 15\, 2023\, the Museum of Old Newbury purchased a slate tablet from an auction in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, a notebook-paper sized piece of thin stone\, double-sided and framed in walnut. Notes kept on slate were ephemeral. Slates were used to keep the “rough log”\, and they were erased after the notes were copied down into the ship’s official log. \nThis slate deck log became\, accidentally\, a permanent record of the last moments of a man’s life\, and revealed a gripping story of love\, loss\, murder\, and bicycling in the Himalayas. Intrigued? Come hear the whole wild story and see this piece of ultimate ephemera for yourself. \nThe story of the Elcano has been revealed through a series of partnerships. Lowell’s Boat Shop executive director Graham McKay and MOON director Bethany Groff Dorau worked together to decipher the deck log\, while the Custom House Maritime Museum lent a copy of a journal that revealed another Pritchard – the Captain’s wife Emily – as she made her way to Calcutta and home again. \nJoin us for a Dark and Stormy evening with maritime-themed refreshments.

DESCRIPTION:Let’s learn about whales! Walk inside a giant\, inflatable humpback whale to learn more about these magnificent creatures. Learning about whales is also a great way to think critically about what you can do to help the wild world and our oceans. \nProgram participants will be sent an introductory video prior to the program date about whales and The Whalemobile. SUMMARY:CAMTalk: History Series — Geology is Destiny – With Ed Becker
DESCRIPTION:The landscape of Cape Ann has been shaped by ancient geologic forces\, from the collision of tectonic plates to the movement of glacial ice. Using examples from the Museum’s current works on view\, including Edward Hopper’s 1928 painting  Cape Ann Granite\, we’ll explore how this geologic history led to Cape Ann’s important quarry industry and to landforms that have inspired artists for over two centuries. \nEd Becker is the former president of Essex County Greenbelt\, a nonprofit land trust that has conserved nearly 20\,000 acres of land north of Boston.  He has been a docent at the Cape Ann Museum since 2019.

The presentation is extensively researched and illustrates a lovely and short-lived time gone by\, c1900. Learn about the 15 hotels\, who they served\, and what happened to them. Visual storyteller Susan Morreale will take you around the East Gloucester peninsula to a world where guests stayed\, not for a week\, but for a season. Understand how the land changed from one of farms and pastures to a center of resort life\, and became the most dense area of summer hotels between Boston and Maine.
