SUMMARY:Hidden Histories: Black History Month Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate Black History Month with “Quietly Hidden: A Story of Architectural Salvage and Discovered Craftsmanship\,” a lecture that honors and educates the achievements\, resilience and creativity of Black artisans. Senior Curator\, Christie Jackson will present her research on Long Hill\, with a story of early preservation\, the untold story of enslaved artisans\, and one family’s passion for history all combine. Her groundbreaking research uncovers Long Hill’s enriching history of the Federal-era ornamental carvings salvaged from Charleston\, SC and used in the Sedgwick’s 1921 house that was created in part by highly skilled enslaved craftsmen. \nLong Hill was the Beverly summer home of Atlantic Monthly editor Ellery Sedgwick and his family from 1916 until it was bequeathed to The Trustees in 1979. This lecture will take place inside the the historic home where participants will then join Christie as she gives a tour of the first floor of Long Hill to highlight the architectural elements included in her presentation. Our teachers will introduce core concepts and guide your experience as you pot\, prune\, and design your very own bonsai tree! Our Guarantee: These tiny trees are so hardy we guarantee you can keep yours alive\, or we’ll replace it. \nThis workshop will be hosted at Old Planters Brewery. Our goal has always been to be firmly rooted in our community with everything we do. Whether it’s collaborating with other local businesses in our area (FRANK / Crave / Wandering Soul/ Fat Tuna Charters/ Half Baked) or giving back to the place that has given us so much (Beverly Hospital/HarborLight community partners). DESCRIPTION:Title: Wood Type Use\, History\, and Identification lecture and workshop\, 1 pm\nEvent leader: James Grieshaber\nCost: Free with Museum admission\nDate: Saturday March 15\nStart time: 1 pm \nThis lecture will cover aspects of wood type history\, as seen through the lens of the historic Wood Type Pattern Library of Virgin Wood Type. James Grieshaber\, who wrote The Virgin Wood Type Bible\, is a\nnoted type historian and type designer who will also speak to some of the uses of wood type printing historic broadsides. He will be in residence at the Museum of Printing for a week prior to the lecture helping identify and organize the museum’s wood type collection\, and will be presenting on what he’s found there. \nVirgin Wood Type produces twentieth-century wood fonts using original patterns from historic wood type manufacturers\, as well as developing revivals of Victorian-era wood type classics. They also issue new designs from contemporary type designers\, produced in the traditional manner\, using a vintage pantograph router\, originally owned by American Wood Type Mfg. Co. \nThe Virgin Wood Type Bible enables the reader to gain insight into the history of\, and be able to identify\, over 500 historic wood type designs. To accomplish this\, Grieshaber has located and researched all of the known printed catalogs from the makers\, as well as considered physical clues on the over 300 fonts represented in the Virgin Wood Type Pattern Library. These include patterns from American\, Acme\, Allied\, Empire\, and some from Stephenson\, Blake who had a US distribution agreement with American Wood Type. Also included are new fonts manufactured by Virgin Wood Type\, designed by the Grieshaber and others\, which often draw on historical models. \nJames Grieshaber has been a designer for newspaper and advertising agencies\, and a type designer for P22 Type Foundry\, Typeco\, and others. James is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology and has taught Typography at RIT. While working as a wood type designer and cutter for Virgin Wood Type\, Grieshaber cleaned\, cataloged\, and identified all the historic wood type patterns in their collection\, which led him to create this book. \nFunding by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) Massachusetts 250 Grant Program. Supporting the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution with projects that highlight historic themes of revolution and independence\, celebrate significant “firsts” in Massachusetts history\, or take a creative or innovative approach to commemorating the state’s past 250 years.

SUMMARY:Coastal Lecture: Changing Natures Clocks – The Signature of Climate Change in MA
DESCRIPTION:Have you noticed earlier blooms\, or later fall foliage in recent years? As our environment changes\, the seasonal timing of natural events is changing also. Join us for a lecture with Brandies Professor of Ecology Colleen Hitchcock\, to learn about this seasonal timing\, known as phenology\, and how scientists study these shifts in timing to understand more about environmental trends. Scientists can’t collect all this data on their own\, and participants will learn about the importance of crowdsourced data\, and community science\, in order to study these seasonal shifts from year to year. \nAbout our Speaker: \nColleen Hitchcock is Professor of Ecology at Brandeis University in the Biology Department and chair of the Environmental Studies Program. She holds a Ph.D. in Ecology\, Evolution\, and Biodiversity Studies from the University of Pennsylvania and a BS from Boston College. Hitchcock teaches courses in Conservation Biology\, Ecology\, Biology of Climate Change\, and Participatory Science. Her academic interests focused on the role of participatory science in ecological inquiry and conservation biology specifically relating to studies of biodiversity\, conservation\, phenology\, and climate change. She is interested in both the power of the public in scientific research and the application of participatory/citizen science research as a model for learning by students. Her animal sculptures range in size from gigantic to hand-held. After the slide presentation we will examine one of her pieces in the CAM collection: Pelican\, Bronze\, c. 1940s. \nYou are invited to join us every Thursday for a unique experience. DESCRIPTION:Carlson Education Center\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA\nFree Program\, Registration Required \nFor Women’s History Month\, take an up-close look at sculpture by Katharine Lane Weems. \nKatharine Lane Weems: Odds Were Against Me. Taking off from her memoir of this title\, we will explore this determined female sculptor\, the period in which she lived and her choices about making art. Her animal sculptures range in size from gigantic to hand-held. After the slide presentation we will examine one of her pieces in the CAM collection: Pelican\, Bronze\, c. 1940s. \nYou are invited to join us every Thursday for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Education Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. No special knowledge needed! SUMMARY:CraneOutdoors: King Tide Hike and Climate Cafe
DESCRIPTION:This high tide is royalty! Here’s your chance to see the king….tide that is. Join us for a hike to learn about extreme high tides\, known as king tides\, which are happening more often due to environmental change. These extreme tides have a variety of impacts on coastal infrastructure\, including restricted access on low lying roads\, flooded buildings\, and impacts of erosion\, debris\, and salt-water intrusion/damage. The king tide also provides us with a window to the future\, illustrating what an average high tide might look like in a few decades due to sea level rise. On this hike you will learn what causes king tides\, see the tidal impacts first-hand\, and learn what The Trustees are doing to increase the coastal resilience of our treasured coastal environments. \nPlease be prepared for a moderately strenuous 1-2 mile hike over gravel trails\, grass\, and soft sand\, with some elevation gain. \nProgram Refunds/Cancellations: In the event that a program is cancelled due to severe weather\, low enrollment\, or other circumstances\, we will notify you as soon as possible by email and issue you a full refund within 14 days of the cancellation. If you cannot attend a program as planned\, contact the Trustees property 7 days prior to the start of the program to receive a full refund or to be rebooked into a future available event. Refunds will not be granted for registration cancellations placed fewer than 7 days before the start of the program for any reason. There are no refunds for missed events or late arrivals. The Trustees reserves the right to change program locations\, schedules\, or instructors when necessary. DESCRIPTION:NAHS is honored to possess the handwritten diary of James Stevens. This treasure chronicles his time fighting for our country’s independence from the day he took up arms until the end of the war. Linguist and NAHS facilities manager\, Antoine Trombino-Ponte\, has poured over this diary and reconstructed the 1775 voice of James Stevens. His recordings will be available for all to hear in the Rev250 exhibit at the Stevens Center. Join us as he explains his process for reconstruction the voice.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 19th for the Revolutionary History Tour Shuttle\, a special collaboration between the North Andover Historical Society and the Andover Center for History and Culture! \nEmbark on an adventure through our shared heritage as we bring our two towns\, once united during the American Revolution\, back together for a day of family-friendly learning and fun. \nLearn about historical sites in “old” North Andover that stood in 1775 and helped to shape our nation’s journey to independence\, including the Paul Revere bell and Steeple Tour at North Parish Church\, the First and Second Burial Grounds and mustering grounds at Kittredge Farm and Becky’s Pond. In ‘old’ Andover\, you will visit the site of the 1776 Gunpowder Mill and take the path taken by the Minute Men on “the road to Billerica” on April 19th\, 1775. \nOur experienced guides will share captivating stories and insights of our local connections to the revolution. As the bus passes more than 24 homes\, you will hear the engaging stories and anecdotes about the people who lived in them in the 1775 era\, many who were involved in the American Revolution. \nThe bus will stop twice for passengers to get off\, one in each town: \nAt the Timothy Johnson House in North Andover\, take a short tour of the historic kitchen and dining room and enjoy a glass of lemonade.\nAt the Blanchard Upton House in Andover\, take a short garden tour and enjoy a glass of cider.\nReserve your spot on one of two shuttles (11am and 1pm). Each tour takes approximately 1.5 hours. Please note there is limited seating of 40 seats on each shuttle bus.

SUMMARY:Coastal Lecture: Awareness Inspires Conservation
DESCRIPTION:As our coastlines change\, the areas where sharks visit along the coast is changing. With all the shark-tivity in 2024\, the team at Crane Beach has been working with experts to learn more about these important top predators\, and what their presence means for the health of our coastlines. \nOne of the groups we’ve been collaborating with is the The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC)\, a nonprofit organization supporting scientific research\, educating the community\, and improving public safety. AWSC strives to increase knowledge of Atlantic white sharks to change public perception and conserve the species and ensure biologically diverse marine ecosystems. \nJoin us for a lecture with AWSC Community Engagement Manager Kristen Smith. To learn about ongoing white shark research projects being conducted and funded by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy\, how that research is impacting conservation and public safety efforts\, and up to date information on what that research has taught us. Audience members will have an opportunity to view videos and photographs during the research season and develop their knowledge of what a shark is and what it takes to conduct white shark research. \nAt the end of the program\, audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn how they can get involved in shark and ocean conservation. \nAbout our speaker: \nKristen Smith works as the Community Engagement Manager for the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC). Kristen attended Coastal Carolina University from where she received her degree in Marine Science and aided in her university’s shark research program. Kristen has been with the AWSC since 2016. In her role\, she coordinates and manages a variety of initiatives\, including educational programs\, community outreach efforts\, the college internship program\, and social media campaigns. Kristen has been featured on platforms such as the Today Show\, Channel 7 News Boston\, and Good Morning America. These appearances have highlighted AWSC’s white shark ecotourism program and public safety initiatives related to white sharks. \nThe Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) is a nonprofit organization supporting scientific research\, educating the community\, and improving public safety surrounding white sharks.
