Parking is first come\, first served and carpooling is encouraged. \nThis talk by Martha Oaks\, the Museum’s Chief Curator and contributing author to the upcoming Avery\, Gottlieb\, & Rothko: By the Sea exhibition\, will explore Milton Avery and Sally Michel’s earliest visits to Gloucester\, setting the stage for future stays with artist friends. What was it that drew the couple here and inspired them to keep coming back? Who did they rub shoulders with on Cape Ann and who was taking note of their work? Learn what has changed in the local art colony over the past century and what has stayed the same. \nThis lecture is presented in conjunction with the museum’s upcoming exhibition\, Avery\, Gottlieb\, & Rothko: By the Sea\, offering context and insight into the artists and themes in the exhibit. Oaks has curated numerous exhibitions exploring the history and the artists of Cape Ann and has contributed to Fitz Henry Lane Online\, a digital resource and catalog to the American marine artist. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Presentation and Exhibition Preview celebrating the opening of our two new Spring and Summer temporary exhibitions: Inside the Faraday Cage: The Science of Things That Aren’t So and a mini-exhibit A Tale of Two Pianos. \nThis exclusive preview offers guests early access to both exhibitions\, along with curator-led presentations that provide insight into the ideas\, individuals\, and historical context behind the work. \nEvening program:\n5:30 pm–6:00 pm Networking\n6:00 pm–6:45 pm Presentations\n6:50 pm–7:30 pm Tours of the Exhibit\nLight refreshments will be served. \nCuratorial Director John Leysath will present an in-depth exploration of Hammond’s 1951 Faraday cage experiments\, conducted in collaboration with physician and parapsychologist Andrija Puharich and renowned psychic medium Eileen Garrett. His talk examines the broader landscape of mid-20th-century psychic research\, the tension between belief and skepticism\, and the importance of scientific rigor in the study of paranormal phenomena. The presentation also considers the wider influence of this research\, including its connections to government-funded investigations. \nThe exhibition Inside the Faraday Cage features a life-size\, non-working replica of the experimental apparatus\, offering visitors a rare opportunity to step inside and engage with the physical environment of Hammond’s investigations. \nAssistant Curator Donovan Lafontaine will introduce A Tale of Two Pianos\, a focused installation exploring the history behind Hammond’s three major musical inventions. The ‘Pirafon’ piano\, a combination radio\, phonograph\, and piano instrument\, and the ‘Tonal Pedal’ piano\, a system of organ swell-like\, movable shutters for piano instruments. The mini-exhibit will also feature an interactive model of the ‘Tonal Pedal’ system\, for viewers to better understand its features. \nAdvance reservations are required. DESCRIPTION:Join Historic New England and the Whittier Home Association for a special two-part tour exploring the lives and legacies of abolitionists Joshua Coffin and John Greenleaf Whittier. Participants will tour the Coffin House in Newbury\, a Historic New England property and the home of teacher and abolitionist Joshua Coffin and the John Greenleaf Whittier Home in Amesbury. At the Coffin House\, visitors will tour Coffin’s study and home\, view his gravesite\, and learn about his leadership in the abolitionist movement and his influence as Whittier’s teacher. At the Whittier Home\, participants will explore Whittier’s life as a writer\, reformer\, and prominent voice for the anti-slavery cause.\nMember $20\nNonmember $25\nOne group will tour the Coffin House while the other tours the John Greenleaf Whittier Home. Groups will break for lunch\, then switch locations in the afternoon to experience the other site. The first tour is 10 a.m.–11:00 a.m. and the second is 1 p.m.–2 p.m.You will be notified of your group via email before the program.\nAdvance registration required. SUMMARY:Falconry & the Medieval World: A Live Bird Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Wingmasters’ Birds of Prey returns to the Hammond Castle Museum! \nFalconry is the sport of hunting with a trained bird of prey. It is also the demanding art of training a predatory bird that is by nature wary of people to hunt cooperatively with a human partner. While the sport has a 4\,000-year history\, its glory days were indisputably in the medieval period. While this presentation centers around live birds used in falconry\, it is not a flight demonstration but a history-rich look at an ancient sport. Focusing on the medieval period\, it explains the characteristics of the birds of prey used\, how the sport reflected the lifestyle of the time\, and the historical reasons behind falconry’s rise and fall. \nPlease note: This program is only intended for ages 8 and up. Tickets for this event are $20 adults\, $10 kids. This ticket grants you access to the Falconry & the Medieval World: A Live Bird Presentation\, which will be held in a tent on the ocean-facing lawn\, as well as access to the Museum Shop. A separate tour ticket will be required to enter beyond the Museum Shop for a guided or self-guided tour. Ticket holders may purchase Self-Guided Tour tickets in the Museum Shop at a 20% discount. \nAbout WINGMASTERS:\nJulie Anne Collier and Jim Parks are both licensed wildlife rehabilitators based in Massachusetts and are dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of North American birds of prey. Together they care for injured birds of prey at their private center in Leverett\, Massachusetts. Most of the birds they rehabilitate can ultimately be released back into the wild\, but in some cases\, the birds are left permanently handicapped. Julie and Jim are further licensed to provide a home for these non-releasable raptors and to use them for educational programs. Since 1994\, WINGMASTERS has presented over 10\,000 programs at schools\, libraries\, and museums throughout New England. \nAll proceeds from this educational program support additional educational programs and ongoing Museum restorations. DESCRIPTION:Each year we meet hundreds\, if not thousands\, of individuals who can trace their family line back to the Salem witch trials. We often tell visitors that the English colonists of 1692 were the founding fathers and mothers of our country. They were themselves descended from the earliest settlers\, who were establishing a new country and took the biblical instruction “be fruitful and multiply” to heart. \nIt is fascinating to consider the many connections between the Salem witch trials and the Revolutionary War generation\, particularly the one most often referred to as our “Founding Fathers.” Part II of our Rev250 lecture series will focus on four more notable connections\, including witchcraft skeptic Robert Calef\, Ipswich court clerk Thomas Wade\, condemned witch Mary Bradbury\, and accuser Bathsheba Pope. \nJoin us on Thursday\, September 17th at 1:00 pm for this free\, virtual program.\nRegistration is required for this event.

DESCRIPTION:Women\, Spinning\, and Resistance: Stacey Fraser \nIn the years leading up to the American Revolution\, New England women played an important role in resisting British policies through their everyday lives and work. On August 31\, 1769\, forty-five women in Lexington\, Massachusetts\, gathered for a spinning protest—one of more than sixty such demonstrations held throughout New England between 1768 and 1770. By spinning wool and linen yarn together\, these women demonstrated their ability to produce the textiles needed by their families while rejecting reliance on imported British goods. \nJoin Stacey Fraser for a fascinating look at how women used their social roles\, domestic skills\, and community networks to participate in the growing resistance to British rule. Discover how these seemingly everyday acts of spinning and boycotting became powerful forms of protest in the years leading up to the American Revolutionary War. \nAbout the Speaker:\nStacey Fraser is Assistant Curator at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library in Lexington\, Massachusetts. She recently curated an exhibition exploring Lexington’s role in the American Revolution and chaired the museum’s 50th anniversary committee. Stacey also serves on the advisory board of LexSeeHer\, a Lexington nonprofit dedicated to making women visible in history.
