SUMMARY:Falconry & the Medieval World: A Live Bird Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Wingmasters’ Birds of Prey returns to the Hammond Castle Museum! \nFalconry is the sport of hunting with a trained bird of prey. It is also the demanding art of training a predatory bird that is by nature wary of people to hunt cooperatively with a human partner. While the sport has a 4\,000-year history\, its glory days were indisputably in the medieval period. While this presentation centers around live birds used in falconry\, it is not a flight demonstration but a history-rich look at an ancient sport. Focusing on the medieval period\, it explains the characteristics of the birds of prey used\, how the sport reflected the lifestyle of the time\, and the historical reasons behind falconry’s rise and fall. \nPlease note: This program is only intended for ages 8 and up. Tickets for this event are $20 adults\, $10 kids. This ticket grants you access to the Falconry & the Medieval World: A Live Bird Presentation\, which will be held in a tent on the ocean-facing lawn\, as well as access to the Museum Shop. A separate tour ticket will be required to enter beyond the Museum Shop for a guided or self-guided tour. Ticket holders may purchase Self-Guided Tour tickets in the Museum Shop at a 20% discount. \nAbout WINGMASTERS:\nJulie Anne Collier and Jim Parks are both licensed wildlife rehabilitators based in Massachusetts and are dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of North American birds of prey. Together they care for injured birds of prey at their private center in Leverett\, Massachusetts. Most of the birds they rehabilitate can ultimately be released back into the wild\, but in some cases\, the birds are left permanently handicapped. Julie and Jim are further licensed to provide a home for these non-releasable raptors and to use them for educational programs. Since 1994\, WINGMASTERS has presented over 10\,000 programs at schools\, libraries\, and museums throughout New England. \nAll proceeds from this educational program support additional educational programs and ongoing Museum restorations. DESCRIPTION:Join Manchester-based artist\, Fiona Sinéad Brehony at her Artist Talk to learn about her process and technique in her residency in collaboration with Ocean Alliance\, made possible through the Goetemann Artist Residency program. \nThe residency offers Brehony an opportunity to explore Gloucester Harbor through Richard White’s concept of the organic machine\, simultaneously a natural system and human infrastructure\, yet also something so vast and distributed it exceeds our ability to fully grasp it. \nShe will engage in acts of listening\, watching and writing to see what emerges\, inviting participants in for gatherings where ideas can transform collectively. Working with Ocean Alliance’s whale song archives\, she hopes to develop poetic work that explores ocean presence\, waters shared with whales\, where freshwater meets salt and interaction shifts from intimate to incomprehensible.

DESCRIPTION:Each year we meet hundreds\, if not thousands\, of individuals who can trace their family line back to the Salem witch trials. We often tell visitors that the English colonists of 1692 were the founding fathers and mothers of our country. They were themselves descended from the earliest settlers\, who were establishing a new country and took the biblical instruction “be fruitful and multiply” to heart. \nIt is fascinating to consider the many connections between the Salem witch trials and the Revolutionary War generation\, particularly the one most often referred to as our “Founding Fathers.” Part II of our Rev250 lecture series will focus on four more notable connections\, including witchcraft skeptic Robert Calef\, Ipswich court clerk Thomas Wade\, condemned witch Mary Bradbury\, and accuser Bathsheba Pope. \nJoin us on Thursday\, September 17th at 1:00 pm for this free\, virtual program.\nRegistration is required for this event.

DESCRIPTION:Women\, Spinning\, and Resistance: Stacey Fraser \nIn the years leading up to the American Revolution\, New England women played an important role in resisting British policies through their everyday lives and work. On August 31\, 1769\, forty-five women in Lexington\, Massachusetts\, gathered for a spinning protest—one of more than sixty such demonstrations held throughout New England between 1768 and 1770. By spinning wool and linen yarn together\, these women demonstrated their ability to produce the textiles needed by their families while rejecting reliance on imported British goods. \nJoin Stacey Fraser for a fascinating look at how women used their social roles\, domestic skills\, and community networks to participate in the growing resistance to British rule. Discover how these seemingly everyday acts of spinning and boycotting became powerful forms of protest in the years leading up to the American Revolutionary War. \nAbout the Speaker:\nStacey Fraser is Assistant Curator at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library in Lexington\, Massachusetts. She recently curated an exhibition exploring Lexington’s role in the American Revolution and chaired the museum’s 50th anniversary committee. Stacey also serves on the advisory board of LexSeeHer\, a Lexington nonprofit dedicated to making women visible in history.
