SUMMARY:Our Founding Mothers and Fathers: More Revolutionary War Connections to the Salem Witch Trials
DESCRIPTION:Each year we meet hundreds\, if not thousands\, of individuals who can trace their family line back to the Salem witch trials. We often tell visitors that the English colonists of 1692 were the founding fathers and mothers of our country. They were themselves descended from the earliest settlers\, who were establishing a new country and took the biblical instruction “be fruitful and multiply” to heart. \nIt is fascinating to consider the many connections between the Salem witch trials and the Revolutionary War generation\, particularly the one most often referred to as our “Founding Fathers.” Part II of our Rev250 lecture series will focus on four more notable connections\, including witchcraft skeptic Robert Calef\, Ipswich court clerk Thomas Wade\, condemned witch Mary Bradbury\, and accuser Bathsheba Pope. \nJoin us on Thursday\, September 17th at 1:00 pm for this free\, virtual program.\nRegistration is required for this event.

DESCRIPTION:Step beyond the formal rooms and into the working heart of the home for a guided house tour focused on servant life at Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens. Once transformed from a simple farmhouse into a gentleman’s estate of the Country Place Era in the 1910s-1930s\, Ashdale Farm relied on a dedicated household staff to maintain its beauty and daily rhythm. \nDrawing on historical research and firsthand accounts\, this tour shares stories of the real people who worked at Ashdale Farm and examines the Coolidges’ sometimes complex relationship with them. From Helen’s bedroom and morning room to the bustling downstairs spaces and servants quarters\, this exclusive\, behind-the-scenes tour will explore parts of the house that are typically not open to the public. \nThis guided tour runs approximately 45 minutes. \nAll ages are welcome! \nPlease note: The tour is not fully accessible\, as it includes the second floor of the house\, which is accessible by stairs only. An accessible ramp provides entry to the first floor\, where visitors are welcome to explore. \nRefunds for this event must be requested 7 days prior to the date of the event. And why was Hammond absent during the first year of construction\, entrusting oversight of the project to one of the Hammond Research Laboratory’s engineers? \nJoin us as Collections Director Beth Welin takes us on a fascinating look back at 1926 as we explore the personal\, professional\, and historical events that shaped Hammond’s life during this pivotal year.
