DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Canadian perspective on the Arnold Expedition and the last siege of Québec in 1775-1776. \nDuring the first months of the War of Independence\, the Continental Army set its sights on the Province of Quebec. This British colony\, born from the ashes of New France\, is equally a threat and an opportunity for the Thirteen Colonies. How did the Canadian population reacted to the invasion of their territory and how did this first major campaign unfolded? Focusing on the events surrounding Québec City\, Discover the efforts to capture it\, from Benedict Arnold’s fateful expedition in the wilderness\, to the siege of the city in 1775\, the Battle of Québec (Dec. 31\, 1775)\, and the departure of the Continental Army in May 1776. \nA historian and historical interpretation coordinator for the Canadian National Battlefields Commission since 2007\, Luc Nicole-Labrie has an academic background in history\, tourism\, and culture. SUMMARY:Newburyport's Road to Independence\, Part I: The Long\, Dark Winter of 1776
DESCRIPTION:Historian Alexander Cain returns to Newburyport to explore one of the most tense and transformative moments in American history in this engaging lecture on Massachusetts and Newburyport in early 1776. As the Siege of Boston drags through a bitter winter\, he will discuss civilian suffering inside the town\, the controversial use of smallpox in efforts to break the stalemate\, and the evolving roles of the militia and the Continental Army. He then turns to Newburyport’s own story: the growing rumblings of independence\, the dangerous position of Loyalists\, and the unleashing of the town’s most potent weapon in support of the American cause: its “wolfpack” fleet of privateers\, which struck at the heart of British supply lines and reshaped Newburyport’s economy and identity on land and at sea. \nAlex has authored numerous research articles and presentations on the American Revolution\, including the Battles of Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill\, the Siege of Boston\,Massachusetts privateers and the experiences of New England and New York loyalist refugees during the Burgoyne Campaign. In addition\, he has published two books: We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution and I See Nothing but the Horrors of a Civil War: The Loyalists of McAlpin’s Corps of American Volunteers. He is also the creator of the blog and podcast Historical Nerdery (historicalnerdery.com). Currently\, he is in the process of writing his next book\, “For God’s Sake\, Fire!” – The Massachusetts Militia System on the Eve of the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, which is anticipated to be released in 2027.\nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism

DESCRIPTION:Birds need sleep as much as we do\, and they have evolved some unique habits to match their intensely energetic lifestyles. Ornithologist and author Roger Pasquier discusses the evolution and benefits of avian sleep\, including recent discoveries that some long-distance flyers can even sleep while in flight! Other birds sleep in short bouts of several seconds or a few minutes\, then wake up to look around for danger before going back to sleep. Human impacts like artificial light\, noise and climate change are changing how and where birds can get a good night’s rest. \nA book signing for Birds at Rest: The Behavior and Ecology of Avian Sleep (2025) follows the program. \nThis program is cohosted by the Essex County Ornithological Club and made possible by a gift from The Essex Charitable Foundation.

SUMMARY:Crane Lecture: Native American Art & Exhibitions at The Trustees
DESCRIPTION:November is Native American Heritage Month. Join us for a lecture with Tess Lukey\, The Trustees Associate Curator of Native American Arts. Learn about The Trustees efforts to center Indigenous voices and culture via our exhibits and programming\, to recognize the important contributions of Indigenous peoples to the lands now stewarded by The Trustees. Tess will discuss her work curating the Across Boundaries Across Barriers gallery at Fruitlands Museum in Harvard\, focused on the medicine wheel & seven directions\, featuring historic and contemporary works of art from several Native American communities in five sections that center the concepts associated with each direction. Tess will also discuss recent collaborations with local Indigenous educators & The Trustees statewide education team to develop curricula connecting students to this gallery and the medicine wheel. Finally\, Tess will touch on other projects and collaborative work\, such as the next installation in the Art & the Landscape series: The Land Tells Our Stories\, which will feature outdoor art coming to The Crane Estate in Spring 2026. \nAbout our speaker: \nTess Lukey joined The Trustees in 2022 as our first-ever Curator of Native American Art to develop exhibitions and research initiatives related to The Trustees’ Indigenous art collections. \nLukey\, an Aquinnah Wampanoag tribal member and lifelong New Englander\, works across the state\, and is based both at Fruitlands Museum and the deCordova Sculpture Park & Museum. She works closely with community members\, collectors\, and donors for potential acquisitions while offering broader access to and knowledge of The Trustees’ collections of art made by Indigenous peoples. \nLukey brings to The Trustees an extensive curatorial and educational experience. She has worked for the Museum of Fine Arts and the Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston\, and the John Sommers Gallery in Albuquerque\, New Mexico. She has also completed fellowships at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem\, Massachusetts\, and the Hibben Center for Archaeology Study and the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology in Albuquerque. \nLukey has a bachelor’s degree in ceramics and art history from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and a master’s degree in Native American art history with a minor in museum studies from the University of New Mexico. In her spare time\, Lukey is a traditional potter and basket weaver practicing the techniques of her own Indigenous community. She currently lives in Sutton\, Mass.\, the ancestral home of the Nipmuc Nation\, with her partners and children.

Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThe Historic Dogtown walking tour is almost three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. The terrain is up and down throughout\, over gentle hills. It was a journey marked by hypothermia\, disease\, starvation\, hurricanes\, and blizzards. Dozens perished; survivors endured eating everything from dogs to lip salve before reaching their target. Though the attack ultimately failed\, Arnold’s expedition helped pave the way for America’s eventual victory. \nIn Through a Howling Wilderness\, Desjardin tells this gripping story of endurance\, sacrifice\, and leadership before Arnold’s name became synonymous with treason. \nAbout the Speaker:Tom Desjardin holds a Ph.D. in U.S. History and is the author of multiple acclaimed books. A former archivist and historian at Gettysburg National Military Park\, he has taught at Bowdoin College\, advised film and television productions (including Gettysburg and Gods and Generals)\, and appeared on the History Channel\, A&E\, Discovery\, PBS\, and CSPAN. The people of the town stood ready to take action against the British\, and many of them did. In this walking tour down Middle Street — one of Gloucester’s oldest streets – we will step back in time to meet people who were witness to Revolution right from this spot; see where they lived and gathered\, in houses still standing today; and hear the stories of the roles they played in defending liberty\, as patriots\, privateers\, preachers and more. DESCRIPTION:Arnold was still on the Patriots’ side of the Revolution\, he and his troops camped in Danvers? \nOne of the most strategic and daring exploits of the patriot cause during the revolution. Part of the troops encamped in the Town of Danvers on the night of September 14\, 1775 on their way to Newburyport where they embarked for the Kennebec and their famous march through the pathless wilds of Maine successfully accomplished in spite of formidable obstacles and excessive privations. Native Americans\, specifically the Abenaki\, played a role as scouts and guides\, and there was also hope for broader support from the Canadian Indigenous populations. \nIn September 1775\, early in the American Revolutionary War\, Colonel Benedict Arnold led a force of 1\,100 Continental Army troops on an expedition from Cambridge in the Province of Massachusetts Bay to the gates of Quebec City.

DESCRIPTION:The Miniature Painter Revealed: Amalia Kussner’s Gilded Age Pursuit of Fame and Fortune \nA Talk by Kathleen Langone — with connections to Newburyport miniaturist Laura Coombs Hills \nFriday\, September 12\, 2025 • 6:30 p.m.Newburyport Art Association\, Newburyport\, MA \nJoin author and historian Kathleen Langone for a richly illustrated lecture on the life and work of Amalia Kussner\, one of the most celebrated miniaturists of the Gilded Age—and discover her surprising connections to Newburyport’s own renowned portrait miniaturist\, Laura Coombs Hills. \nIn the late 19th century\, no female portrait artist matched Amalia Kussner’s prestige or clientele. At a time when photography was ascendant\, Kussner’s hand-painted miniatures delivered warmth\, elegance\, and a soulful presence that cameras could not. Her sitters included Caroline Astor\, Consuelo Vanderbilt\, Mamie Fish\, Minnie Paget\, Edward VII\, Czar Nicholas II and Alexandra\, and Cecil Rhodes—rendered in luxurious detail and often in daringly modern\, off-the-shoulder poses. \nFrom the mid-1890s to the early 1910s\, owning a Kussner miniature signaled status on par with fine jewelry or a Newport mansion. Commanding commissions comparable to leading male artists\, Kussner stands among the “first wave” of prominent women artists—yet her rise also included lawsuits\, scandals\, and sudden turns\, including a surprise marriage to Charles du Pont Coudert. \nDrawing from her book The Miniature Painter Revealed\, Langone presents 70 images\, including color reproductions of Kussner’s rare surviving works\, and explores how the careers of Kussner and Laura Coombs Hills intersected within the elite world of Gilded Age portraiture—offering a local lens for Newburyport audiences.
