DESCRIPTION:On September 19\, 1775\, over 1\,100 men departed Newburyport on a secret mission to capture Quebec—led by Benedict Arnold and planned with George Washington. \nJoin Jack Santos as he recounts the stories of Newburyport’s patriots on this daring expedition through the wilderness as we celebrate its 250th anniversary. \n250 years ago this year\, on the 19th of September\, 1775\, 1100 farmers\, soldiers\, merchants\, teachers\, and laborers left Newburyport on eleven ships for a secret\, bold attack on Quebec City. \nHad the plan worked\, there likely would have been no revolutionary war\, and Quebec would have been the 14th state in a new United States of America. \nRelatively recently\, Jack Santos put his hiking boots on his feet\, and his kayak on his car\, to follow Arnold’s trail through Maine. He followed the diary\, maps\, and stories of Newburyport soldiers. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThe Historic Dogtown walking tour is almost three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. The terrain is up and down throughout\, over gentle hills. Hiking attire and closed footwear advised; walking poles are useful. DESCRIPTION:Most New Englanders are very familiar with the outbreak of the witch craze in 17th century Salem\, Massachusetts depicted in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible\, but many have never heard of the Burning Times\, a period of roughly 150 years in Europe during which tens of thousands of victims\, mostly women and girls\, were tortured and executed for the imaginary crime of witchcraft. \nMarblehead Little Theatre and UUCGL invite you to join scholar and minister Victoria Weinstein for a lecture and conversation about the religious\, political and social context and outcomes of this terrible chapter in history. Part of the troops encamped in the Town of Danvers on the night of September 14\, 1775 on their way to Newburyport where they embarked for the Kennebec and their famous march through the pathless wilds of Maine successfully accomplished in spite of formidable obstacles and excessive privations. Native Americans\, specifically the Abenaki\, played a role as scouts and guides\, and there was also hope for broader support from the Canadian Indigenous populations. \nIn September 1775\, early in the American Revolutionary War\, Colonel Benedict Arnold led a force of 1\,100 Continental Army troops on an expedition from Cambridge in the Province of Massachusetts Bay to the gates of Quebec City.

At a time when photography was ascendant\, Kussner’s hand-painted miniatures delivered warmth\, elegance\, and a soulful presence that cameras could not. Her sitters included Caroline Astor\, Consuelo Vanderbilt\, Mamie Fish\, Minnie Paget\, Edward VII\, Czar Nicholas II and Alexandra\, and Cecil Rhodes—rendered in luxurious detail and often in daringly modern\, off-the-shoulder poses. \nFrom the mid-1890s to the early 1910s\, owning a Kussner miniature signaled status on par with fine jewelry or a Newport mansion. DESCRIPTION:September 3\nProgram:\n5:30 – 6:00 pm: Light Refreshments & Networking\n6:00 – 7:00 pm: Presentation\n7:00- 7:15 pm: Conclusion & Q&A.\nhttps://bit.ly/MaximustoJack \nOn the night of September 3rd\, 1960\, John Hays Hammond Jr. hosted a reading by the poetCharles Olson at Hammond Castle Museum… \nThis poster was originally done for that event\, by the inventor’s late-life partner Harry Martin\, who introduced Hammond—once called the “Electronic Sorcerer”—to Olson: the self-styled “Archeologist of Morning.” The two men’s friendship would be short-lived and tempestuous. \n65 years later\, join Hammond Castle Museum in marking the anniversary of Olson’s reading and for the first time exploring the dramatic relationship between our founder and the luminary Maximus poet—two colossal figures who helped shape the community of Gloucester as we\nknow it today. \nThrough never-before-seen archival correspondence and a close reading of often overlooked Olson poems that address Hammond and the avant-garde 1960s literary and artistic circle surrounding the Museum directly\, Director of Visitor Services and Education Caleb McMurphy\nwill revive a near-forgotten chapter of local history and shed new light on two of the city’s most\ninteresting citizens.

Held over one weekend each fall\, the Salem Literary Festival hosts readings\, writing workshops\, panel discussions\, and artistic expression in music\, theater\, dance\, etc. \nLit Fest primarily features local and regional authors of recently published work\, some of whom have an international audience. The house exhibits a certain elegance and refinement while providing for basic needs of its early owners. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, August 28\, 2025\n10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.\nCarlson Education Center\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA\nCAM Members Free\, Non-Members $5\nRegistration required as space is limited \nUp to the early 20th century\, schooners were the workhorses of the Gloucester fisheries under sail. But visitors to the Cape Ann Museum have often asked\, “What exactly is a Schooner?” This presentation will provide an easy-to-remember definition of a schooner and will show its evolution from a small inshore fishing boat to an extreme racing type. Ship models from the Museum’s collection and photos will illustrate the presentation. \nYou are invited to join us every Thursday for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Education Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed.
