SUMMARY:Benedict Arnold in Danvers
DESCRIPTION:Arnold was still on the Patriots’ side of the Revolution\, he and his troops camped in Danvers? \nOne of the most strategic and daring exploits of the patriot cause during the revolution. Part of the troops encamped in the Town of Danvers on the night of September 14\, 1775 on their way to Newburyport where they embarked for the Kennebec and their famous march through the pathless wilds of Maine successfully accomplished in spite of formidable obstacles and excessive privations. Native Americans\, specifically the Abenaki\, played a role as scouts and guides\, and there was also hope for broader support from the Canadian Indigenous populations. \nIn September 1775\, early in the American Revolutionary War\, Colonel Benedict Arnold led a force of 1\,100 Continental Army troops on an expedition from Cambridge in the Province of Massachusetts Bay to the gates of Quebec City.

DESCRIPTION:The Miniature Painter Revealed: Amalia Kussner’s Gilded Age Pursuit of Fame and Fortune \nA Talk by Kathleen Langone — with connections to Newburyport miniaturist Laura Coombs Hills \nFriday\, September 12\, 2025 • 6:30 p.m.Newburyport Art Association\, Newburyport\, MA \nJoin author and historian Kathleen Langone for a richly illustrated lecture on the life and work of Amalia Kussner\, one of the most celebrated miniaturists of the Gilded Age—and discover her surprising connections to Newburyport’s own renowned portrait miniaturist\, Laura Coombs Hills. \nIn the late 19th century\, no female portrait artist matched Amalia Kussner’s prestige or clientele. At a time when photography was ascendant\, Kussner’s hand-painted miniatures delivered warmth\, elegance\, and a soulful presence that cameras could not. Her sitters included Caroline Astor\, Consuelo Vanderbilt\, Mamie Fish\, Minnie Paget\, Edward VII\, Czar Nicholas II and Alexandra\, and Cecil Rhodes—rendered in luxurious detail and often in daringly modern\, off-the-shoulder poses. \nFrom the mid-1890s to the early 1910s\, owning a Kussner miniature signaled status on par with fine jewelry or a Newport mansion. Commanding commissions comparable to leading male artists\, Kussner stands among the “first wave” of prominent women artists—yet her rise also included lawsuits\, scandals\, and sudden turns\, including a surprise marriage to Charles du Pont Coudert. \nDrawing from her book The Miniature Painter Revealed\, Langone presents 70 images\, including color reproductions of Kussner’s rare surviving works\, and explores how the careers of Kussner and Laura Coombs Hills intersected within the elite world of Gilded Age portraiture—offering a local lens for Newburyport audiences.

But visitors to the Cape Ann Museum have often asked\, “What exactly is a Schooner?” This presentation will provide an easy-to-remember definition of a schooner and will show its evolution from a small inshore fishing boat to an extreme racing type. Ship models from the Museum’s collection and photos will illustrate the presentation. \nYou are invited to join us every Thursday for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Education Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. Ship models from the Museum’s collection and photos will illustrate the presentation. \nYou are invited to join us every Thursday for a unique experience. DESCRIPTION:Did you know there was a shot fired in Danvers\, MA during August of 1774? \nGeneral Gage’s “87 Days at Danvers” June 2 – August 27\, 1774 \nA presentation and discussion of what should be viewed as the First Campaign of the American Revolutionary War. And\, contrary to popular thought\, within that ‘juggernaut’ perhaps the ‘First’ shot fired in that War possibly occurring in Danvers Massachusetts on August 24\, 1774. \nUnbelievably what occurred during those crucial 87 days has been vastly ignored and dismissed by virtually every history professional. What few who mentioned that period touched upon it lightly – noting nothing worthy of mention. Some describing Governor-General Gage’s time on the North Shore as a geopolitical campaign\, inferring that it was more of a summer vacation – it was not. \nThis talk is to review the mosaic of known facts significantly pertinent to the American Revolutionary War which occurred during those 87 days and put into perspective the overt acts of revolt which both preceded and followed that time.

DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, August 17\, 2025\n10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nBabson Boulder Parking\nCherry Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930 \n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nOn Cape Ann\, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things — vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures\, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThe Historic Dogtown walking tour is almost three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. The terrain is up and down throughout\, over gentle hills. Hiking attire and closed footwear advised; walking poles are useful. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, August 14\, 2025\n10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.\nCarlson Education Center\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA\nCAM Members Free\, Non-Members $5\nRegistration required as space is limited \nDespite having no formal artistic training\, Childe Hassam (1859-1935) was a successful illustrator early in his life\, and soon became instrumental in developing Impressionism in the United States in the late 19th century. He spent some summers in Gloucester\, joining several major American painters in the region at the invitation of Frank Duveneck (1848-1919). Join us to learn about Hassam’s work\, the art colonies he participated in\, and his Impressionist view of Gloucester. \nYou are invited to join us every Thursday for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Education Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. The house exhibits a certain elegance and refinement while providing for basic needs of its early owners. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 8\, 2025\n10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nCape Ann Museum Courtyard\, Downtown Campus\n27 Pleasant St\, Gloucester\, MA\, 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nExplore the specific sites in the area of Gloucester known as Portuguese Hill depicted by renowned American realist painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967). Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions in the first decades of the 20th century. His paintings from this period capture the local landscape and architecture in a loosely rendered\, light-filled style and are considered by many to be some of his finest works. Also included are sites painted by Josephine Nivison Hopper (1883-1968)\, Hopper’s wife and artist in her own right\, whose work gained recognition long before her future husband’s success. Learn how this hillside neighborhood that the Hoppers travelled together inspired their artwork\, as well as the role the area plays in Gloucester history. \nIf you have enjoyed one of our Hopper’s Houses Downtown tours\, the Portuguese Hill tour takes you to another side of the city to see different views. It’s well worth the experience! \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours towards Portuguese Hill and back to downtown Gloucester.
