We will discuss some of the sculptor’s favorite influences found in Pauline Frances as well as its unique effect on his view of portrait sculpture. \nYou are invited to join us Thursdays for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Education Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. No special knowledge needed! DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 25\, 2025\n10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nCape Ann Museum Courtyard\, Downtown Campus\n27 Pleasant St\, Gloucester\, MA\, 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nAs a seaport town jutting into the Atlantic\, Gloucester was of strategic importance during the American Revolution and always under threat of attack. The people of the town stood ready to take action against the British\, and many of them did. In this walking tour down Middle Street — one of Gloucester’s oldest streets – we will step back in time to meet people who were witness to Revolution right from this spot; see where they lived and gathered\, in houses still standing today; and hear the stories of the roles they played in defending liberty\, as patriots\, privateers\, preachers and more. This tour was developed in conjunction with the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you walk Middle Street in downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, July 20\, 2025\n10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nBabson Boulder Parking\nCherry Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nOn Cape Ann\, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things — vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures\, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThe Historic Dogtown walking tour is almost three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. The terrain is up and down throughout\, over gentle hills. Hiking attire and closed footwear advised; walking poles are useful. Wharf Studio\, Gloucester reflects one such visit in 1958. Blaine was educated in representational\, realist\, and abstract methods of painting\, and was heavily influenced by the instruction of Abstract Expressionist Hans Hofmann (1880-1966). \nYou are invited to join us on Thursdays for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Education Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. The people of the town stood ready to take action against the British\, and many of them did. In this walking tour down Middle Street — one of Gloucester’s oldest streets – we will step back in time to meet people who were witness to Revolution right from this spot; see where they lived and gathered\, in houses still standing today; and hear the stories of the roles they played in defending liberty\, as patriots\, privateers\, preachers and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThis walking tour is three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. Hiking attire and footwear advised; also\, walking poles if you use them. Bring water and insect repellent. The tour will start at the main entrance to Dogtown\, off Cherry Street. Meet at the parking lot a short distance up Dogtown Road\, on the right. There is parking for a few cars in the lot; otherwise\, park along the right side of the road\, after the parking lot\, or along Cherry St. Please arrive 10 minutes early. SUMMARY:Trumpeters of Sedition: How the Printing Press created a Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Gary Gregory\, proprietor of the Printing Office of Edes & Gill\, will talk about the role of the printing press in the American Revolution. Printed pamphlets\, broadsides\, and newspapers energized the revolution\, and it was the printing press that produced the Declaration of Independence. Gary will use his replica of an English Common Press\, a wooden hand-press that now resides at the Museum of Printing\, to demonstrate the technology in use at the time of the American Revolution. \nThis event is funded in part by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) through the Massachusetts 250 Grant Program. This program supports the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution through programs that highlight historic themes of revolution and independence\, celebrate significant ‘firsts’ in Massachusetts and commemorate the state’s past 250 years.
