Special thanks to Martha Bower for the door wreaths and other decor. \nThis event is free to members of the Museum of Newbury and residents of “Old Newbury” (Newbury\, West Newbury\, Newburyport and Byfield) to thank the community for their support. $10 for general admission. DESCRIPTION:Cut flower gardens are all the rage these days! Join Stevens-Coolidge’s own horticulturist\, Kaela Robinson\, for a workshop class that will take you from planning and sowing\, to cutting and arranging from your very own cut flower garden. \nKaela will show you step-by-step how to create the perfect ‘Cut and come again’ cutting patch from start to finish\, covering everything from how to assess your site and choose your color palette to how to choose plants to balance flower and foliage and how to plan your ‘spring’ and ‘summer’ schemes. Participants will leave ready to build and nurture their own cutting garden and with some annual seed packets to get started. \nFrom her extensive research and experience designing the Stevens-Coolidge cutting gardens\, Kaela will share her favorite annuals\, biennials\, and perennials\, and will provide guidance on the key gardening tasks across the seasons\, offering technical tips and tricks for encouraging healthy plant development and bountiful growth. SUMMARY:Coastal Lecture: Awareness Inspires Conservation
DESCRIPTION:As our coastlines change\, the areas where sharks visit along the coast is changing. With all the shark-tivity in 2024\, the team at Crane Beach has been working with experts to learn more about these important top predators\, and what their presence means for the health of our coastlines. \nOne of the groups we’ve been collaborating with is the The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC)\, a nonprofit organization supporting scientific research\, educating the community\, and improving public safety. AWSC strives to increase knowledge of Atlantic white sharks to change public perception and conserve the species and ensure biologically diverse marine ecosystems. \nJoin us for a lecture with AWSC Community Engagement Manager Kristen Smith. To learn about ongoing white shark research projects being conducted and funded by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy\, how that research is impacting conservation and public safety efforts\, and up to date information on what that research has taught us. Audience members will have an opportunity to view videos and photographs during the research season and develop their knowledge of what a shark is and what it takes to conduct white shark research. \nAt the end of the program\, audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn how they can get involved in shark and ocean conservation. \nAbout our speaker: \nKristen Smith works as the Community Engagement Manager for the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC). Kristen attended Coastal Carolina University from where she received her degree in Marine Science and aided in her university’s shark research program. Kristen has been with the AWSC since 2016. In her role\, she coordinates and manages a variety of initiatives\, including educational programs\, community outreach efforts\, the college internship program\, and social media campaigns. Kristen has been featured on platforms such as the Today Show\, Channel 7 News Boston\, and Good Morning America. These appearances have highlighted AWSC’s white shark ecotourism program and public safety initiatives related to white sharks. \nThe Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) is a nonprofit organization supporting scientific research\, educating the community\, and improving public safety surrounding white sharks. This includes: \n-Little Sprout Kids Korner (Kids activities and craft station)\n-Storytime at 11 am and 2 pm\n-Little Sprouts in the Garden Education Cart\n-Self-Guided Historic House Tours (Available 10:30 am-4:30 pm)\n-Sensory-Friendly Nature Scavenger Hunt\n-Daily Garden Tours at Noon (approx. 30 minutes)\n-Food and Coffee Vendors\n-Yard Games in our Event Lawn\n-Bulb Information Station \nMother nature can be tricky\, so we appreciate your understanding that the bulbs bloom on their own timeline! Tripp Evans for an exploration of his latest book\, The Importance of Being Furnished: Four Bachelors at Home\, a portrait of four fascinating men who shaped American style from the Gilded to the Jazz Age yet whose lives have until now remained in shadow. \nPioneers in the fields of professional interior decoration and historic preservation\, they include Charles L. Pendleton (1846-1904)\, a reclusive gambler who built one of his era’s collections of eighteenth-century furniture; renowned interior decorator Ogden Codman\, Jr. (1863-1951)\, who inherited his ancestors’ vices along with their “Boston Brahmin” pedigree; writer Charles H. Gibson\, Jr. (1874-1954)\, who transformed his Back Bay home into a personal literary shrine and monument to his own beauty; and Henry Davis Sleeper (1878-1934)\, who created his Eastern Point masterpiece\, Beauport\, for the love of the man next door. The stories of these “surprisingly domestic bachelors” (as the press dubbed them) reveal the complicated depths beneath their homes’ brilliant surfaces\, as well as their connections to fellow bachelor-preservationists like Joseph Everett Chandler\, architect of Stevens-Coolidge House and Gardens.

Become a Butterfly Detective and help us solve the mysteries of the butterfly world at Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens! \nIn this fun\, hands-on outdoor nature program\, kids will: \n-Read a butterfly-themed story\n-Search for butterflies and caterpillars in their natural habitat\n-Discover what butterflies eat and how they grow\n-Participate in a butterfly themed activity or craft \nKids will use real tools like magnifying glasses\, field guides\, and observation cards as they explore\, observe\, and learn about the magical life of butterflies. A perfect mix of science\, art\, and outdoor adventure! \nHeld at Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens on Tuesday mornings\, join one or all of the sessions and explore the hidden worlds beneath our feet and above our heads.\nRecommended for ages 2-5. Dress for the weather! \nRecommended for children ages 4-10. An adult must attend and register for this program but there is no additional charge. Limit to 2 adults per child.
